1 FACULTY OF SCIENCE Compliance Technician (Electrical Safety-PAT) Ref: TC527 The Post This technical post supports our busy and diverse science schools within the Faculty of Science. Primarily involving Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) across research and teaching areas along with offices and other school spaces, this role provides core service support that underpins essential health and safety legal compliance. The postholder will be working under the direction of the Electrical Safety Officer to ensure that all aspects of the IET code of practice for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment are followed and complied with. The precise duties will be agreed in discussion with the Manager. Person Specification The person specification for this post is attached as Appendix B. GENERAL Salary Salary will be 18,212 to 20,400 per annum on Grade 4 on the single salary spine. The normal expectation is that starting salary will be at the minimum of the advertised salary scale. Starting date The post is available from 1 May 2016 on an indefinite full-time basis. 2 Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of 20 days plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. 5 APPENDIX A JOB DESCRIPTION REF: TC527 Job Title: Compliance Technician (Electrical Safety-PAT) Grade: 4 School/Department: Reporting to: Faculty of Science Laboratory Manager Job Function/Purpose: To provide a high standard of technical support to the Faculty of Science. Providing Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) to all the research and teaching laboratories, offices and school areas. Job Specific Duties: The post duties include, but are not limited to: Technical Duties: Working with the electrical safety officer to ensure that all portable electrical equipment within the science faculty is periodically tested. Responsible for the day to day testing of a wide range of specialist electrical equipment. Keeping the equipment and testing database up to date with new equipment, tested equipment and equipment for disposal. Ensuring that equipment is tested on time as identified through appropriate risk assessment and by the equipment database. Administration and Supervision: Setting up a new equipment database to record the location and identity of every piece of electrical equipment in the science faculty. Liaising with the electrical safety officer to ensure good electrical safety practices are being used throughout the faculty. Organising the repair of equipment that has failed. Offering advice and guidance to staff on basic electrical safety as required. Ensuring that all new equipment is recorded and uploaded to the electrical equipment database. Liaising with staff and students to arrange the testing of their equipment. Working alongside staff and students to try and minimise equipment downtime and impact during testing.
6 Health and Safety: Ensure that all electrical testing is completed to the standards laid down in the Code of Practice for In-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. Keep up to date with changes and updates to codes of practice and the law. Work within many different laboratory environments, observing any local health and safety rules. Any other such duties as may be assigned by the Manager The post is part of the technical services support structure. The duties listed below give an indication of the type and level of activity that fall within the grade range for this post. The post holder may be asked to undertake duties of a similar level of complexity and responsibility. Laboratory Support and Services: Preparation and clearing of laboratory practicals and experiments following instruction. Assisting with decontamination under guidance. Responsible for maintaining adequate stock levels. Preparing specialist materials and solutions Maintaining laboratory records including COSHH and Risk Assessment forms. Administration and Supervision: Identify items for purchase to maintain agreed stock levels. Providing assistance and guidance to junior staff as appropriate. Submitting recharge information to Science Finance office. Health and Safety: Assisting with the identification of hazardous waste nomenclature. Responsible for the collation, storage and recording of hazardous waste. Preparation of paper work and packaging of samples deemed to need to be transported under the Transport of Dangerous Goods Act. Provide Health and Safety inductions for staff and students following guidelines. Provide advice on Health and Safety policy and protocols to staff and students. Undertake electrical safety checks on equipment. Equipment and Instrumentation: Routine operation and maintenance of specialist equipment. Calibration of equipment.
7 Staff and Student Support: Assisting undergraduates and postgraduates with basic technical related problems Instructing staff and students in the operation of standard laboratory equipment and techniques. Research: Undertake directed research and specialist procedures following detailed protocols. Care and maintenance of research and teaching specimens and cultures. Assist with the collection of samples from the field where appropriate. Collection and recording of data and uploading to software systems. Participating in laboratory meetings and presenting research results. Maintaining an accurate and comprehensive laboratory notebook.

Previous experience in working with electrical wiring and/or appliances in a commercial or domestic setting. Demonstrable experience in carrying out portable appliance testing. Experience of working as part of a team Excellent communication skills in English language. Good IT skills. Good interpersonal skills. Good organisational and time management skills An interest in science Ability to understand and conform to current Health and Safety Regulations. Able to both convey and understand communication with fellow workers. Self-motivated Able to use own initiative. Reliable and conscientious with a flexible approach to working.
