7 About this documet Structure This documet supports the BaaERP 5.0b Product Cofiguratio (PCF) module that is part of the Maufacturig package. Part Oe describes the Product Cofiguratio (PCF) module as a tool; Part Two describes how the tool ca be used. Part Oe Chapter 1 places the module i perspective of BaaERP 5.0b, describes the module ad explais the relatioships with other modules. It also lists all busiess objects ad describes the flow betwee them. Fially it lists the prerequisites ad the master data eeded to ru this module. Chapter 2 through 6 describe the busiess objects. Each chapter explais the flow of the madatory steps withi a busiess object. A explaatio of the optioal steps cocludes each chapter. Part Two The chapters i this part describe the fuctioal procedure chapters. Each chapter provides a detailed explaatio of the flow of a fuctioal procedure. 9 1. The Product Cofiguratio (PCF) module i perspective This chapter describes the mai fuctios ad objectives of the Product Cofiguratio module. Iformatio is give about the module s fuctio withi BaaERP 5.0b ad how the module is related to other modules. Additioally, this chapter presets the module s busiess objects, the closes with the global set-up requiremets for the module. 1.1 The Product Cofiguratio module i BaaERP 5.0b The competitive power of a compay is determied more ad more by the speed with which it ca meet customer requiremets. Today s busiess should be capable of deliverig a customer specific product withi the delivery time of a stadard product. I a traditioal productio cotrol system, the product structure geerally cosists of: item data, such as delivery time ad cost price data relatig to the structure of items, such as bills of material data about operatios, such as routigs This system may be adequate for compaies producig oly oe or just a few products. However, if a large umber of variats of the fiished product are produced, they are usually oly assembled or maufactured whe the customer's order has bee received. I such cases, the traditioal iformatio system may ru ito problems with respect to the quatity, complexity, ad maageability of the product data ad the eed for timely availability of the iformatio. Almost ay compay that is assemblig to order deals with product variats. I that case, it is impossible to defie the product structure for all the versios of all fiished products i advace. The aswer to this problem is cofiguratio maagemet. This ca be traslated ito a well thought out, modular, product desig with proper validatio ad decisio support fuctios provided by the iformatio system to ehace the level of logistic cotrol. I the Product Cofiguratio (PCF) module, a product model is created, i which all the features of the product model are defied. By selectig the optios of the features, the customer defies the desired product variat. The traslatio of the customer requiremets ito the product structure of the variat is cotrolled by a set of decisio rules (costraits). These costraits idicate which compoets ad operatios will or will ot be used i a specific versio. Item data, such as the code ad a descriptio of a item, ca be geerated by the PCF module. A geeric price list ca be created i which matrices ca be used for product features which are depedet o each other for what affects the price. Costraits are used to determie the item data ad the sales ad purchase price of the geeric items. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 1-1

10 The Product Cofiguratio (PCF) module i perspective The product model is used i sales orders ad quotatios to traslate the customer requiremets ito a product variat. A budget is geerated for the quotatio to create the product structure (bills of material ad routig) of the variat. For this purpose, a project is geerated for a order. The sales price from a sales quotatio is compared to the budget to esure that it meets sales margi requiremets. A PCS project is used to pla, produce, ad cotrol the maufacturig of the product variat. With the statistics i the PCF module, isight ca be obtaied about the selected optios of the product model. This iformatio ca be used, after aalysis, as iput for a ew master productio schedule for the ext period. 11 The Product Cofiguratio (PCF) module i perspective The structure of the product variat is geerated i a budget or a PCS project. The item data for the geeric items ca be automatically defied. IPD ROU IBD PCF SLS PCS TP Project EP Figure 1-2 The modules related to the PCF module The PCF module uses the Item Base Data (IBD), Item Productio Data (IPD) ad Routig (ROU) modules to defie the geeric BOM ad routig for the product model. If a maufactured item is defied i the geeric BOM, the associated bill of material from the BOM module is used as a part of the total product structure. A product variat ad its structure ca be geerated for a budget ad a project i the Project Cotrol System (PCS) module from a product model i PCF. The budget is used to calculate the cost price; the project is used for plaig, productio, ad cotrol of the product variats. The relatioship betwee the Product Cofiguratio ad the Sales Cotrol (SLS) modules provides the ability to geerate product variats with a sales price for sales quotatios ad orders, usig a product model. A item that is cotrolled by the Master Plaig algorythm of Eterprise Plaig (EP) ca be a geeric item as well. I that case, the product model is associated with a master productio pla i Eterprise Plaig. I the geeric BOM a plaig percetage ca be etered for items that are cotrolled by the Material Requiremets Plaig algoryhtm of EP. I this case, it is possible to subdivide the demad for a product from a higher level ito forecasts for differet optios withi the bill of material. A coditio for this situatio is, that the product o that higher level is cotrolled by the Master Plaig system. A customized routig sheet will be defied whe a product variat structure is geerated for a project i the PCS module. Plaed capacity is visible i the Eterprise Plaig (EP) module for all the work ceters i the routig. It is also possible to defie a cofigured product as part of the BaaERP Project package. By creatig a model i which all possible variats are defied, it becomes easier to eter the bills of material ad routig i BaaERP 5.0b. If the model is draw o paper, the ext step is to use the PCF module fuctioality. A item of type geeric is defied that represets all the possible variats of a product. The features of the product model, with potetial optios, are recorded i the Product Features busiess object. These features are the basis for a questio ad aswer procedure used to record the product specificatios. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 1-4

13 The Product Cofiguratio (PCF) module i perspective By usig restrictive rules, called costraits, certai selectios ca be excluded or made madatory. Certai questios are asked by BaaERP 5.0b depedig o the aswers to previous questios. BaaERP 5.0b may provide default aswers or, i some cases, directly produce the aswer. The Product Costraits busiess object cotrols this. I additio to cotrollig the set of features, these costraits are also importat for the BOM, routig, item data, ad the price lists. Costraits esure that the optios selected by the customer are traslated ito the appropriate product structure with the correct prices ad item data. I the Geeric Bills of Material ad Routig, the product structure for all the possible variats of a product model is etered. The bills of material use the data from the Item Base Data (IBD) ad Item Productio Data (IPD) module for the stadard items that are a part of the product structure used to assemble the ed product. Plaig percetages for pla items ca be defied i the BOM, if a Master Pla is used at a higher level. A forecast ca be created for these items makig use of the master pla for the geeric item. The geeric routig uses the data from the Routig (ROU) module to defie work ceters, tasks, ad machies. The operatios i the routig ca be plaed by geeratig a product variat structure for a project. This iformatio is visible i the Eterprise Plaig (EP) module. The Geeric Egieerig Data busiess object ca geerate specific item data for a product variat, such as item code ad descriptios. By usig this fuctioality, a customized item is defied i Project Cotrol System (PCS). A geeric price list ca be defied i the Geeric Price Lists busiess object. Matrices ca be used if optios for product features that are depedet o each other ifluece the purchase or sales price for a product variat. If the Product Variat Cofiguratio is used i the Sales Cotrol (SLS) module, a sales price based o the data i the Geeric Price List busiess object ca be geerated. The purchase price ca also be geerated; it is used to determie the cost price of a product variat i the PCS module. The product model ca be used i the operatioal compay if the data i all the previously metioed busiess objects are filled. Product variats are geerated from the optios selected by the customer i the Product Variat Cofiguratio busiess object. The fuctioality of the PCF module ca be used i sales order ad quotatios i Sales Cotrol (SLS) module. The structure of the variats is geerated for a budget or a project i the PCS module. A product variat ca be archived if it is delivered to the customer ad the project is closed. By archivig, the statistics i the PCF module are created for the optios selected by the customer. Work ceters ad tasks must be defied i the ROU module before geeric routigs ca be etered. Geeric items ad stadard items must be defied with the Geeral Item Data (tcibd0501m000) ad Item Productio Data (tiipd0501m000) sessio before a product model is defied or a geeric BOM is created Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 1-6

15 2. The Product Features busiess object This chapter describes the Product Features busiess object ad gives iformatio about the busiess object s fuctios. I additio, the chapter idetifies ad explais the madatory ad optioal sessios related to the busiess object. Related parameters are metioed where applicable. 2.1 Descriptio of Product Features The product model is used i a questio ad aswer situatio to defie the product ad its total structure. The features that are defied i this busiess object are used as the questios for the customer. The aswers to the questios are used i the PCF module to determie the product structure, the sales price, ad the geeric item data for the variat. The fuctioality of this busiess object is used at the start of the procedure to create a product model. It is also used whe a product variat is geerated i the operatioal situatio. 2.2 Madatory sessios Product Features (tipcf0150m000) Product Features by Geeric Item (tipcf1101m000) Figure 2-1 Madatory sessios withi product features Product Features (tipcf0150m000) Properties ca be used i a questio ad aswer situatio to make it possible to describe the product eeded by the customer. These product features ca use optios that are defied i the sessio Optios by Product Feature (tipcf0160m000). Oe product feature ca cosist out of multiple optios. The features defied i this sessio are product idepedet. It is possible to zoom from this sessio to the Optios by Product Feature (tipcf0160m000) sessio. If there is a lot of commuicatio with exteral coectios ad customers i other laguages, the features ad potetial optios ca be traslated ito differet laguages. The PCF i Customer's Laguage parameter must be set to yes i the PCF Parameters (tipcf0100s000) sessio. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 2-1

16 The Product Features busiess object Product Features by Geeric Item (tipcf1101m000) Product features are used as the questios to create a product model. The questios are associated to a product model by eterig the appropriate product features, by geeric item, i the correct sequece. Product features ad optios are automatically take by the lower levels i the cofiguratio structure from the higher levels; therefore, it is ot ecessary to record these features at each level i the cofiguratio structure. Product features ca be cotrolled by date-effectivity to ease the phase i of ew of ew product features. Product features become product depedet i this sessio. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 2-2

I additio, the chapter idetifies ad explais the madatory ad optioal sessios related to the busiess object. Related parameters are metioed where applicable. 3.1 Descriptio of Product Costraits A costrait eables every possible decisio rule or calculatio coceivable, that ca be executed durig the defiitio of the variats, to be built. These decisio rules ca be used i the product model for the product features, geeric BOM, routig, price list, ad item data. These rules are defied with a costrait editor. A meta-laguage specifically devised for this purpose is used to defie costrait expressios; it is a subset of BaaERP 5.0b Tools. The fuctioality of this busiess object is used durig the etire procedure to create a product model. I the operatioal situatio, the costraits esure that the customer requiremets are traslated ito a product variat with a associated structure. 18 The Product Costraits busiess object Costraits by Geeric Item (tipcf2110m000) Costraits provide a flexible way to defie a geeric product model. These costraits are used as decisio rules. Costraits make it possible to idicate uder what coditios certai combiatios of optios are acceptable, madatory, or ot acceptable for product features, bills of material compoets, operatios, item data, ad price lists. I this sessio, the costraits are defied for a geeric item with the costrait editor (either the Baa Editor (ASCII) or graphical multi lie editor). I PCF Parameters (tipcf0100s000) sessio a umber of costrait expressio variables are predefied. These variables ca be furished with descriptios, or ames, oly oce. After product costraits have bee defied, the variables ames ca o loger be chaged. Various variables ca be idetified i the Product Cofigurator: parameter variables local ad global variables product features The parameter variables must be recorded i the PCF Parameters (tipcf0100s000) sessio. These variables are used to formulate the costraits. Local ad global parameters ca be created. By addig global, a local variable is coverted ito a global variable. A local variable is oly valid for the specific costrait i which it is used; a global variable ca be used i more tha oe costrait. The variable must be declared at the begiig of the costrait text i each situatio where the global variable is used i the costrait. Product features are also global variables. The product features ca be used throughout the etire PCF model. After a product feature receives a particular value, it keeps this value util aother value is etered for it. The fuctio of the Costraits by Geeric Item (tipcf2110m000) sessio is to record costraits for each costrait code. There are three costrait sectios that ca be used: before iput validatio parameter substitutio A costrait always uses a costrait sectio to defie the decisio rule. The followig table provides a descriptio about the differet costrait sectios. The possible combiatios betwee costrait sectios ad the various possibilities for which the costraits are formulated, are show i the followig table. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 3-2

Based o particular selectios, BaaERP 5.0b presets a recommeded optio for a particular characteristic. This optio value ca be overwritte by aother, providig iput is allowed. The validatio costrait excludes or icludes particular optio selectios; it validates, performs calculatios, ad ca be used to display messages. The parameter substitutio costrait esures that a certai calculated value or a value that is based o selectios is etered or exported. It is possible to defie differet costrait sectios for each costrait code Compile Costraits by Geeric Item (tipcf2201m000) The use of the product cofigurator ca be divided i two parts. The first part is product model defiitio; the secod part is the use of this product model i a operatioal situatio. I the developmet stage, the costraits must be tested to esure that o errors are preset, so that the model ca be used i the operatioal situatio. For this developmet stage a iterpreter versio ca be used. This versio is defied i the PCF Parameters (tipcf0100s000) sessio. Usig this versio meas that costraits are costatly read i ad iterpreted. The disadvatage of this versio is that the performace of the product cofigurator is reduced. That is why a differet versio is available for the operatioal situatio, the object versio. I this versio, costraits are directly executed by the product cofigurator as objects, without eedig to repeatedly read i ad iterpret or compile costraits i ru time. The object versio of the product cofigurator may result i a cosiderable performace improvemet compared to the iterpreter versio, particularly with more complex costraits. By usig the Compile Costraits by Geeric Item (tipcf2201m000) sessio, a object will be geerated for each item. For that reaso, it is possible to use the object versio. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 3-3

20 The Product Costraits busiess object 3.3 Other sessios Costrait IDs by Geeric Item (tipcf2101m000) Costraits ca be defied i differet PCF busiess objects. By creatig these costraits from withi these busiess objects, a costrait ID is geerated. If a compay wats to use idetificatio codes, differet from the geerated codes, the fuctioality of this sessio eables idetificatio code defiitio Costrait Validatio Messages (tipcf2120m000) Durig the cofiguratio process, a user sometimes eeds iformatio i additio to the descriptios of the product features. For example, the iformatio ca iclude: additioal iformatio about certai optios or iformatio if a mistake is made. This iformatio ca be provided by usig messages. If a costrait is etered by usig the validatio costrait sectio, messages ca be defied. The iformatio ca be etered as text by usig the costrait expressio message. The iformatio ca also be etered as a code, defied i this sessio, ad used i the costrait for the same costrait expressio. A advatage of usig this sessio for defiig the messages is that if chages eed to be made to the messages, it is easy to have all messages i oe sessio. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 3-4

21 4. The Geeric Egieerig Data busiess object This chapter describes the Geeric Egieerig Data busiess object ad gives iformatio about the busiess object s fuctios. I additio, the chapter idetifies ad explais the madatory ad optioal sessios related to the busiess object. Related parameters are metioed where applicable. 4.1 Descriptio of Geeric Egieerig Data The Geeric Egieerig Data busiess object cosists out of the followig madatory sessios: Settigs for Geeric Item Data Geeratio Data for geeric items ca be filled with customer specific data. The process for creatig item data is cotrolled with costraits. The fuctioality of this busiess object ca be used durig the etire procedure to create a product model. Geeric Bills of Materials The PCF module uses a geeric product model to geerate product variats with bills of materials defied by customer specificatio for the ed product. The process for the creatio of the bills of materials is cotrolled with costraits. The geeric BOM ca serve as the basis for forecast calculatio i Eterprise Plaig. The fuctioality of this busiess object ca be used durig the etire procedure to create the product model. It is also used i the operatioal situatio, if a product variat is created based o the requiremets of the customer. Geeric Routig By usig a geeric product model, the PCF module ca geerate ew product variats with a routig defied by customer specificatios for the ed product. The process for creatig the routig ca be cotrolled with costraits. The data of the geeric routig is used for capacity requiremets calculatio i the Eterprise Plaig module. The fuctioality of this busiess object ca be used durig the etire procedure to create the product model. It is also used i the operatioal situatio, if a product variat is created, based o the requiremets of the customer. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 4-1

22 The Geeric Egieerig Data busiess object 4.2 Madatory sessio Settigs for Geeric Item-Data Geeratio (tipcf3101m000) The customer s selectios ca be used to create item codes ad descriptios. For example, material, size, ad stadard of the customized items ad texts for quotatios ad orders ca be filled with situatio depedet ad fixed data. The created item data occurs if the structure of a product variat is geerated for a budget or a project. With a budget, the cost price of the product variat ca be calculated; a project is used to maufacture the product variat. The Geerate Project Structure for Sales Orders (tdsls4244m000) sessio is used to defie the project. If a item code is geerated for a project that correspods with a stadard item code with ivetory o had, BaaERP 5.0b icludes this item i the sales order ad a project is ot created Some parameters ifluece the fuctioality of this sessio. These parameters are all defied i the Maitai PCF Parameters (tipcf0100m000) sessio. If a idetifyig item code must be used, set the Idetifyig Item Code parameter to yes. If the item code geerated by the product cofigurator does ot uiquely idetify a product variat, the product cofigurator ca automatically geerate a uique code. The product cofigurator adds a sequece umber to the geerated item code usig the sequece umber from Item Code from Positio parameter i PCF Parameters (tipcf0100m000) sessio. This parameter is used to idicate from which positio of the item code the sequece umber must be geerated Geeric BOMs (tipcf3510m000) The customer s selectios ca be used to geerate bills of materials. Costraits cotrol the traslatio of customer requiremets to the compoets of the bills of materials for product variats. I this sessio, the geeric BOM is defied with all possible compoets. A plaig percetage ca be etered for the compoets of the BOM that are cotrolled by the MRP algorythm of EP. This makes it possible to create a forecast of the demad for this item, if the geeric item at a higher level uses the Master Plaig order system. If the Multi-Level PCF Choice Structure parameter is set to yes i the PCF Parameters (tipcf0100s000) sessio, extra geeric levels i the product structure ca be used for a multi-level selectio structure. Geeric BOM s ca ot make use of the ew Scrap quatity calculatio (to iclude i MRP) that is itroduced for productio BOM s i BaaERP 5.0b Geeric Routig (tipcf3520m000) 4.3 Other sessios The customer s selectios ca be used to geerate a routig. Costraits cotrol the traslatio of customer requiremets to a set of operatios that must be executed to maufacture the product variat. I this sessio, the geeric routig is defied with all possible operatios. Some remarks have to be made i compariso betwee Geeric Routigs ad Routigs as implemeted i BaaERP 5.0b. The Task Workceter Machie relatioship is implemeted as i a stadard Routig. Related parameters are metioed where applicable. 5.1 Descriptio of Geeric Price List A product variat that is geerated from customer specificatios ca have a detailed sales price based o the selected optios. Purchase prices for geeric items ca also be geerated. The purchase price is used to calculate the cost price. Matrices ca be defied if there are optios for differet product features that have mutual relatioships that ifluece the purchase or sales price. The sales ad purchase price calculatio is cotrolled with costraits. The fuctioality of this busiess object ca be used durig the etire procedure to create the product model. However, i most cases, the data is filled after defiig the features, geeric bills of materials, ad routig for the product model. It is also used i the operatioal situatio, if a sales price must be calculated for a product variat. Keep i mid that the sessios metioed i this object differ fudametally from the ew pricig module i BaaERP 5.0b where Price Matrices, Price Books ad e.g. Discout Schedules ca be defied. This Geeric Price List object is ot directly itegrated with the previously metioed objects. 5.2 Madatory sessios Geeric Price Lists (tipcf4101m000) The customer s selectios ca be used to geerate sales ad purchase prices. For this sessio a restrictio applies with regard to stadard ERP 5.0b fuctioality. Whe a sales order lie for a cofigured item is beig etered, BaaERP 5.0b ca calculate o-lie the lead time for producig the make-toorder parts (fial assembly schedule lead time), regardig (o)existig ivetory of stadard parts. It also calculates the variat s sales price. The fuctioality of this busiess object is used i the operatioal situatio to geerate product variats based o optios selected by the customer. It uses the product model that is created i the busiess objects described i the previous chapters. 6.2 Madatory sessios The sessios i this busiess object all geerate product variats. However, they each belog to a separate fuctioal procedure ad ca thus e.g. be foud i the Sales Order Maagemet object. These sessios have i commo that they all geerate product variats, whether they are used i a sales order, a sales quotatio, a BaaERP Project or a budget Product Variats (tipcf5501m000) This sessio is used to geerate a product variat for a geeric item. This product variat stores the optios selected by the customer. The product variat code makes it possible to geerate various variats for a geeric item. I most cases, this sessio is used automatically by BaaERP 5.0b. This is also true for the other sessios i this busiess object that geerate data. This sessio ca be used maually if a customer wats iformatio about optios ad prices without ay obligatio. I the implemetatio stage of the product model, it is also used maually to execute system tests. If a Product Variat is geerated for a geeric item that cosists out of multiple other geeric items, a Optio set will be geerated per geeric item. To calculate the sales price of a product variat, it is ecessary that a geeric price list is established for the geeric mai item Archive Product Variats (tipcf5290m000) Data ca be trasferred to a archive compay umber to prevet havig too much data stored o the hard disk for a operatioal compay umber. Oly the product variats that are o loger used i a budget, project, sales order, or quotatio ca be archived. The report provides a statistical overview for each geeric item, idicatig how ofte a particular optio of a product feature has bee selected durig a specific period. This iformatio is useful for recordig plaig percetages for compoets i the geeric BOM. These plaig percetages are used to correctly cotrol the plaig process i Eterprise Plaig. 31 7. The procedure to defie a product model This chapter describes the mai fuctios of the procedure to defie a product model. The objective of this chapter is to explai how ad whe the procedure is used, the order i which the steps eed to be followed, ad whe the steps are madatory ad/or optioal. 7.1 The procedure to defie a product model ad its result Compaies that assemble to order have problems related to the quatity, complexity, ad maageability of the product data ad the eed for timely availability of the iformatio, if a traditioal iformatio system is beig used. The aswer to this problem is cofiguratio maagemet. A cofiguratio method ca be used to geerate all variats of a product. If all the possible compoets of the bills of materials ad all the possible operatios for the routig are etered, every product structure of a variat ca be created. Product features are used as the questios that eed to be asked of the customer. The aswers are used to create the product variat. This is doe with decisio rules, called costraits. Costraits cotrol the traslatio of the optios selected by the ito the product structure of a variat. Item data ca be geerated i the same way as the product structure. With costraits, it becomes possible to geerate a item code, a descriptio, or eve a sales quotatio text. I the price list, the costraits cotrol that a sales price is geerated based o the optios selected by the customer. I Headig 7.2, the procedure used to defie a product model is described. Headig 7.3 explais the procedure used to test the created product model i differet stages of the implemetatio. It is useful to combie the procedures i these two paragraphs, if the PCF module is implemeted. 33 The procedure to defie a product model Model o paper Before executig the procedure steps, it is importat to make a model o paper. A BOM structure ad the routig structure may become too complex if the matter has bee give isufficiet thought. The geeric BOM ad routig form the basic data. The rest of the PCF module is built o this data. There are a umber of issues that eed to be cosidered i this phase: The BOM structure ad the selectio of the geeric items, item codes, ad item base - ad productio data. It is importat is to determie which items eed to be created. The mai item must be geeric. If selectios eed to be made from alterate items o a lower level, the items o the higher level also must be geeric. To determie the order system of geeric items, the followig guidelies ca be used: The geeric item with a idepedet demad ca be MPS cotrolled. Idepedet meas that the demad is ot determied by a demad from aother item i the same BOM structure. The geeric items with a depedet demad ca be MRP cotrolled. Depedet meas that the demad is determied by the geeric mai item. It is also importat thik about the routig structure. The codes of tasks, work ceters, ad machies that are used i the routig must be defied i the ROU module. The followig checklist ca be used to summarize the parts that eed to be icluded i a model o paper,: Draw the BOM structure Thik about the item codes Defie the geeric items Determie the order system of the geeric items Draw the routig structure Defie work ceters, tasks, ad machies After the model is o paper, the system is used to work out the pla. It ca be useful to create the product model i a demo compay, so that o mix up arises betwee operatioal ad test data. If the model is created, tested (as described i Headig 7.3),ad all the errors are removed, the product model ca be copied to a operatioal compay umber. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 7-3

34 The procedure to defie a product model The steps of the procedure The first step of the procedure is to determie the versio of the Product Cofigurator. If the model is i the creatio stage, the iterpreter versio ca be used. The advatage of this versio is that the geeric product model ca be tested immediately if ew costraits are created or chages eed to be made to these costraits, without first havig to recompile all costraits. The oly situatio i which the object versio must be used i the creatio stage of the model is if the extesive features of the Programmers Referece Maual (documet umber 5555US) are used. This is because the lies i the costraits that use this programmig are ot iterpreted i the iterpreter versio. If the object versio must be used, the costraits must be compiled with the Compile Costraits by Geeric Item (tipcf2201m000) sessio. If geeric items are used o more tha oe level i the BOM structure, the Multi level PCF Choice Structure parameter i step a must be set to yes to esure that the questio ad aswer sceario is used o differet levels. The secod step i the procedure is eterig the geeric items (step b) that are eeded for the product model. I step c, the required product features are etered. I this sessio, all product features with possible optios are recorded. It is useful to defie a self-explaatory code for the product feature, because it improves the readability whe they are used i costraits. This is also the case for the product variat statistics, where the codes are used to aalyze how ofte the optios of a certai feature are selected. The product features are associated to a geeric item i step d. Product features are cotrolled by the costraits, which are defied withi step f. Messages that cotai iformatio for the user ca be etered by usig these costraits. These messages ca be defied i step e, where codes are defied. The codes are used i step f. It is also possible to eter text i the costrait. The text is used as a message without defiig it i step e. Sectio describes costrait fuctioality ad shows i which situatios that fuctioality is used. I steps g ad h, the geeric product structure ad routig ca be etered. The costraits (step i) are used to esure that the product structure ad routig are i accordace with the selected optios. If a sales price (or purchase price for geeric purchase items) must be geerated, the geeric price list (step l) ca be used to defie a price list. It is possible to use matrices for differet features that have mutual relatioships associated to the price. By defiig the price list code (step j) ad the price list matrices (step k), the features ad values i the matrices ca be etered. Depedig how the matrix is used withi the geeric price list (step l), the values i the matrices represet prices or price factors. Product Cofiguratio (PCF) 7-4

35 The procedure to defie a product model Step m is used if a compay wats to use the iformatio give by the customer to create a item code, item descriptio, material, size, text, or stadard for a geeric item. The geeric price lists ad item data are cotrolled by the costraits (step i). If the product model is defied, the product cofigurator versio is chaged from iterpreter to object i the PCF Parameters (tipcf0100m000) sessio (step o). The object versio results i a cosiderable performace improvemet compared to the iterpreter versio. The last step i the procedure is to compile the costraits (step o), so that objects are geerated for each item. If errors are foud whe the system compiles costraits, they are logged i a system file with a ame similar to that of the costrait source file; the ame is assiged the suffix.e. This error file is also stored i the same directory as the costrait source file. If there are compilatio errors, it may be useful to examie the geerated costrait source file. After the errors are removed, the product model ca be used i the operatioal compay umber. 7.3 System test of the product model I this headig, the steps used to test the product model i three differet stages are described. The first check is to test the product features that are eeded to defie the product variat for the customer. I the secod test, a check is made to determie whether the selected optios will result i the correct product structure. The last test determies whether the sales price is i accordace with the selected product optios System test of the product features The test for the product features is used to determie whether the product model is i accordace with the operatioal situatio. This test will be executed after the steps a through f are executed i the procedure i headig This test is importat for determiig if: the questio list is complete ad i the correct sequece o superfluous questios are asked all the give optios are possible the setup of features is user-friedly The Product Variats (tipcf5501m000) sessio ca be used to test these poits.
