PEM ELECTROLYSIS SYSTEMS AND STACKS FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY STORAGE AND SECTOR COUPLING H-TEC Systems GmbH Dr. Frank Allebrod Head of R&D
H-TEC SYSTEMS GMBH H-TEC SYSTEMS o Since 1997 H-TEC has been involved in innovative solutions in the field of hydrogen o 2010 GP JOULE integrated H-TEC SYSTEMS as a subsidiary within the company o Two offices in Germany: Buttenwiesen and Lübeck OUR GOAL o The H-TEC SYSTEMS goal is the most inexpensive conversion of electricity into hydrogen using PEM electrolysers PAGE 2
REUSSENKÖGE LÜBECK o Founded: 2009 o Employees: 200 o Installed Capacity: More than 600 MW o Segments: Products & Services Projects Think CONNECT o The Mission: 100 % Renewable energy - Production, Conversion, Distribution & Use GEISLINGEN AN DER STEIGE TORONTO LOS GATOS BERLIN BUTTENWIESEN PAGE 3
HYDROGEN IS NOW. PAGE 4
POWER GAP FILLER Goal: renewable energy around the clock Solution: the Power Gap Filler Combination of biogas and electrolysis Surplus energy is stored through electrolysis The hydrogen is combusted in the biogas CHP during peak times PAGE 5
POWER GAP FILLER PAGE 6
VERBUNDPROJEKT (JOINT PROJECT) o The concept: linked with regional hydrogen o Production (5 200 kw electrolysis systems) o Transportation (1 tank truck) o Processing (2 hydrogen filling stations) o Marketing (2 public transport buses) o Excess RES power is put to good use in emissions-free mobility o A model for the smart integration of decentralised hydrogen infrastructure o Increase in acceptance through local use of regionally produced power PAGE 7
PROOF OF REDUCTION IN CO 2 EMISSIONS Climate protection every day o An annual CO2 saving of 322 tonnes per bus (308 km daily route) o For all five electrolysers the waste heat used saves between 350 and 800 tonnes of CO2 annually depending on the type of heating (natural gas, oil, coal) o Since the electrolysers are only used to a capacity of 24,000 operating hours in the period under review, the saved CO2 emissions can be increased even more by further individual or public transport users PAGE 8
INDUSTRIAL POLICY SIGNIFICANCE The promotion of domestic technologies in the market launch o The linking of various sectors is a key step to achieving national climate goals o PtG will play a decisive role in the transition to renewable energies o In GW of electrolysis output will be required o Schleswig Holstein (North Germany) has the opportunity to become the core area of hydrogen production in Germany o PEM electrolysis has the greatest cost-reduction potential for the production of hydrogen from renewable energies PAGE 9
H-TEC Series S o Available now! o Compact design o Dimensions (S30/50): 279 x 107 x 110 mm o High power density o Nominal load S30/10, S30/30, S30/50: 1 kw, 3 kw, 5 kw o MTTF: h o > h (cumulated) tests without failure o No significant degradation at nominal operation conditions PAGE 10
