Summary - The officer supports the Department of Public Safety s (DPS) mission to provide students, employees, and guests of the university with a safe and secure environment in which to study, work and enjoy programs offered by the university. The position of Public Safety Officer requires flexibility in scheduling. The Public Safety Officers are assigned a standard work schedule. This schedule may be altered to meet the needs of the department. Alterations may be made to accommodate special University events, emergencies, and/or staff member sick leave, vacation, holiday leave, and emergency leave. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - These duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Provides general support, and emergency response services. 2. Completion of daily shift log reports. 3. Remains in constant contact with others via cellular telephone and/or radio. 4. Issuance of university parking violation warnings and citations. 5. Provides routine patron escort and general customer services. 6. Guards University and personal property against damage, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. Qualifications - High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Routine patrols of buildings and grounds of the university on foot or in patrol vehicles. b. Examines doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure. c. Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and reports to local law enforcement agencies persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts. d. Inspects equipment and machinery to determine if tampering has occurred. e. Watches for and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes or other building safety hazards, and security doors left unlocked.
4 f. Observes individuals to guard against theft of university property. g. Sounds alarm or calls police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or illegal activities. h. Allows authorized persons to enter property. i. Records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning machinery or equipment, for use of supervisory staff. 5 Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Language Skills - Ability to effectively read, write and comprehend English. Ability to read simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of and be able to use Microsoft Outlook software, Microsoft Word, and commonly used Internet browsers.
