2 Two Days Customised Course on (9am to 5pm) Objectives of the course For offshore construction, oil & gas, petrochemical and shipping industries steels are still the major construction material. An understanding of the various steels and related alloys that are used in these industries is essential for design, maintenance, procurement and other engineering staff to increase productivity and profitability. This course is designed as Metallurgy for Non-Metallurgist and will provide participants with a basic understanding of the properties of engineering steels and alloys and how they are used in industry. The participant should be able to recognize the different steels available in the market and their various properties such as strength, fracture resistance and corrosion. How the chemical composition and inclusions influences their properties and weldability. Who Should Attend Supervisors, engineers and technicians involved in product design, fabrication, testing, materials selection, maintenance and procurement. While an engineering or science degree or diploma will be helpful, it is not a prerequisite to attend this course. What You Will Learn At the end of this course the participants will have a basic understanding about: - 1. How materials are manufactured. 2. Effects of metal chemistry, heat treatment and discontinuities. 3. How materials properties are obtained by different. heat treatment and/or manufacturing process. 3. How essential materials properties are measured. 4. Practical examples of critical failure analysis and how to avoid such failures. 5. Practical demonstration of critical mechanical and corrosion tests for metals and coatings.

3 (9am to 5pm) Course Contents Day One: Fundamental properties of metals and alloys The atomic structure of metals and how it affects properties, what happens when metals are cast, the significance of grain structure, dislocations and how they influence mechanical properties, and how phase diagrams can be used to explain the structure of engineering alloys. How steel plate, sections and pipes are manufacture A brief description of iron and steel making and the different processes that are used to shape the steels in different forms. Different type of heat treatment to produce required mechanical properties. Any other topic(s) interest to the participants. Q & A session and Discussion. Day Two: Types of steels and their application. Type of steels and their properties with special reference to offshore construction. Various types of microstructures and how this relates to end properties. Description of different type of properties and the test procedures. Practical tests demonstration in the laboratory. Any other topic(s) interest to the participants. Q & A session and Discussion. Examination and Certificate distribution. NOTE: Participants suggestions are welcome for any specific topic(s) during registration and course coordinator will try to accommodate if possible.

4 About the Course Instructors Dr Asim Bag B.Eng., M.Tech, Ph.D, CEng. MIMMM Dr Bag is a Chartered Metallurgical Engineer and has excellent combination of Technical Leadership, Management, Innovation and Industrial experiences for over 30 years in the fields of, materials testing, failure investigation, corrosion, fatigue & fracture, structure-property correlation, materials selection, heat treatment, laboratory setup and expert witness testimony from the initial legal proceedings through trial. Dr Bag has setup numbers of world-class materials testing laboratories around the world. He has received several awards from USA, UK, Singapore and India in the fields of steel and microstructural science. He has over 45 publications and over 200 citations in high impact factor archival journals of noteworthy merit. Dr Bag is currently Managing Director, Examat Pte Ltd, recently build state-of-the-art Materials Testing Laboratory in Singapore. Over one decade Dr Bag was materials, corrosion, welding and failure investigation consultant for McDermott. Prior to the current positions Dr Bag was Technical Director, Canadoil Group, Thailand and Technical Director (oil & gas): Middle East, Asia / Asia Pacific for Exova Group (formerly Bodycote Testing Group). In 2006 Dr Bag joined Bodycote as an Operations Director to build Materials Testing Laboratory in Singapore with his own design HIC and SSCC testing facilities from green grass. During 2000 to 2006 he was with Det Norske Veritas Pte Ltd (presently DNV-GL), Singapore as Principal Engineer and Head of Materials Technology Laboratory to provide demanding materials consulting, failure investigation and testing services to oil & gas, petrochemical, offshore structures and defence industries. From 1998 to 2000 he was Research Fellow, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Prior to this, 1987 to 1998 Dr Bag was Manager and Head, Materials Science Laboratory, Research & Development Centre, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka, India. Where, he has developed a surface treatment technique for gears to improve the pitting fatigue life by more than twice compared to that of carburized gears. Dr Bag has solved several materials engineering problems and performed thousands of failure investigation on components from petrochemical, oil & gas, transmission pipelines, offshore structures, ships, earth moving equipment, food processing equipment, pharmaceutical plants, gas turbine engine components, steel mill and defense equipment. Over the last decade he has conducted several technical courses and delivered numbers of invited lectures around the world related to materials technology, failure analysis, fatigue & fracture, corrosion and modern steel technology with special reference to quality requirements for oil & gas industries. Dr Bag has served as investigation team leader for many major failure investigation cases around the world for steel, oil & gas, petrochemical and offshore industries. He has also served as expert witness testimony in Singapore High Court for many failure investigation cases. Mr Tusar Kanti Roy B.Eng.(Metallurgy), MBA Mr Roy is a metallurgist with over fifteen years experience in the fields of materials testing, failure investigation, corrosion, microstructure characterization, materials selection and heat treatment. He is acquainted with various international standards for oil & gas, marine and other industrial materials. Mr Roy is currently Director of Operations, Examat Pte Ltd, prior to the current position he was laboratory head, Canadoil Group, Thailand. From 2008 to 2010 he was Laboratory Manager for Exova Singapore (formerly Bodycote Testing Group). During 1999 to 2004 he was with Central Manufacturing Technology Institute, Bangalore, India. Mr Roy has delivered many projects for McDermott, Swiber Offshore Construction, Thai Nippon Steel Engineering, Bredero Saw, FMC, Nippon Steel Engineering etc. as an ISO17025 Accredited Signatory for over five years.
