2 WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? Every Apprenticeship is a real jb with training t develp industry level skills. It is recmmended that apprentices wrk fr a minimum f 30 hurs per week. An Apprenticeship can last between ne and six years depending n the level. Apprenticeships range in levels based n yur cmpetence and experience. Apprentices are nw able t achieve degree level qualificatins withut the debt assciated with traditinal Higher Educatin. Anyne aged 16 r ver can becme an apprentice. Even adults with a degree can nw retrain in a subject that is materially different frm their degree.
3 EARN WHILE YOU LEARN All Apprenticeships are linked t an hurly wage, meaning yu will have the pprtunity t learn the skills required t excel in industry whilst als being paid by yur emplyer. Havant & Suth Dwns Cllege encurage emplyers t pay cmpetitive rate, abve the Natinal Minimum f The average weekly wage is 180 a week. As an apprentice, yu will spend yur Apprenticeship wrking fr a business, cmpleting tasks and meeting bjectives set by yur emplyer. All Apprenticeships have 20% ff-the-jb training which means yu will be paid t train. The ther 80% yu will be immersing yurself in a real wrking envirnment, getting hands-n experience, supprt frm qualified clleagues and a fantastic learning pprtunity.
4 WHY BECOME AN APPRENTICE? Apprenticeships are designed t give yu the best f bth wrlds wrk and study. As an apprentice, yu ll earn while yu learn in a setting that reflects yur wider career aspiratins. Nt nly that, yu ll have the backing f yur wrk-based trainer wh will wrk with yu and yur emplyer t ensure yu re making satisfactry prgress. In fact, whatever level Apprenticeship yu wish t pursue Frm Level 2 t a Higher Apprenticeship. Yu can leave Cllege at university level withut the debt which is estimated t be 70,000! 5 ENTRY CRITERIA Althugh Apprenticeship prgrammes d nt have specific entry criteria, ur emplyers will stipulate the skills, persnal qualities and qualificatins required in rder t successfully carry ut daily tasks and duties whilst als studying an Apprenticeship alngside emplyment. Typically, emplyers will require that yu have at least three GCSEs grade 9 2 (ld grading system A*-E), specifically English and Maths. Intermediate Level 2 Applicants need t be ver 16 years ld and shw they have the ability t cmplete the prgramme. GCSE s grade 9 3 (ld grading system A*-D), including English and Maths are preferred, hwever, all applicants will be subject t initial assessments. Advanced Level 3 Applicants will typically be 18 years r ver and have previus experience which shws they have the ability t cmplete the prgramme. GCSE s grade 9-4, including English and Maths required. Higher Level 4 Entry requirements can include at least five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (new grading system A*-C), and Level 3 qualificatins, including A Levels, NVQ/SVQ Level 3, r a BTEC Natinal. Many Level 4 Apprenticeships will require yu t have industry specific experience t supprt achievement f this Higher Apprenticeship.
6 Degree Level 5 t 7 Entry requirements can include at least five GCSE at grade 9 4 (ld grading system A*-C), and Level 3 qualificatins, including A Levels, NVQ/SVQ Level 3, r a BTEC Natinal. T be cnsidered fr a degree level Apprenticeship, applicants must have relevant experience within this field. Emplyers use higher and degree level Apprenticeships t upskill their current staff. Intermediate and advanced Apprenticeships give yu the underpinning knwledge and experience required t prgress and achieve fundatin and degree qualificatins in industry. WHO PAYS? Yur emplyer pays any fees required t cver yur training csts. It is a fantastic pprtunity t prfessinally develp, earn an incme, gain vital wrk experience and give yurself a head start with yur career, but at n persnal cst! All yu need is a jb which matches the qualificatin yu want t study.
7 CELEBRATING SUCCESS CASE STUDIES Chle Hutchins, Business Administratin Level 3 Apprentice at Havant & Suth Dwns Cllege: When I left schl after my GCSEs I decided t take the Apprenticeship rute. When I started my Apprenticeship at HSDC I was wrking within the student finance supprt team, but I had the pprtunity t wrk with different departments within the Cllege. Once I started wrking in Business Supprt I fund that I really enjyed it and talking t apprentices was brilliant because I had experience with what they were ging thrugh. Fr peple cnsidering taking n an Apprenticeship I wuld say g fr it, it is a big cmmitment, but it can pen a lt f drs fr yu. An Apprenticeship has given me a successful start t my career. Rafael Cuesta, Design Level 3 Apprentice at Recense: My current rle cnsists f designing wrk fr clients t match their preferences and requests. The rle ranges frm creating lgs fr start-up businesses t billbards and leaflets fr advertisement. I had always wanted t stick t art and design fr a career and there are curses where I can gain experience and learn new things whilst earning mney. There are many benefits t being an apprentice frm earning mney whilst learning design, t seeing my wn wrk ut and abut. I wuld say that cmpared t studying full time, being an apprentice is much better as I am learning new things every day in the prfessinal wrld and I have nrmal weekends with nly sleep t catch up n, nt hmewrk!
8 HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP? T be an apprentice, yu must apply fr Apprenticeship vacancies r secure emplyment by cntacting businesses directly. It is essential that yu find an emplyer wh is able t supprt yu in a jb which will gives yu the skills and knwledge and behaviurs related t the qualificatin yu wish t study. There are a number f ways t d this: At any ne time, there are up t 28,000 Apprenticeships advertised in a variety f careers and industries acrss England. All vacancies are advertised thrugh the Find an Apprenticeship Service - The GOV website enables yu t build an applicatin frm, fllwing the step by step instructins t apply fr a rle. It is key that yu register yur details with ur Apprenticeship Recruitment Adviser wh can ffer yu supprt and guidance in finding the right emplyer and prgramme. A - Many f ur apprentices at Havant & Suth Dwns Cllege are kept n full-time after successful cmpletin f their Apprenticeship, creating great pprtunities fr yu t prgress int industry. Q - Is there an pprtunity fr my salary t increase? A - If yu are aged under 19, the Apprenticeship minimum wage is 3.50 an hur, hwever mst emplyers will pay mre than this. If yu re aged 19 r abve and in the secnd year f an Apprenticeship, yur salary must increase t at least the standard Natinal Minimum Wage fr yur age. Sme emplyers review pay a few mnths int the Apprenticeship nce initial training is cmpleted and dedicatin is shwn. On cmpletin f yur Apprenticeship, yur salary is likely t increase as a direct result f yu being ffered a full-time cntract. Q - Des an Apprenticeship allw me t prgress within my career? A - Apprenticeships give yu the pprtunity t gain a wide variety f skills and knwledge, which will enable yu t secure prgressin pprtunities thrugh future jb penings. Any prir wrk experience yu have gained is seen as an advantage t an emplyer. Experience gives yu the skills required t prgress with yur career.
10 Q - Can I prgress int ther careers n cmpletin f my Apprenticeships? A - Apprenticeships give yu jb specific skills which are tailred t the emplyment yu undertake. On cmpletin f yur Apprenticeship, yu will be able t prgress in yur emplyment setting r explre ther rles and skills which braden yur hrizns. Alternatively, yu may wish t study a higher level Apprenticeship, giving yu a wider set f experience, skills and knwledge. Q - Can I study an A Level r Vcatinal full-time curse alngside an Apprenticeship? A - Unfrtunately nt, Apprenticeships are a full-time jb and curse. Q - I haven t achieved my English and Maths; will I have t enrl t a Cllege t achieve these grades? A - Functinal Skills Math and English is a mandatry aspect f an Apprenticeship if yu have nt achieved GCSE Level 4-9. secured emplyment, and an Apprenticeship, yu will be autmatically enrlled t study Maths and English as part f yur prgramme, if yu already have the required grades and certificates yu will need t supply these as prf. Q - Will my parents/guardians still receive their benefits? A - As an apprentice, yu will be receiving a full-time wage and as direct result benefits may be affected. As everyne s situatin is different, we advise that yu cntact yur benefit prvider and any questins are discussed with the apprpriate advisr. Q - Can I d an Apprenticeship if I have a degree? A - If yu have a degree, yu will be cnsidered fr an Apprenticeship if the skills and knwledge are materially different t the curse yu studied in yur degree prgramme. Yu are nt able t undertake a qualificatin at a lwer level if yu have already achieved a Level 4 r higher in the same subject (this includes HNC/HND).
