DESCRIPTION Earth and Life Sciences intrduces students t key cncepts in the bilgical, envirnmental and earth sciences. This cntent is filtered thrugh fur umbrella cncepts f the MOETT primary science syllabus: Individuals and Grups, Frm and Functin, Systems and Interactins and Cnservatin and Sustainability. Teachers are expsed t theretical knwledge and practical activities which will prvide them with the cnfidence and skills t effectively deliver cntent thrugh inquiry based teaching and ther student-centred appraches. The majrity f teaching sessins incrprate practical inquiry activities and r prblem slving exercises. As such regular attendance is essential. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end f the prgramme student teachers will be able t: 1. Identify the structures and prcesses that distinguish living things. 2. Identify the characteristics f the majr vertebrate and invertebrate grups. 3. Describe the develpment stages f select vertebrate and invertebrate rganisms. 4. Explain the relatinship between individual and grup characteristics. 5. Describe the basic structure and functins f plant and animal cells and the main human bdy rgans and systems. 6. The practical investigatins, lessn plan, and micrteaching are marked by rubrics which utline the criteria f perfrmance expected. Cperative grup wrk is marked at bth the individual and grup level t ensure accuntability. The criteria expected f individuals in the grup are utlined in the assignment instructins and in the rubrics.

11 2. Practical investigatins assess students knwledge and applicatin f the science prcess skills and their use as methds f inquiry in prblem slving. It als assesses students understandings f the nature f Science. These refer t the utcmes f Units 1 &2. 3. Micr teaching and lessn planning assess the utcmes f Units 3&4. These activities ask students t apply their knwledge f hw pupils learn science t the 5E apprach t planning Science as inquiry. 4. Frmative assessment ccurs thrughut and at the end f each sessin. Active discussins, quick quizzes and student presentatins prvide students with feedback n their perfrmance, as well as allw instructrs t adjust lessns accrdingly. EVALUATION AND GRADING: Rubrics and marking schemes are included in the curse assessment handuts and bklets. Aggregatin & Re-assessment Rules In rder t pass this curse, prspective teachers must gain 50% and ver. The mark is based n the sum f the curse wrk and final examinatin. 12 COURSE POLICIES Class Structure The structure f this class will be a cmbinatin f instructr-led discussin, in-class activities, individual/ grup labratry wrk, quizzes, and prjects. Any final prject r assignment is due n the last day f class. Assignments will nt be accepted after the last day. Attendance: The study f science is cumulative (i.e. an understanding f earlier material is necessary t grasp later cvered cncepts.) Past experience has shwn a high relatinship between absences and lw grades. Furthermre, absences will severely limit interactin with ther students. It is very imprtant that yu make every effrt t attend every class. It is the plicy f UTT t debar student with less than 80% class attendance frm writing the final examinatin. Late Assignment All assignments are due accrding t the curse calendar. Any late assignment received within ne week after the date due will be graded and then assigned a scre equivalent t 80% f the earned grade. Assignments will nt be accepted (and a grade f 0 pints given) mre than ne week after the assignment is due. The late plicy des nt apply t a final prject r assignment which must be turned in by the last week f class. Schedule The schedule fr the curse is listed n the curse calendar. All due dates are sectin specific and will be supplied t yu by yur instructr at the first class meeting. The Mdule tests are nt scheduled n this curse calendar. The instructr will assign all Mdule test dates. Academic Integrity Academic integrity is submitting ne's wn wrk and prperly acknwledging the wrk f thers. Any vilatin f this principle cnstitutes academic dishnesty and is liable t result in disciplinary actin. Frms f academic dishnesty include: Plagiarism - submitting all r part f anther's wrk as ne's wn in an academic exercise, such as an examinatin, cmputer prgram, r written assignment. Please nte that allwing smene t submit yur wrk als cnstitutes plagiarism n yur part. Cheating - using r attempting t use unauthrized materials n an examinatin r assignment, such as using unauthrized texts r ntes r imprperly btaining, r attempting t btain, cpies f an examinatin r answers t an examinatin. Facilitating Academic Dishnesty - helping anther cmmit an act f dishnesty, such as substituting fr an examinatin r cmpleting an assignment fr smene else. Fabricatin - altering r transmitting, withut authrizatin, academic infrmatin r recrds.
