1 Good Practice Development Officer Job Description Job Title: Hours: mployer: Responsible to: Responsible for: Current Location: Good Practice Development Officer 35 Hours per week Lambeth Voluntary Action Council Volunteer Centre Manager Managing up to two members of staff and a team of volunteers Volunteer Centre Lambeth, 35 Brixton Station Road, London SW9 8PB Although must be prepared to work at any other designated site in Lambeth and also be willing to travel extensively across the Borough and throughout London when the need arises. Main Purpose of the Job: The Good Practice Development Officer will be responsible for supporting and developing groups in Lambeth by promoting and encouraging good practice in the recruitment and management of volunteers. The post holder will raise awareness of good practice in volunteer management throughout the Borough and offer support, training, tools and advice to groups/organisations enabling them to better manage their volunteers and improve the effectiveness of their programmes, this includes helping them to recruit volunteers through the Brokerage project. Internally the post holder will work with LVAC s senior management team to develop good practice systems, policies and procedures ensuring that LVAC Volunteer Centre Lambeth is committed to a cycle of continual improvement and achieving quality across services. In addition to Good Practice, this post will be responsible for overseeing the internal volunteer services, including the brokerage service, training, monitoring and evaluation, website, health and safety and general administration. Main Duties Support, Information and Training 1. Offering good practice support to groups and organizations who involve volunteers, across all sectors to establish new or develop existing volunteer programmes. Assessing their volunteering, training and good practice needs and identifying appropriate ways in which to meet them. 2. Promoting and implementing the Good Practice health check and London s Volunteer Management Charter. Use the tools with groups and organizations who involve volunteers to help them to assess areas which need improvement in the recruitment and management of volunteers, to help them to develop good practice policies and processes and to measure their progress against the key functions of their volunteer programmes. 3. Producing written tools, guides and fact sheets on good practice in volunteer management and making them accessible to voluntary and community organisations in the most effective manner. Page 1
2 4. Developing, coordinating and delivering, a programme of volunteer management training for volunteer-involving organizations and their volunteers. Identifying and coordinating access to relevant training outside of LVAC or Volunteer Centre Lambeth for these groups. 5. Developing and maintaining monitoring and evaluation systems to ensure that the outcomes and impacts of the Good Practice project and Volunteer Centre generally are measured. 6. Helping to maintain information on the Volunteer Centre website; ensuring that information is current and useful. Brokerage service & internal volunteer scheme 7. Working with the Volunteer Development Officer to oversee the brokerage service and use of the Vbase database; ensuring that information on the database is kept up to date, relevant and accurate. Also ensuring volunteering opportunities are available, current and accessible through 8. nsuring that organizations and individuals contacting Volunteer Centre Lambeth are responded to and supported in a timely and professional manner. Liaise with them to ensure the brokerage and Good Practice Services continue to be useful to them. 9. Developing innovative ways to engage and support organizations from the Public, Private and third sectors and to work with them to improve good practice in the management of volunteers and to develop fresh and interesting opportunities for volunteers in Lambeth. 10. Working with the Volunteer Brokerage Officer to oversee the internal volunteer scheme to ensure it is working toward good practice in the recruitment and management of volunteers and to ensure that volunteers are supported, developed, rewarded and recognized for their contribution. Building Networks and Outreach 11. xploring ways to create links and networks between local voluntary and community organisations, to assist them in improving their volunteer management policies and practices. 12. Managing, supporting and facilitating the Volunteer Involvers Network as directed by LVAC s Volunteer Centre Manager, ensuring it is useful, relevant and continues in a strategic manner. 13. Promoting the value of volunteering widely throughout the Borough of Lambeth and promoting the services offered by LVAC and Volunteer Centre Lambeth. 14. Working with the Good Practice Officers in the Central London Sub-region and wider to ensure Good practice is benchmarked across the area and to share resources and learning. 15. Outreach work to ensure the Volunteer Centre is reaching hidden and disenfranchised groups in Lambeth. General 16. Overseeing internal administrative systems (admin is managed centrally in LVAC, but the Volunteer Centre is a small, developing organization and there is the necessity for small administrative tasks to be undertaken at the centre) 17. Overseeing Health and Safety on behalf of the organization (training will be given where necessary) 18. Positively contributing to the overall work of Lambeth Volunteer Centre by establishing & sustaining effective teamwork & relationships with all stakeholders. 19. Contributing to and developing Lambeth Voluntary Action Council and Volunteer Centre Lambeth s publications including e-bulletins, newsletters, annual reports, leaflets and other appropriate promotional documents. 20. Producing monthly e-bulletins to keep volunteer-involving organizations up to date and to offer support/information. 21. Assisting with the co-ordination and organisation of events and forums in conjunction with the Volunteer Centre Manager or other authorized LVAC Management Team member. 22. Working with the Volunteer Centre Manager to ensure the organisation is working towards achieving quality in the six core functions of a Volunteer Centre and assisting with achieving the quality accreditation standards as they arise. 3 GNRAL RSPONSIBILITIS (common to all staff members) To help ensure that the equality of opportunity is integral to LVAC s work and in particular, to ensure that the needs interest of black and minority ethnic and other marginalised groups are fully recognised in all aspects of its work. To undertake all necessary steps to be familiar with the Health and Safety Policy, taking due regard for the health and safety of oneself, colleagues and visitors co-ordinating in the implementation and observation of statutory requirements. To work with other LVAC team members, to attend LVAC staff meetings, supervision, training (as identified and deemed appropriate), trustee meetings (as and when required) and other activities as appropriate. To be part of LVAC s rota when necessary, providing holiday and sickness cover etc. To be self-servicing administratively, e.g. undertaking own word processing, report preparation, photocopying, etc. Together with other members of the LVAC team prepare material for Lambeth Link, LVAC s newsletter and both the Voluteer Centre and LVAC s websites. To contribute to LVAC s role as a Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) by developing an awareness of the requirements of Lambeth s voluntary sector. To champion the Lambeth Compact. To produce progress reports for funders and contribute to the general fundraising for your post. All staff are required to work to a work-plan and take responsibility for the monitoring and evaluation of their work area. To promote the role and membership of LVAC by the development and positive marketing of its support services. To treat with confidentiality any information about individual voluntary organisations and/or users, staff etc of individual voluntary organisations that is personal, private or sensitive. To undertake any other task that may be required occasionally, in furtherance to LVAC s objectives. The above is an outline of your key tasks and responsibilities in your role as Good Practice Development Officer, as befits a voluntary sector organisation you may be called upon from time to time to undertake duties defined by your line manager or the Director that are not listed.
