Past Chairman of the Association of Lecturers in Arboriculture Professional Experience Dave Dowson is the Director of Tree Life AC Ltd and Tree Legal Ltd providing a full range of consultancy services to a range of clients which include Parish Councils and Local Authorities (LA), large development companies, solicitors, mortgage lenders, landscape architects, planning consultants and Health and Safety Executive and providing educational consultancy services for bodies such as the Royal Forestry Society, Arboricultural Association, National Arborist Association, International Society of Arboriculture and the Awarding Body Consortium. Dave has been a registered expert witness for ten years. His experiences include providing preliminary and final reports for the Health and Safety Executive, solicitors and court room use where neighbour disputes have occurred and breaches of Tree Preservation Orders. In the last six years, he has specialised in the area of tree inspection, failure and defensible systems of tree inspection and recently attended a coroners court related to a death caused by a tree failure. He is currently involved in cases of tree related injuries/deaths nation wide. He has assisted Southampton City Council, the National Trust and Burleigh House Estates to design their system of tree risk management based on zoning providing external independent advice. Recently he has externally audited Sheffield City Council s system of tree risk management identifying weaknesses and making recommendations to strengthen their procedures. He is a member of the working party compiling a new British Standard on Tree inspection which has now reached the consultation stage. He is the author, principal

3 trainer and moderator of the nationally recognised professional tree inspection programme offered by LANTRA, the industry lead body. He presents workshops related to safety issues for the industry, speaks at National conferences and provides material for publication in a range of newsletters and journals of the industry. It will consist of mainly classroom training on both days including a site visit session in the first day. The course will start with an in-depth look at the aims and use of BS The scope will include the following. Scope: Give Recommendations and Guidance Assist those concerned with trees to form balanced judgements How to decide which trees are appropriate for retention The means of protecting retained trees The means of incorporating trees into the developed landscape The lecturer will demonstrate and present how the following steps can be done professionally and appropriately to meet the standards. 4 Arboricultural Implications Assessment and design issues Arboricultural Method statement Tree Protection Plan And finally how to sort out the instruction with the client Each candidate will be provided with templates and other relevant information which they can take away on disk Introduction to Professional Tree Inspection Course This is a two-day programme including a half-day site visit. This course aims to provide specific tree survey and inspection training at the basic level for contractors, highway engineers, tree wardens, grounds maintenance staff, rangers and other workers of a non-arboricultural background or with limited arboricultural knowledge, to allow them to identify obvious defects from ground level and them to report their findings to a line manager. Objectives: To identify obvious defects by visual inspection of the trees from ground level with the aid of binoculars, mallet and a probe. To record defects and place the tree in a broad category of hazard rating Identify the required action upon finding a tree with an obvious defect. Visual tree inspection-theory session Tree as an undamaged self optimised structure Axiom of uniform stress Identification of obvious defects theory session to include: fungal fruiting bodies, cavities, deadwood, tensile forks, root severance, die back in crowns, wilting, de bark, slimes and fluxes, ivy, subsiding major limbs and significant bulges. This course is accompanied by a work book but the training course does not carry an assessment process. This course is also suitable for dedicated tree inspectors, tree workers, assistant and principal arboricultural officers wishing to complete an advanced programme which has an assessment process. The advanced programme is a British Industry lead body Approved/credited course.

All cheques shall be crossed and made payable to the organizer LNS Ltd to confirm registration and are subject to bank clearance. 3. There is no refund for cancellation of booking initiated by registrant. However, the registration may be transferred to another person from the same company or organisation at no extra charge by notifying the organiser at least 3 days prior to the commencement of the course. 4. The Organiser reserves the right to cancel the course should there be insufficient candidates or for other reasons. Course fee will then be refunded 100%. 5.
