ENGIE s Transition: A view on Decarbonisation, Digitalisation and Decentralisation Paulo Torres Centralised Generation Metier ENGIE
Decarbonisation.1/4 No new coal fired generation and a gradual exit from coal Exited Coal fired generation in USA, UK, Indonesia and India Shutdown 1600MW Hazelwood Coal Power Station, Australia However, will complete Coal Fired Projects under construction in Morocco, Brazil and Chile Gas Fired generation is the bridge and an important part of low carbon generation Over the long term the world will gradually move from low carbon to zero carbon generation
Decarbonisation 2/4 Emphasis on electricity generation from Renewable Energy Sources Onshore wind: Keep strengthening the existing portfolio. ENGIE currently has over 4.5GW of onshore wind capacity Solar: A substantial increase in Solar PV from around 0.2GW in late 2015 to around 2GW in operation or under construction. 100MW of Solar CSP in RSA in advanced construction Offshore Wind: Close to 2.1GW capacity awarded including 25MW with Floating technology. Other developments being pursued Hydro: Over 16GW of capacity a majority of which is operational
Decarbonisation 3/4 Biomass: Over 50 sites across Europe, US and Brazil consuming 2 million tons/year of biomass Geothermal: Around 100MW under construction. Some other developments being explored Marine Geothermal: the Thassalia project in Marseille for sustainable heating, hot water and air conditioning for around 500,000m2 of space. Hydrogen: A prospective green technology In the long term: Potential to move from Natural Gas to Green Gas
Decarbonisation 4/4 ENGIE and Energy Storage e.g. Pumped Storage in the UK and Germany; Li-Ion BESS solutions in France, Germany, Belgium, Chile and US; Flywheels in France; and production of hydrogen BESS with other technologies being implemented in Brazil and France VPPs in the US Dispatchable RES: an area of strong interest both at centralised and Decentralised scales Green mobility and EVs: integration in the electrical network Hot and Chilled Water part of energy storage Development of integrated RES solutions with different types of storage for a 100% renewable mix
Digitalisation 1/2 Use of Big Data analytics to rationalise and optimise operations of Gas Fired and Renewable Generation fleets e.g. Operational Performance, Maintenance activities, Regulatory Compliance, asset/portfolio optimisation Standardisation of platforms to the extent commercially feasible and practical High quality relevant data to improve competitiveness and develop new applications Digital applications to improve efficiency of the assets and that for the customers
Digitalisation 2/2 Digitalisation to achieve practical results (improve efficiency, enhance customer experience, improve competitiveness etc.) rather than for the sake of it Digital solutions for improving customer service and providing efficient services in the B2B and B2C space. Rationalisation of platforms across the globe Bundling of services to provide flexible solutions for customers with a Customer First emphasis and give the customer control Focus on Services a wide range of services already exist within the ENGIE portfolio Training and reorientation of staff
Decentralisation 1/2 Decentralisation - Both organisationally and growth potential for the energy infrastructure Development around Renewables Increasing importance for energy storage as generation shifts to the distribution level. Visibility of generation sources at Distribution level to TSOs another lever for decentralisation and digitalisation Offgrid Solar & Wind e.g. Solar PV around Telecom towers with local Microgrids Home Solar PV and Storage A wide suite of services for a territory e.g. Ohio State University
Decentralisation 2/2 Virtual Power Plants for providing services to TSOs/DSOs by aggregation of capacities Storage solutions for Load smoothing, Demand Charge Managements, Ancillary Services VPPs can aggregate storage from batteries, hot water, chilled water, hydrogen etc. Power to Gas (Hydrogen, synthetic methane) among a number of technologies developed and perfected by ENGIE, to offer an effective solution for the future.
