Marie Wells Technology Manager (designate) Danny McGee Chief Engineer Job Purpose: To undertake research and deliver projects for the security sector consistent with the requirements of the Advanced Production Systems Group and its Assembly Systems team. To use your expertise to provide technical leadership to others in the team. 2 To provide technical leadership to others in areas of expertise. To support the Technology Manager & Senior Research Engineers in the organisation of required resources (people, equipment, marketing collateral and MTC facilities) needed to deliver research projects. And generate new project ideas in alignment with the themes strategy. To provide mentoring and coaching to other staff while undertaking training to progress your own career development. To work in accordance with MTC procedures as set out in the company s Business Management System, compliant with ISO9001:2008. To lead the development of proposals for defence and security projects and lead engagement with existing customers to win repeat business. To lead technical liaison with customer during project delivery. To ensure that work is undertaken to meet or exceed the customers quality expectations and within the budgets and timescales allocated. Tasks may include: Researching technologies, benchmarking, down-selection, preparing technical reports, presenting work to customers, producing concepts, implementing solutions, devising and undertaking experiments. Will include work in other sectors however when there is work clearance will mean the candidate may be required to be security and defence biased Candidate Specification: The role is suited to an Engineer who already has some experience in design, mechatronics, automated systems or project delivery and has the desire to increase their knowledge of, and undertake projects in the afore mentioned fields. An understanding of machine design and/or CNC machines and control strategy as well as an understanding of complex environments would be a nice to have. The post holder will need to be able to demonstrate a high level of autonomy. The successful applicant will be placed in a team based environment where their technical understanding will be challenged; They must be able communicate clearly to technical 819 JD SRE Machine Design (cleared) (v5) Page 2 of 6
3 and non-technical audiences inside and outside of the MTC. Key Deliverables: The post holder will be expected to: Manage their time effectively to achieve on-time delivery Manage project and task budgets Liaise with customer and MTC s workshop staff and manage scope/budget of work. Deliver tasks to a quality in-line with what the MTC and our customers demands and the budget allows. Work in a safe manner at all times. Work towards a professional accreditation Work with discretion within a mixed environment Specific project objectives will be provided by the Technology Manager once the candidate is in post. 4 Essential Desirable Competencies / Behaviours Self-motivated with ability to meet deadlines and can produce reports/presentations to the required and appropriate standard Excellent written and oral communication skills. Can demonstrate the ability to communicate technical data to a non-technical audience Ability to work as part of a team or an individual where necessary Pragmatic hands on approach to problem solving and happy to roll up own sleeve to complete work Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills Project Management Skills Good, general technical knowledge with experience of working with and specifying special purpose machinery for use in industry. An understanding of methods employed in research of low TRL methods for use in industry. Technical Skills and Knowledge A BSc or BEng degree in an appropriate engineering subject. Minimum of 5 year in a manufacturing or design engineering role with evidence of the application of CAD skills Good report writing skills Demonstrable knowledge of design for working with difficult environmental conditions, machining and containment within complex parameters. MSc in an appropriate STEM subject 7 years in a manufacturing or design engineering role with evidence of the application of CAD skills In depth technical knowledge of designing, manufacturing and commissioning special purpose machines, equipment, tooling and fixturing. 5 Demonstrable knowledge of problem solving tools and error-proofing techniques. Has a firm understanding of engineering principles and can apply techniques to typical MTC engineering applications. including the use of appropriate data handling software. An understanding of machine design and/or CNC machines and control strategy. General Skills / Attributes Excellent IT skills proficient in the use of all Microsoft Office packages. Competent in the use of MS Project Project management skills Ability to present technical data and reports to a varied audience Evidence of being highly competent in MS Project Agile project management skills and SCRUM Proven ability to lead and deliver high profile customer projects Competent in writing case studies Experience Other Minimum of 5 year in a manufacturing or design engineering role with evidence of the application of CAD skills. Experience and knowledge of manufacturing techniques and principles. Evidence of working autonomously, with project management experience. Evidence of functioning in a team environment. Commitment to observing the MTC s Equality & Diversity policies at all times. 7 years in a manufacturing or design engineering role with evidence of the application of CAD skills. 7 years working on designing and commissioning special purpose machines, equipment, tooling and fixturing.
