The Historic Houses Trust is one of a number of agencies administered through the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), reporting to the Minister for Heritage. OEH regulates industry, protects and conserves the NSW environment, manages over 850 national parks and reserves and protects the natural, cultural and built heritage in NSW. SLM provides custodial care for significant historic places, buildings, collections and landscapes with integrity, and enables people to enjoy and learn about them. SLM was established under the Historic Houses Act 1980 to manage, conserve and interpret the properties vested in it for the education and enjoyment of the public. SLM s portfolio includes houses, museums, landscapes, a library and collections of paintings, furniture and objects. SLM is managed through four Divisions Heritage & Collections, Curatorial & Public Engagement, Commercial & Marketing Services and Operations & Governance. SLM cares for 12 of the State's most important historic houses, museums and their collections: Elizabeth Bay House, Elizabeth Farm, Hyde Park Barracks Museum, Justice & Police Museum, Meroogal, Museum of Sydney, Rose Seidler House, Rouse Hill House & Farm, Susannah Place Museum, Vaucluse House, The Mint complex and the Caroline Simpson Library and Research Collection. All are listed in the NSW State Heritage Register. The Museum of Sydney and the Hyde Park Barracks are on the National Heritage list, with Hyde Park Barracks also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. SLM s portfolio assets are valued at more than $245 million including buildings, land and museum collections. It also maintains 38 hectares of land including public spaces, farmland and gardens, as well as infrastructure such as roads, farm dams, 8 kilometres of fences and gates. The agency collects, catalogues and conserves material relating to core themes of domestic material culture, the history of art, architecture and design, and aspects of Sydney s social history related to its sites. The collections held at museums are valued at more than $30 million and comprise 250,000 archaeological artefacts, more than 47,500 objects, more than 130,000 glass-plate negatives, a library collection and a growing digital collection all of cultural significance to the history of NSW. The Heritage & Collections Division brings together a team of professionally and technically specialised capabilities which focuses on the conservation, preservation and presentation of the organisation s 1

2 collections, sites, buildings and gardens. The activities of the Heritage & Collections Division include conservation management planning, collections and access, conservation, capital works and maintenance, endangered houses projects, and landscaping. Primary purpose of the role Assist with the implementation and delivery of a range of minor capital works projects to achieve objectives identified in Sydney Living Museums corporate plan that meet statutory obligations under the Historic Houses Act 1980 and other relevant heritage legislation. Key accountabilities Support the development and delivery of minor capital works project involving several disciplines to meet the agency s objectives and legislation requirements. Provide project and operational support, including monitoring and reporting on minor capital works project plans, milestones and deliverables, to ensure time, cost and quality indicators are in line with approved project plans. Update and collate documentation and records regarding relevant issues, policies and practices to ensure the delivery of projects complies with agreed project management methodology. Undertake basic research and analysis in assigned project areas and contribute to the preparation of project briefs to support informed decision making and planning. Assist the project team in completing tasks and implementing the project plans to ensure agreed outcomes are achieved. Recognise and be sensitive to the particular and often complex conservation needs of the agency s different sites when planning capital works projects to prevent damage from occurring. Participate in heritage related public programming events and use web and social media technology to communicate minor capital works projects and Sydney Living Museums to audiences to promote and gain support for the agency. Maintain an understanding of Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S) and risk management policies and procedures to accurately apply them to the planning and delivery of all projects. Key challenges Assisting in the effective delivery of concurrent minor capital works project across the agency to ensure projects are completed within budget and on time while meeting agreed standards and project milestones. Utilising and implementing project management methodologies and processes throughout projects in line with best practice policies to specify and monitor performance goals. Developing and coordinating relationships across Teams, Portfolios and externally to deliver planned outcomes and overcome communication, resourcing and practical challenges that arise from an agency dispersed over a number of sites. Direct reports Nil Budget/Expenditure Nil Essential requirements Relevant qualifications and experience in the delivery of construction, conservation or interpretation projects in a multi-disciplinary cultural, museum or heritage environment. 4 Experience in the delivery of minor capital works in relation to historic buildings and sites. Experience in preparing technical and other project documentation including conservation studies, business plans, reports and professional correspondence. Ability to work within the boundaries of the Historic House Trust Act 1980 and the NSW State Plan. Knowledge of current heritage conservation principles and practices in Australia, and knowledge of key legislation including the NSW Heritage Act 1977 and the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 and the Historic Houses Act Experience in managing project budgets and scheduling works, staff resources and budgets, including developing and delivering project plans. Working knowledge of the main software applications used to develop projects, maintain and update information relating to project development and tracking. Excellent project management and organisation skills with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills. A current NSW driver s licence.
