1 Celebratin f Diversity Tenure grup: 4 mnths Prerequisites Bk 1 and 2 Duratin: 2 days Objectives: Participants shuld be able t understand the cncept f diversity. Participants shuld be able t bserve the bene it f celebratin f diversity arund them. Participants shuld be able t get the best ut f the diversity at wrk. [Type text] Revised - September 25, 2015

2 Celebratin f Diversity: Define and Observe. Day 1 09:00am 09:30am 09:30am 10:00am 10:00am 11:00am 11:00am 11:15am 11:15am 12:15pm Intrductin and welcme: 30 Minutes (Buffer time can be used fr the icebreaker) Intrduce yurself and welcme the participants t the wrkshp. Share the bjectives and the agenda. De ine and bserve diversities. Ice breaker: 30 minutes. Request the participants t create a name tent. Prvide them with magazines with pictures, glue and sketch pens. These name tents shuld have everything except their names. They can have pictures and sayings that they can relate t. Pictures that depict their persnalities can be placed n these name cards. Give the participants hints withut in luencing their ideas. Let them imagine and create whatever they like. Reiterate the fact that n ne shuld mentin their names n the tents. Discuss/ Debrief: 1 hur. Once the participants have made their name tents, request them t submit them t yu. They can als paste them n the bard. Take ne card at a time and request the batch t igure ut whse card that culd be. Once the card wners have been recgnized, ask the audience if there were certain surprised that appeared. Questins that yu can ask are: What led t yur decisin? Whse descriptin was mst surprising? Why was it surprising? Lead the discussin twards hw we perceive urselves and hw thers perceive us. Break Wh am I? (Card n the frehead): 1 hur. Distribute an A4 size sheet t all the participants and request them t write a name r a grup n in. They shuld then lip it ver and pass it t the persn sitting next t them. The sheets culd have mvie stars, pliticians, a grup f peple, etc. Give ideas withut in luencing them. Then request them t lick the back f the paper in frnt f them and stick it n their freheads. Frm pairs and let the participants ind ut wh they are thrugh questins. Alternatively, the facilitatr shuld give a few names n pst- its and the participants shuld be requested t stick in n their frehead. Run the

3 activity ne participant at a time. At the end f the exercise, ask each trainee which f the hints were pure facts and which were pinins/ perceptins/ steretypes. Als discuss which nes helped in getting the crrect answer. 12:15pm 01:00pm 01:00pm 01:30pm 01:30pm 02:30pm The bjective is t get peple t use steretypes as hints. As the participants figure ut wh they are, they can take the sheet ff their freheads and wait fr the thers. Cultural Iceberg: 1 hur. The bjective is t sensitize participants t different cultures. Ask participants what cmes t mind when they think f the wrd American. Write the respnses n the bard. Keep the superficial respnses (Way they lk, way they dress, etc) at the tp and the mre underlying cncepts f culture (religin, plitics, family, etc) in the lwer segment. Draw an iceberg arund the respnses t shw what is visible and what is nt. Discuss and debate hw things can be different frm what they appear t be. Next, draw a similar iceberg. This time use the wrd Indian. Discuss hw icebergs meet at the bttm. We dn t have t mimic icebergs but we need t understand them. Intrduce steretypes and generalizatins. Steretypes and generalizatins: 1 hur. Discuss steretypes that were bserved thrughut the day. Discuss steretypes that were nt discussed during the curse f the day. This time can als be used t bring ut gender steretypes, scial steretypes, etc. Lunch This is why I am different: 1 hur Request everyne t talk abut ne thing that makes them different frm the thers. Ask them t add infrmatin abut why they think that is different abut them. Als ask fr stries where they have used that difference in a psitive way. The mre they think, the mre they will understand and tlerate. My circle. Clsing activity. Objective: T create a supprtive envirnment in which the learners can disclse their grup memberships and t allw them t experience what it is like t be part f a minrity grup. It is alright t be different. Have the learners frm a large circle. As yu call ut different grup names, the members are t g inside f each successive circle as they identify with the grup. Begin with "lw-risk" grups (e.g. brwn hair, large family, grup f prfessins yu are wrking with such as manager r prductin assciate) and wrk up t grups that are typically discriminated against r under represented (e.g. African American, Asian, female, gay, persn with disabilities). Applause as each grup frms in the middle As each grup f learners mve twards the center f the circle, ask them what they think is the mst psitive thing abut being a member f this grup. Hw did it feel t be in the center f the circle? (Were yu cmfrtable being stared at?) Hw did it feel t be n the utside f the circle? Hw did yu feel abut thse with yu in the center f the circle r abut thse in the uter circle? Did anyne nt make any trip int the circle? Hw did that feel? 05:00pm 06:00pm Recnstruct: 30 minutes. 5 Celebratin f Diversity: Celebrate. Day 2 09:00am 10:00am Seating plan: Mammals, reptiles and birds. Befre the participants step in fr the wrkshp, prepare the rm, clearly frming three grups. Mammals, reptiles and birds. Request participants t sit in the sectin that they relate t the mst. Mst ladies may pick birds. Avid influencing the chices the participants make. The bjective is t frm natural hmgeneus grups fr the next activity. Once the participants have taken their place, take a few views n why they selected the grup that they selected. Allw participants t swap grups if they want t during the curse f the discussin. Take reasns as well. 10:00am 10:30am Pwer hur Task 1: 20 minutes (Activity) 10 minutes (Debrief) Prvide three Sudku charts t each team and give them the time limit. If participants are nt aware f the game, take sme time t explain it t them. If ne f the participants is aware f the game, request him/ her t explain it t the grup. Make it a healthy cmpetitin and see hw the teams functin t achieve the task. Once the activity is ver, acknwledge the effrt and ask what challenges they faced during the task. 10:30am 11:00am Drive the discussin twards the imprtance f Diversity. Activity: 1 hur 30 minutes (Buffer time) Prvide each grup a large sheet f flip chart paper and markers. Have them draw a large flwer with a center and an equal number f petals t the number f learners in their grup. Thrugh discussin with their grup members, have them find their similarities and differences. They shuld fill in the center f the flwer with smething they all have in cmmn. Each member shuld then fill in his r her petal with smething abut them that is unique - unlike any ther member in their grup. Students shuld be instructed that they cannt use physical attributes such as hair clr, weight

6 etc. This encurages them t have mre meaningful discussins with their grup members. They shuld be encuraged t be creative in their ideas and drawings. After the small grup activity, have them share with the large grup, abut similarities and differences. 11:00am 11:15am 11:15am 11:45am The bjective is t be able t bserve diversity within hmgeneus grups as well. If yu bserve that the grups are nt diverse enugh, yu can als make sme swaps t ensure that there are diverse grups that are created after this exercise. Peple dn t need t change, they just need t lk at and celebrate the diversity within the grup. (This exercise shuld help facilitatrs understand each ther s abilities and knwledge base) Break Task 3: Cnnect the dts. 30 minutes. (Buffer time fr the next activity) Give them abut 5 minutes t wrk n the puzzle. At the end f the time perid, ask if anyne has fund the slutin. Discuss: Why is it that mst f us d nt think abut ging ut f the bundaries? We had t draw utside f the lines. This is what is required f us when we interact with thers as every thinks differently (utside f ur bundaries r "bx").

Discuss kinds f learners. Auditry, kinesthetic, visual and multimdal. Baggage activity as springbard int this discussin. Discuss cultural diversity. Religin, scietal hierarchies, values, family etc. 01:00pm 01:30pm 01:30pm 02:30pm 02:30pm 04:00pm Request participants t make a chart as a team that displays the kinds f learners and cultural diversity pst discussin. These are sme f the things yu are lking fr. What are the characteristics f a certain kind f learner and hw d yu figure that ut? What are the methds that yu will emply t teach/ train such a student? Hw he/ she is relevant as far as his/ her cntributin t the class is cncerned. Keep it as relevant t their jb as pssible. Real life experiences can be used as well. Hw can yu spt cultural diversities? What are the benefits f cultural diversities? Hw can different abilities be used psitively? Hw wuld yu keep the student interested in his wn grwth? While participants cme up with methds that they wuld emply t teach/ train the students, request them t think ut f the bx. Lunch Kinds f learners and cultural diversity (cntd) Request participants t present their charts t the rest f the grup. Each presentatin will be fllwed by a discussin. Debrief: Once the discussins are ver, discuss additinal methds t handle/ tackle different learners. When yu discuss kinds f learners and what they bring t the table, als discuss kinds f cultural backgrunds and knwledge base that can be psitively used. Task 4: Lights! Camera! Actin! (buffer time fr the actin plan) This activity will wrk as the pst assessment fr the entire wrkshp. It will test the understanding f the cncept, celebratin f diversity. Request each grup t cme up with a mvie using their mbile phnes and anything else that they might have. They can give the title t the mvie. The tpic will be Celebratin f diversity. Let the participants discuss and

(Share examples keeping in mind different kinds f culture and knwledge base that students bring t the wrkplace) Has there been a time when they verlked a pssible pprtunity as far as diversity is cncerned? What are the things that they are ging t take back frm this wrkshp? Hw is diversity relevant t their jb? Assist when and where required. Answer all questins that they might have. This will encurage innvative thinking and als frce them t use and display the new value that they have acquired. Break Screen the mvies that were created by the participants. Each screening will be fllwed by a discussin. Was the tpic dealt with in detail? Was smething missed ut? Did the mvie bring the message ut crrectly? Can the mvie be used t train thers n the cncept f Celebratin f Diversity? Hw was the available knwledge base f the grup used? (This is where we can revisit the imprtance f being able t link the entire wrkshp t what they d in their persnal and prfessinal spheres. I think a mvie is ging t be a really gd activity. It shuld wrk as their take away. Once they discuss and create it, they will cme acrss varius ideas and will be able t put things in perspective. We culd pssibly uplad the best ne n the website) Use the discussin t clse the sessin. Check fr understanding thrugh the discussin. Ensure t link the discussin t hw it is relevant t them at wrk and at hme. Actin plan: 45 minutes. Cntinue/ Stp/ Dubt. Request participants t make an actin plan fr themselves, based n everything that has been discussed. This will make it mre relevant fr them. Ensure that a few questins are answered. What d yu bring t the table? What can yu d fr the rganizatin/ students? What are a few things that yu will d in yur center after having gne thrugh the wrkshp? Once they have made their actin plans, request participants t share their actin plans with the larger audience. Clsing vide. (if time permits)
