1 Job Description Job Title: Head of Development (this post is part of the Senior Management Team in relation to income and fundraising strategy) Salary: On application Hours: 35 hours per week ( ) Location: Reporting to: 4 The Switchback, Gardner Road, Maidenhead, Berks SL6 7RJ The External Affairs Direct Reports: Fundraising Manager (team of 5) Media and Communications (team of 2) (External PR organisation contributing 2 days/month) Membership (1) This is a fabulous opportunity for the right candidate who wants to help to take us through our next cycle of growth. NRAS is the voice of people affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) in the UK. It is a national charity, supporting all those who live with these diseases, their families and the health professionals who care for them. As a small charity, with a current income of circa 1m, it achieves a huge amount on a small budget, punches well above its weight and now seeks to appoint a Head of Development to lead the fundraising team and implement our three year strategy to help take it to the next stage in its growth and development. 1. Main Purpose of Job To work closely with the Fundraising Manager and the SMT to implement the fundraising strategy and further develop this to reach the charity s target of m income by end (Currently approx. 1M) To raise awareness of NRAS and its work to broaden its supporter base, both in terms of direct membership, friends and supporters and fundraising activity To lead and further develop the FR team in line with our new FR and organisation strategy (currently being finalised), working with the CEO and Senior Management Team to maximise the potential income stemming from the new FR strategy. To contribute to the strategic planning of the charity in relation to FR and general marketing of the organisation to raise awareness of both RA/JIA and NRAS, and to contribute as necessary to Board meetings with the Trustees in relation to the above.

Position in Organisation CEO Commissioned Svcs External Affairs Finance Policy and Public Affairs Officer Head of Development Membership and Individual Giving Officer Fundraising Manager Web & Digital Media Officer Design Intern (1 year post) JIA Manager External PR Company 2 days/mth The post holder will report to the External Affairs and line manage the following: Fundraising Manager, Web & Digital Media Officer & Design Intern although the Design Intern will be doing work for all teams in the charity and so line managing this position will be more about helping them to prioritise workload. Membership and Individual Giving Officer. The post holder will work closely with: The CEO, the Finance Director and External Affairs and other department heads as a member of the Senior Management Team relating to income and FR and general promotion of the organisation/marketing/public awareness of RA/JIA. Members and volunteers External fundraising contacts eg corporates, high net worth individuals, key contacts with Trusts who support the charity External industry contacts Other charities and health professional organisations In 2016 we will be outsourcing media and PR to a company who will be providing us with 2 days/month. This company will be working with all teams across the charity but a significant amount of work will fall into the FR, membership, social media domain and the Head of Development will co-ordinate this in relation to that sphere of work. 3. Scope of Job Fundraising strategic planning - fundraising strategy, fundraising budget and cost control, income generation Management line supervision of fundraising manager and overseeing of fundraising staff function, line supervision of the above direct reports

3 Development strategic planning and development of income generation with the senior management team (SMT) Marketing strategic planning and development with SMT Creation and editing of our magazine (3 issues/year) training will be given 4. Decision Making Authority Budgeting setting the fundraising budget and managing this throughout the year Responsible for fundraising decisions Setting the membership budget and managing this throughout the year Responsible for membership decisions Ensuring NRAS operates within Fundraising Standards Board guidelines 5. Qualifications and Skills Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications Experience Demonstrable fundraising experience and achievements Management, lead and motivation of a team Understanding and implementation of fundraising techniques and processes Development, implementation and management of budgets Fundraising strategy and planning Decision making Experience of marketing in relation to fundraising activity Degree level or equivalent Fundraising qualification Working with High Net Worth individuals Work with volunteers Understanding of voluntary sector Knowledge and Skills Excellent written and oral communication skills Proficient use of Microsoft Word; Excel; Powerpoint Proficient use of databases and data management Financial management and planning Use of Salesforce database Understanding of the health environment Understanding of Rheumatoid Arthritis and its treatment Personal Circumstances & Attributes Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines Highly motivated and committed Positive outlook and approach Ability to represent charity at senior level Willingness to travel and work out of hours when required Full driving licence and car owner Calm under pressure Strategic thinker Ability to present to large groups of people

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities Fundraising and membership and budget control (50%) Oversee implementation of the fundraising strategy to ensure targets are reached Set income and expenditure targets for each income stream (in association with Fundraising Manager) Set and oversee the implementation of membership targets and budgets with the Membership and Individual Giving Officer Monitor income on a regular basis and ensure accurate financial records are kept, working with the Finance Lead on the charity s industry partnerships as they relate to FR Marketing (25%) Support and develop market research to understand NRAS s market position, how it can be improved and what might attract supporters, members and volunteers Develop marketing campaigns, working with Web and Digital Media Officer, to raise awareness of NRAS and its work within its key strategic aims, using case studies etc. Work with the Web & Digital Media Officer and Design Intern to ensure that the NRAS brand is consistent and being used across the charity to create brand identity Work with the outsourced PR agency to maximise PR opportunities, nationally, regionally and locally to support marketing and FR strategies and projects Development (15%) Identify, develop and support ways for NRAS to increase income, raise awareness with those who live with RA and the wider general public Identify potential new funding sources and ideas Develop corporate and industry partnerships for joint working and funding Management (10%) Provide strong leadership and management of direct report employees within fundraising and communications Monitor performance of direct reports through regular one to one supervision Participate in, and contribute to, team meetings Identify suitable training for fundraising and communications teams Other Duties Some travel throughout the UK (and some out of UK travel), involving some overnight stays Out of hours working, including occasional weekends (particularly supporting FR events) Attendance and participation in team meetings Any other duties as requested by the SMT Representing NRAS Represent NRAS in a senior capacity to external stakeholders, funders and partners promoting it as a respected, trusted and ambitious charity resulting in partnerships, successful funding and effective collaborative working.
