Soy Cultivation in Bavarian Conditions Ripening groups: 00 und 000 Cultivars Sowing time: Mid April Beginning of May Harvest: End of August Beginning of October Critical factors for success: Weed control Availability of water at time of blooming Temperatures not < 8 C at time of blooming Good ripening conditions harvest if possible in September 09/2012-4

Potential There are no unused agricultural areas for Soy cultivation in Bavaria/Germany Soy is always competing for growing area with other agricultural crops Winter Wheat Winter Barley Summer Barley Corn The competitiveness of Soy governs the decision for or against its cultivation Potential yield in favorable conditions: 4 4,5 t/ha current average yield: 2,7 t/ha Canola ha ha ha ha ha Quelle: Bayer. 7 GMO in Europe/Germany No commercial cultivation of GMOs in Germany The labeling of food and feed is governed by the EU regulations (VO (EG) Nr.1829/2003, 1830/2003) (Adventitious or technically unavoidable traces of 0.9 % GVO with EU approval are tolerated in food and feed, 0,1 % GVO without EU approval are with additional requirements tolerated in feed.) The label without GMO is made possible through national law; requirements are for instance: No use of GMO feed (depending on animal species defined periods, e.g. at least 3 months GMO free feeding of dairy cattle) In food the adventitious or technically unavoidable traces of GMO are not tolerated (detection limit 0,1 %) No use of additives (e.g. vitamins, enzymes) that have been produced with genetically modified microorganisms Seed: No limit value established ( null tolerance )

Trade and Processing Harvest: ca t Chiefly used as feed Collection by private trade and trading cooperatives, processing companies Five processing plants Cumulative capacity ca t Thermal or hydrothermal treatment Two plants extract part of the oil (8-10 % residual oil) No plant for complete oil extraction 09/2012-7

Research and Developement Trials of the LfL (Cultivars, cultivation techniques, weed control in organic production) Demonstrational plots Research to optimize the processing of Soy Feed trials with cattle, pigs, poultry Breeding: so far no breeding program at the LfL; but: The LfL is keen on cooperating. 09/2012-8

Counseling and Knowledge Transfer The LfL is cooperating with public and private counselors (Trials, skill enhancement, offer of information) Extensive counseling and information offer Trial guiding Group and personal counseling Seminars etc. Print media Internet 09/2012-9

Future Prospekts The promotion of soy cultivation is an important component of the Bavarian protein strategy With the Action Program Domestic Protein Feed Bavaria is focusing its activities for the promotion of domestic protein provision and providing corresponding financial means The action Program will be continued with the focus on Research Counseling Transfer of Knowledge The Danube-Soy Initiative offers the chance, to improve breeding, cultivation and processing of soy to extend the supply of GMO free soy produced in Europe 09/
