1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Systems and Network Administrator (Fixed term of 1 year) Department: Reporting to: Directly Supervising: Salary Range: Information Technology Services Director of ITS Occasionally assisting new contractors Band 4 FTE $78,464 plus 10% superannuation plus 17.5% leave loading Contact: Mr Greg Chenhall, Director, ITS Date: January 2018 POSITION SUMMARY The Systems and Network Administrator position is a key member of the information technology team providing broad systems administration and communications networking expertise during a period of significant College ICT Transformation. The role provides advice to the Director, ITS and other Information Technology Services team members. As a Systems and Network Administrator the person is responsible for the operations, continual improvement and security of on premises Linux and Windows systems and developing IaaS and PaaS ICT infrastructure. The position plays a role to improve ITIL change, incident and problem management processes and proposes improvement to existing configuration management systems.
2 SELECTION CRITERIA Essential: 1. An appropriate tertiary degree or IT certification in Information Technology and extensive relevant systems administration experience within ITIL environments. 2. Demonstrated experience with the management of Linux and Windows hosts via IaaS or PaaS as well as standalone and virtualized servers and related ICT infrastructure including storage systems, identity and access management solutions and network routers and switches. Vendor engagement experience. 3. Demonstrated experience with the application of IT security measures. 4. Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills, including an enthusiasm for the work, and a willingness to learn and teach others face-to-face as well as through excellent documentation. 5. A high level of written and spoken communication skills, and previous technical procedure writing and presentation experience, as well as the review of general ICT change plans and procedures that are developed by others. 6. A capacity for self-motivation, to work effectively and to contribute to the organisational development of the College as a whole and a passion for and awareness of future directions in information technology. 7. Demonstrated ability to prioritise competing tasks, meet deadlines and work under pressure as well as contribute and work within a team and independently. 8. A well-developed sense of discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality, particularly in regards to the access confidential information. Desirable: 1. ITIL certification(s). 2. Experience with systems availability, usage and trend reporting implementation. 3. Knowledge of CITRIX XenServer and CITRIX technologies. 4. A qualification in a project management methodology. Further Information: The successful applicant must secure, or be in the process of securing, a Working with Children approval. Applicants must be able to work flexibly outside standard hours to achieve maintenance and upgrades, and work remotely to assist on-call staff to restore failed services, rectify faults and address IT security events. Applicants shall be available for an on-call roster. Applicants will be required to bring originals or certified copies of academic and other qualifications if called for interview. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Operations of internal and external ICT infrastructure services and systems: Maintain, administer and report on computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations and associated documentation. 3 Ensure the creation and maintenance of up-to-date documentation of relevant policy, procedures, work practises and system configurations. Planning and policy: Develop better support and maintenance practices and strategies to maximise system availability for users while minimising support expenditure. Assist the development of technical and other procedures and policy. Develop project documentation including scope, requirements, designs and business cases relating to systems and ICT infrastructure. IT security: Plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures in order to protect data, software, and hardware. Manage IT security events and incident response across the ITS department and College. EXPERTISE, JUDGEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY Level of Supervision / Independence There is a high level of independence in managing the day-to-day issues that come in. The position works across the department and with clients and vendors in a range of ways (e.g. leading BAU tasks and managing back-end projects and technical developments). The position acts as a lead with the implementation of Infrastructure ITIL practices. The position is contactable out of hours and participates in on on-call roster (in agreement with oncall and call-back policies). The position proposes scheduled maintenance, change and disaster recovery testing that fits with defined outage periods. Problem Solving and Judgement The position is responsible for exercising judgement in the day-to-day prioritization of tasks, but discusses priorities on a weekly basis with the supervisor. The position helps ensure the delivery of ICT infrastructure services and takes remedial actions to ensure documentation is developed and maintained across the team. The incumbent is expected to ensure prompt reaction to support requests during assigned BAU periods, and remain vigilant for opportunities to prevent problems before they arise, including proactive alert management systems and processes. Professional and Organisational Knowledge The incumbent will have (or rapidly develop) knowledge and experience of how most of the College s IT systems interact. The incumbent is expected to develop procedures (as well as senior client communications) in relation to key issues. The incumbent needs to plan in detail, and report on BAU tasks requiring capital and other matters. The incumbent needs to be highly organized (working within the IT Infrastructure team) through the annual cycle of intakes and create clear processes for ITS staff to follow in relation to key BAU activities. Breadth of the position The incumbent reports formally directly to the Director, ITS and works across the ITS team for a range of functions. Page 3 of 5
