1 1/6 1.0 PURPOSE This specification describes the minimum required technical information to conduct the smelter ladles lifting attachment non-destructive evaluation in accordance with established Vale practices. This specification covers the guidelines for the non-destructive evaluation to be followed for the Copper Cliff Smelter ladles only. 2.0 RESPONSIBILITY All personnel performing the evaluation are to ensure compliance to this specification. Any deviation from this specification must be reported to the supervisor of the NDE group. The deviation will be subject to Vale s approval..0 PREREQUISITE Review of Safety Procedure No. 50. Magnetic Particle Testing 4.0 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION The personnel performing the evaluation shall be certified by Natural Resources Canada to CAN/CGSB for MT, Level 2 or 5.0 GENERAL All areas pertaining to the following items should be cleaned properly by abrasive blasting. See Appendix 1 for item identification and areas to be cleaned. Item No. Item 1 & 2 Left and Right trunnions & 4 Left and Right sockets 5 & 6 Rear tail lug 7 Tail hook Both trunnions and the tail hook require to be removed from the ladle before the inspection takes place.
2 2/6 Work Required on Left and Right Trunnions: Trunnions to be removed from sockets and cleaned free of build up, slag, matte, scale and dirt. Work Required on Left and Right Sockets: Sockets to be removed cleaned free of build up, slag, matte, scale and dirt. Work Required on Rear tail Lug: Tail hooks to be removed and lugs to be cleaned of scale and matte. Work required on tail hook: Tail hook to be removed and cleaned of scale and matte. 6.0 PROCEDURE Inspector to follow proper plant/shop entry procedures. It is the responsibility of the inspector to ensure that all components have been inspected as per specification. It shall also be his responsibility to ensure that an inspection sign-off sheet is signed off for the ladle. The areas to be inspected shall be clean and free of build-up, scale, dirt and grease. Magnetic Particle Inspection is to be carried out on the areas shown on the sketch (Appendix 1) in accordance with ASTM E709 with the following: A) Ac yoke with a lifting force of 10 lbs. B) Dry magnetic particles. C) Continuous magnetization. D) A permanent rare earth magnetic yoke with a lifting force of 40 lbs (verified within 24hrs of use) may be utilized (ref ASME Sec 5). All defects to be repaired are marked, numbered, recorded, and reported to the Shop Foreman. All repair areas are to be re-inspected after defect removal to ensure complete removal and following the repair prior to being returned to service.
3 /6 7.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA No cracks allowed on any of the areas inspected. 8.0 REPORT Inspection documentation maintained at the contractors work site is forwarded to Smelter maintenance following repair by the contractor. For major inspections, the NDE personnel is to fill-up the inspection date in the Smelter ladle weekly tracking sheet (\\netapp\smf1\mtce\ladles\ladles and Repairs\Weekly Ladle Sheets) Areas to be cleaned and inspected by magnetic particles
