2 Current Trends A CAREER IN ACCOUNTING Government initiatives highlight the economy s increasing focus on the services sector and the need for innovation (an "ideas" boom). Recruiters are increasingly looking for applicants who demonstrate excellent soft skills including oral and written communication, emotional intelligence, ability to work in teams and the ability to innovate. Creativity and versatility are required in all business disciplines as technology drastically changes human activity old activities cease and new possibilities emerge. Globalisation means that domestic graduates and international applicants compete for employment. Consequently, competition is tough. Employers are using a variety of mechanisms to find staff. Faculty of Business and Economics 2
3 Skills required for a career in accounting RESILIENCE AND VERSATILITY The in-demand careers today may not even exist in the future as the pace of technological change disrupts a variety of industry sectors. Resilience, versatility and the ability to reflect are fundamental skills that graduates will need to survive in the future business world. Five fundamental shifts are causing major changes in the accounting professions: Technology - the rise of social, mobile, analytics/big data, cloud etc. Generational - significant differences between the generations. Workplace - work is no longer a place we go, but what we do; it's open, collaborative, and flexible. We work anywhere, anytime... Leadership - essential quality in the current business environment. Learning - rate of learning must be greater than the rate of change. Accounting graduates work in a multitude of sectors and no one career path will be the norm. Faculty of Business and Economics 3
