4 Three routes into PwC Deferred Entry route Want to spend two years teaching on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme before working for PwC? Then apply to Teach First and PwC at the same time, but defer your entry to PwC. Not only will schools and pupils benefit from your enthusiasm and expertise, you ll also develop a host of skills with Teach First that you can bring to the business world from leadership and communication, to planning and problem-solving. Leadership Programme If you re a Teach First participant (in your second year of teaching) or a Teach First ambassador (someone who s successfully completed the two-year programme), you can apply for a graduate role with us via the PwC Leadership Programme. Summer Internship * The Teach First Summer Internship is a three-week paid placement with PwC. It s a great way to get practical work experience that could lead to a job offer. You ll spend three weeks in one of our business areas, learning about our work and organisation, as well as getting to grips with live project work and developing key skills. Perform well and we ll offer you a graduate job in one of our business areas. *Teach First refer to this as a Summer Project.

There s also a very active Teach First alumni group at PwC made up of over 100 ambassadors who work with various schools and charities, not just helping financially, but also offering skills and expertise developed with PwC. 6 Why Teach First? Teach First gives you a unique opportunity to transform the lives of young people. Spend two years teaching on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme and you ll make a real difference to pupils in schools in low income communities, helping to ensure that no child s educational success is limited by their socio-economic background. The programme combines working, training and qualifying as a teacher with leadership development training, coaching and mentoring, plus a range of networking and internship opportunities. At the end of the two years you can then join PwC and pursue a career in business. Your time on the programme will have equipped you with the skills you need to excel in a career with us and prepare you for anything you may face. In fact, the skills you develop with Teach First are highly transferable from the classroom, to positions of influence outside it. 7 About Teach First The link between low family income and low educational attainment is greater in the UK than in almost any other developed country. Teach First believes this can change. An independent charity and an increasingly powerful movement for social change, Teach First works to drive up educational standards and raise aspirations in schools in low income communities. Teach First s two-year Leadership Development Programme harnesses the enthusiasm and drive of outstanding graduates and experienced professionals. It provides you with the skills, experience and opportunities needed to become inspiring teachers and leaders in the classroom and beyond. There are huge benefits all round. Teach First and its partner schools gain the enthusiasm and expertise of exceptionally skilled graduates. You develop many of the skills you need to become a future leader, whether that be in education, or a business like PwC. More than 1m pupils living in low income communities across England and Wales have been taught by a Teach First teacher. Since 2002, Teach First have recruited, placed and trained over 10,000 graduates in schools across England and Wales. Teach First s partnership with PwC has enabled us to tackle educational inequality more effectively. The crucial financial support given by our Platinum Partnership has enabled us to recruit, train and support thousands of new teachers. PwC now employ over 100 Teach First ambassadors; I m proud of their contribution towards our vision, through volunteering and initiatives to support young people in our partner schools. Meet our people Teach First was a great way to discover whether I d enjoy teaching. Working with incredible children and seeing the impact I could have on their education was fantastic and exhausting.

8 Meet our people Teach First was a great way to discover whether I d enjoy teaching. Working with incredible children and seeing the impact I could have on their education was fantastic and exhausting. I hadn t envisaged how tiring constantly coming up with creative ways to engage 30 students with a subject would be. I learnt a huge amount though like how to think on my feet and organise my time, which is invaluable when you have to juggle work and study. I also developed life skills, such as the ability to review my performance and reflect on the improvements I could make. Deciding to leave teaching was hard, but I wanted to explore different career paths. After my Summer Internship with PwC, I accepted a graduate offer with them. Initially I worked in Private Client Tax, giving tax planning and compliance advice to senior executives. More recently I have moved to the Tax, People and Culture team, which delivers our people priorities and culture agenda to support the overall tax vision. While the work provides different challenges from teaching, I still find I draw on the skills I learnt through Teach First every day. 9 Giving back by teaching in a challenging school in a deprived area seemed a great way to spend two years after university. The best part was the students. They give you a different perspective on the world and they re a good laugh. I also enjoyed the responsibility your classroom is your kingdom. And the creativity teaching demands definitely gave me an edge when I entered business. I knew Teach First would generate a lot of opportunities beyond teaching. And as I didn t see myself in a classroom all my life, I completed an internship with PwC to experience the corporate world. I m now part of a team that makes sure the figures a company reports are correct. Like teaching, the work is very people-oriented. So the fact that Teach First has heightened my ability to read people, collaborate and speak confidently to groups has been a big plus. I enjoy working with ambitious, driven colleagues and advising clients but I also like the fact I can still give back to local schools thanks to PwC s volunteer programme. 10 Meet our people Lots of people told me Teach First was an amazing experience and they were right. It s developed my sense of integrity and empathy, as well as my organisational skills and my confidence. Building the trust of students, seeing them come to school, creating a stable environment for someone who doesn t have that at home it all makes the hard work worthwhile. Although I opted for Teach First, I ve always been interested in the private sector and its role in the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility. PwC stood out for me as it s a top Teach First sponsor and heavily involved in community work something I ve taken every opportunity to get involved in since joining. We ve even started a Teach First network at PwC so we can carry on tackling educational inequality from a business perspective. So far, my PwC career has seen me work with a wide range of clients to make sure their performance assurance is fair and accurate. Along the way, I ve enjoyed building relationships, learning about new industries, and collaborating with experts. 11 Before I joined PwC I spent three years on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme which really prepared me for the work I do now as a Consultant. There s nothing quite as challenging as trying to teach a class of rowdy teenagers, so I learnt to be resilient and deal with whatever was thrown at me. Working at PwC is also very challenging in terms of the level of work and responsibility you re given, but that s what I love about it. It s an incredibly friendly place to work where they really look after their people and offer a huge breadth of opportunity. And I still have the chance to use my teaching background as I work on a number of bids in the education space. You ll join a structured graduate programme, which will give you the training and development you need to shine and make a difference to your clients. Here s a snapshot of some of the areas you could work in. Deals Actuarial Join Actuarial and you ll use probability to help clients analyse how future events could affect them. You might be looking at managing the risks a company faces with their pension scheme, the amount of money an insurance company should hold to cover the claims they incur, or even the likelihood of a business being hit by an earthquake. Legal We help put together major mergers and acquisitions and resolve businessrelated issues. We focus on the deals and crisis elements of a business; from strategic procurement advice, to insolvency of failing businesses, from international take-over bids to economic crime investigations and disputes. The variety on offer is incredible and you ll have the opportunity to gain a huge breadth of professional experience and skills. With more than 2,500 lawyers in over 85 countries, we have one of the most extensive legal service networks in the world. What s more, we re able to offer our clients thorough solutions, incorporating multidisciplinary advice from other business areas. From offering immigration advice to multinational companies who are moving employees internationally, to providing support on a range of business critical issues such as data protection, privacy and security.

15 ...support the Teach First vision We currently have 25 people volunteering as Teach First coaches to help support Teach First participants throughout their time on the Leadership Development Programme. That might mean listening to an idea, meeting to work through a complex issue or just being at the end of the phone after a long day at school. deliver fresh initiatives The PwC Classroom is an initiative that inspires talented students in challenging social environments to aim high. Launched in July 2014 and delivered by PwC Recruitment and our Teach First alumni in London and the Midlands, it helps young people understand what opportunities are out there and make informed career choices. Attending the PwC Classroom could lead to work experience opportunities and ultimately a career with us. and grow in a world-leading professional services organisation As we have more than 195,000 people across 157 countries, you ll be able to build relationships that will be invaluable to your future. Many of our Teach First alumni have taken the opportunity to work for us abroad in locations across Australia, South Africa, Dubai and Bratislava. We operate in 157 countries PwC is committed to tackling social exclusion and alleviating unemployment in the UK, so we ve regenerated a disused fire station, transforming it into a community hub called the Brigade. It offers apprentices the opportunity to attend workshops and gain work experience in the busy live kitchen. Up to 28 people each year go on to do full apprenticeships at the restaurant. PwC s volunteer mentors work with the apprentices one-to-one, helping to build their confidence, improve their skills in things like money management and CV writing, and prepare for work..pwc.com/uk/careers 13

16 Application and selection For the Deferred Entry route, you ll need to apply directly to Teach First and PwC simultaneously. You must get an offer from each organisation. With the PwC Leadership Programme or our Summer Internship*, you ll have applied to Teach First before PwC. With these two routes, you ll skip the first interview stage of our selection process, and won t need to complete the written and group exercises at our assessment day. You ll need a 2:1 degree in any subject and although we no longer use UCAS tariffs for the majority of our graduate roles (including Assurance, Deals, Tax and Technology), for the following areas, you ll need a UCAS tariff of at least: 320* for Actuarial 340* for Strategy Consulting 340* for Economics Consulting (*or equivalent and excluding General Studies from your top three A-levels). What Teach First looks for Teach First looks for proven leaders and strong communicators who have the resources, resilience and self-awareness to be at their best in challenging situations.
