BULGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology Soil drought monitoring in Bulgaria Tania Marinova Sofia, Bulgaria
The soil drought monitoring in Bulgaria is implemented by various organizations, for example research ones such as: Institute of Meliorations and Mechanization (national center in the field of irrigation), Soil Institute Pushkarov, Agricultural Institute in General Toshevo, Agricultural University in Plovdiv, etc. It is necessary to point out that the above organizations implement soil drought monitoring (including measurements of soil moisture), mainly in limited regions or locations. It is considered that the main national system for direct measurements of soil moisture is based in the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The agrometeorological network of the NINH consists of 32 agrometeorological,, 59 agrophenological and 15 forest phenological stations.
Fig.1. Agrometeorological network of the NIMH BAS in Bulgaria: agrometeorological ( ), agrophenological ( )and forest phenological ( ) stations
The NIMH agrometeorological service provides information about more than 200 meteorological and agrometeorological parameters, including measurements for soil moisture monitoring. The gravimetric method of measuring soil moisture is applied. Usually these measurements are carried on limited areas for all 10 cm layers down to a depth of 100 cm every ten days as well as once a month for all 20 cm layers down to a depth of 200 cm. Every month assessment of soil moisture for the territory of the country, prepared by specialists from Division of Agrometeorology, is published in the Monthly Bulletin of the NIMH using operative agrometeorological information.
Fig.2. Soil moisture (in % from full soil moisture content) under spring crops, 27 August The light blue shows the areas affected by soil drought at the end of August (source: Monthly Bulletin of the NIMH)
Digitization of agrometeorological information the Current agrometeorological information is recorded in paper forms and then it is sent to the NIMH in Sofia through the Regional Branches of the NIMH in Pleven, Varna, Plovdiv and Kjustendil. Digitization of current and historical agrometeorological data from the Agrometeorological Archive of the HIMH into computercompatible form is completed by the staff of the Meteorological Database Management Division by means of MS Excel. Agrometeorological database of the NIMH - AgroDB During the last several years a modern agrometeorological database AgroDB was developed (Windows Server 2003, RDBMS MS SQL Server 2000) within the frame of a project from the scientific plan of the NIMH by specialists from Meteorological Database Management Division and Division of Agrometeorology at the Department of Meteorology. All digitized agrometeorological information is imported into AgroDB.
The structure of agrometeorolo- gical database AgroDB consists of basic, code and meta tables. HUM_SOIL PHEN LPSV2 LPSV29 LPSV7 AGTM STATE PPV VOL_WEIGHT WILT_HU Basic tables Soil moisture by layers across 10 / 20 cm Phenology Leaf surface and dry biomass of wheat Leaf surface and dry biomass of sunflower Leaf surface and dry biomass of maize Agrotechnical activities Plants condition and inspections Full soil moisture content (FSMC) Specific gravity Wilting point (WP) KOD_GROUP KOD_CROP KOD_SORT KOD_PHASE STATION AMM_NABL AMM_SHCEMES GMM_NABL Code tables Codes of group of plants Codes of plants Codes of varieties Codes of phenological stages Meta tables Detailed information about agrometeorological and agrophenological stations (station number and name, geographical location (longitude, latitude and altitude, station opening/ closure, etc.) Information about the observers in agrometeorological network Year and author of the schemes of the fields Information about the observers in the forest phenological stations
