Presenter Ntes: Once everyne has had a chance t respnd and all cards are cllected, select a few respnses t read alud t the grup. The purpse here is t help bth yuth and adults learn a little mre abut the ther grup and t understand them better! Time permitting, yu may allw a bit f grup discussin abut sme f the cmments. Be sure t keep the cnversatin in a psitive light! Small Grups We re nw ging t ask yu t get int grups f 5-6 (r table grups). Yuth and adults can be included in the same grups. Please write yur respnses t each f these 3 questins n a sheet f flip chart paper. Be prepared t share yur respnses with the rest f the grup. Presenter ntes: After grups have had a few minutes t write their respnses t each questin, invite a grup t vlunteer t share their answers t the first questin. Then ask a secnd grup t share new answers t the first questin. Cntinue with each grup until all new answers have been shared. Repeat this prcess with the 2 nd and 3 rd questins. Yuth-Adult Partnership Definitin Here s the definitin that Wikipedia prvides t us fr a Yuth-Adult Partnership. A cuple f key phrases are included in this definitin: Cnscius relatinship this is nt smething that typically will just happen by accident; we need t make a cnscius effrt t be sure that it des! Intergeneratinal equity big wrds! But what this means is that yuth and adults (frm multiple generatins) have equal pprtunities and respnsibilities in this partnership. Keys t Successful Yuth - Adult Partnerships Over the next few slides we ll identify sme tips (r keys) that will help yu t develp an effective Yuth and Adult Partnership at hme. We ll ffer sme suggestins and actin steps that yu can take, but we want t hear yur gd ideas as well!! Let s get started! #1 It is nrmal fr any grup f peple wh cme tgether fr the first time t be a little nervus and perhaps a bit uncmfrtable. We re all in a new situatin. And, if tw grups aren t nes that typically meet tgether (like yuth and adults), then this anxiety may increase a bit mre. This key encurages us t find ways t help us all feel mre cmfrtable with each ther. An rientatin meeting with the yuth and adult members can help identify each ther s rles, the verall purpse f the grup, and what we hpe t accmplish tgether. A sample rientatin meeting agenda is prvided as a part f this sessin. Especially in an established rganizatin, asking sme f the adult bard members t serve in a mentr rle with the new yuth members can help the yuth t feel mre cmfrtable. This adult mentr culd be ne that the yuth member cntacts with questins, lks t fr advice, etc. Ice breakers are a gd idea with any grup. They dn t need t be lng r require a lt f supplies, but smething that will encurage all members f the grup t interact with ne anther, at least briefly. Having an activity like this at the beginning f the meeting, r even a few minutes befre it starts (fr thse 2 M 10 M 1-2 M Each Key

And, it will encurage the yuth t feel mre cmfrtable cntributing t the discussin. #2 #3 #4 #5 In any rganizatin, it is imprtant t knw yur expectatins and respnsibilities up frnt. 1. The rientatin meeting is included here again. Much f these expectatins can be utlined and discussed in a meeting such as this when all members are relatively new t the prcess. 2. Psitin descriptins fr yuth and adult members help individuals knw what is expected f them. 3. Mutual respect this is smething that shuld be utlined as ne f the expectatins up frnt. Yuth and adults must have respect fr each ther in rder fr this partnership t wrk in the lng run. This will be a persnal cmmitment that each member makes. Frm time t time the leadership f the grup may need t remind the grup that, while it is O.K. t disagree with each ther, it needs t be handled in a respectful way. Depending upn the situatin, yuth r adult members may start t dminate the cnversatin/partnership. There are times that this may be O.K.; there are thers when the leadership f the grup may need t remind the grup t listen t each ther s ideas r when the leader may need t encurage participatin frm grup members that are being silent. By-laws are the set f perating prcedures fr the grup. In effect it is similar t an individual member s psitin descriptin, but fr an rganizatin. The bylaws shuld utline the membership f the verall grup, including wh gets t vte n issues. This will help insure that yuth and adult vices are equally heard. Cmmittee membership shuld include a mix yuth and adults as well. The numbers may nt always be equal, but shuld prvide pprtunities fr bth grups t have input int the cmmittee s wrk. This key is particularly targeted t the adult members. Adults smetimes have the mindset that they need t dictate t the yuth, t direct their experience, with little r n input frm the yuth participants. Our gal is t prvide a psitive yuth develpment experience WITH the yuth, nt smething that adults d TO the yuth. Orientatin f adult members may ccur at the general rientatin meeting, but may als need t ccur prir t that time ften when they are first selected t be a member f the partnership. Emphasize the imprtance f their effrts, but als that the yuth will be equal partners in the prcess. Adults wh are nt cmfrtable with this arrangement, will need t find ther avenues t share their time and talents. N ne has time t be a part f a grup that des nt d imprtant wrk. We want ur effrts t have meaning and t make a difference in the lives f the peple wh live in ur cmmunities. Review/establish rganizatin missin and visin statements statements that describe why the rganizatin exists. Then, based n these statements, establish gals that will be meaningful t the grup. As with all gals, they

T help identify ptential gals, yuth and adults can take a lk at the needs f the cmmunity. Visit with cmmunity leaders t see what these needs are and hw the rganizatin may be able t fill a unique niche. This key refers t thse rganizatins that have been established fr many years and that have strng traditins. Certainly, there is benefit t cntinuing with the prgrams and activities that wrk well. But, this key encurages the grup t think a bit mre bradly. With the additin f yuth t the partnership, what additinal pprtunities can this prvide? These questins can lead t sme great discussin! Brainstrm tgether ask yuth and adults t respnd t questins such as these (remember in brainstrming, there are NO bad ideas!): What are sme new activities that we culd add t ur rganizatin? What culd we change slightly t make (insert name f activity) mre effective, educatinal, and exciting? What is smething that we have always dne that may have utlived its usefulness? Based n this brainstrmed list f ideas, what ne r tw ideas culd we cnsider fr the cming year? Hw can we maintain ur strng traditin, but als grw/expand t meet additinal needs and interests that have been identified? We have identified a number f things that this YAP can accmplish. Nw it s time t g t wrk! Bth yuth and adult members shuld assume respnsibility fr the cmpletin f the tasks. As mentined in an earlier key, well-written psitin descriptins will help utline the expectatins and respnsibilities f all members. One f thse items shuld definitely address this key! Cmmittee membership fr specific activities and tasks that are t be cmpleted shuld include bth yuth and adults. Perhaps have a yuth and an adult serve as a c-chair f the cmmittee. What a great way fr bth t learn frm each ther! Earlier we discussed the imprtance f establishing meaningful gals. Meaningful rles fr all members are als crucial t keep each persn actively invlved in the rganizatin. Setting cmmittees as we ve als discussed earlier is ne way t accmplish this. Here are tw thers: Delegating respnsibility t members f the rganizatin is an imprtant way t prvide each persn an pprtunity t serve. By delegating, yu are telling that persn that yu believe he r she has the skills and abilities t accmplish the task that can be a really gd feeling (fr Yuth and Adults)! Thse t whm respnsibility has been delegated need t be ready and willing t accept the respnsibility! Nthing will hurt a YAP mre quickly than fr individuals t nt fllw-thrugh with the tasks that they have been assigned. If a member is nt cmfrtable with a respnsibility that has been assigned, that persn needs t be hnest and seek help, r ask fr smething else that he/she will be able t accmplish successfully. Supprt frm additinal partnership members will be critical at this step!

Nw that we have assumed respnsibilities fr tasks, we need t fllw thrugh and cmplete them! Mentring Sme tasks are mre difficult than thers and may require sme additinal assistance. Pairing an adult with a yuth t serve in a mentring capacity can be an effective methd t help the yuth better understand the task at hand and hw t cmplete it successfully. It can als be effective in helping the adults t better appreciate the abilities f the yuth members. Cmmittee reprts at each meeting can help the members f the cmmittee keep n track. Each meeting they can give an update n the prgress that has been made since the last meeting. Questins and answers can keep the whle grup better infrmed. Timelines can als help cmmittee members keep n track. Jintly established, these timelines prvide smaller gals t accmplish by certain dates, leading up t the successful implementatin/cmpletin f the activity/task. #10 Evaluatin is smetimes verlked, but always an extremely imprtant part f any effrt! Knwing ahead f time what yu hpe t accmplish will help the grup t develp a prgram r cmplete a task that is designed t achieve these results successfully. Reflectin time fr all f the participants and planners will allw fr them t share what they liked abut the event; what went well; suggestins fr imprvement in future years; and things that they wuld d differently next time. This reflectin can be cmpleted rally, in writing, r electrnically. Regardless f the methd, time shuld be allcated at the rganizatin s meeting fr the yuth and adults t have an pen discussin abut the recently-cmpleted activity. Prviding cnstructive feedback (psitive and negative) is a wnderful educatinal experience fr all invlved. Setting the stage ahead f time fr this feedback will enable all t be ready t receive it. Celebrating successes can be a great way t end an event. Celebratin can be smething simple like a verbal recgnitin during a meeting, invlve a special certificate r plaque, r smething mre elabrate like a celebratin dinner. Different methds f celebratin can be held thrughut the year t allw fr variety. Each methd shws that the individual and grup effrts were valued and appreciated. Rle Play Scenaris 4-H Club Bake Sale Presenter Ntes: ask fr vlunteers t play varius rles and read the respective lines fr each rle. Discussin Prblems that may be identified: The Adult Leader disregarded Jimmy s cmment t hld the bake sale at the library; instead the Leader stated that it wuld be held at the fire statin. The Adult Leader did nt thank Angie fr her suggestin. The Adult Leader did nt accept Jimmy s ffer t bring brwnies; instead the Leader asked fr smething else. 4 M

When analyzed further, there may be mre public traffic at a library rather than a fire statin. This may have been a terrific mve! The leader can acknwledge and thank the members fr their cntributins and perhaps suggest sme additinal items that culd be brught t prvide fr mre variety. A cmmittee f yuth/adults can be established t wrk ut the details rather than having the discussin led by an adult. The chairman f the bake sale cmmittee can then lead discussin with the grup. It s Yur Turn! Presenter Ntes: share the instructins frm the slide with the participants. Encurage them t be creative. Prvide mst, if nt all, f the grups a chance t present their skit t the rest f the grup (as time permits). Encurage the thers in the audience t respnd regarding gd pints they nticed abut the YAP in the skit as well as areas the YAP can be imprved. They can use their Keys wrksheet t help identify these characteristics. Activity Presenter ntes: Ask fr 3 vlunteers t g ut f the meeting rm. Once they are ut f the rm, give the fllwing instructins t the rest f the audience: The vlunteers will cme in ne at a time and state their name, where they are frm, and their hbbies. As audience members we will react t each f them differently: Fr the first vlunteer, we will BOO very ludly AFTER he is dne speaking. Fr the secnd vlunteer, we will talk and interrupt his speech when he tries t give his infrmatin. Fr the third vlunteer, we will cheer and clap very ludly after his presentatin. Presenter ntes: Instruct each vlunteer t return t the rm at yur invitatin. When they enter the rm they are t state their name, where they are frm, and list their hbbies. Invite each vlunteer t return t the classrm ne at a time. 10 M 5 M After the activity, ask the vlunteers: Hw did yu feel during/after yur presentatin? What were yu thinking befre yu entered the rm? What can we learn frm this activity? What is the pint? We dn t always think abut the way we treat peple. Be careful t nt be rude r t speak when thers are speaking In YAP, we need t be sure that we are being plite t all yuth and adults invlved. The success f ur verall rganizatin depends upn ur ability t wrk well with thers! YAP Benefits There are a number f benefits that can be realized as a result f effective yuth-adult partnerships. In these rles, the yuth make decisins and prvide input.
