31 The food and drink industry, the primary industrial sector in Spain The food and drink industry is the driving force of the Spanish economy. The records achieved in variables such as production, employment and exports, surpassing their historical highs, confirm its role as the country s leading industrial sector. Thus, the value of production in 2017 recorded a rise of 1% with respect to 2016, when the production rate exceeded 96,400 million euros, a figure accounting for close to 3% of the GDP of the whole economy and above 21% of the manufacturing industry. In terms of employment, the food and drink industry is a key player in the structuring of the territory, contributing almost half a million people with direct work in the sector. The increase in consumption has led to this context of record employment figures, which have risen by 4% in comparison with All these data enable us to refer to the food and drink industry as a well-established, competitive and stable sector. A sector which is broadening and improving its presence abroad According to the latest estimates, the food and drink industry has once again broken its own records, exporting products valued at around 300,000 million euros, an increase of approximately 9%. These data mean that, for the ninth year in a row, we can make a positive contribution to the trade balance. The quality and prestige of Spanish food have become powerful selling points in markets around the world. The efforts and capacity of vision of the food industry companies have brought about this state of affairs, placing the sector at the forefront of activity while changing its mentality and internalizing internationalization as a strategic pillar. According to the ranking of destination markets, the European Union (led by France, followed by Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Germany) is the leading trade partner, followed by the United States (5.6%), China (4%), Japan (2.5%), Switzerland (1.2%) and Mexico (1.1%). With regard to the classification by products, the data for 2016 rank pork products and by-products as registering the highest exports, with a figure above 4,420 million euros, followed by olive oil (3,366 million euros), fish and canned fish (2,905 million euros) and wine (2,745 million euros). They are followed by canned vegetables, sweet products, milk and dairy products, table olives, beef products and by-products and oleaginous oils. Features such as safety, quality, trust and prestige are essential for the success of foreign sales. These values, together with the capacity for the adaptation of Spanish food industry companies to the differing needs of each country and their high degree of competitiveness, have made it feasible for the sector to expand and improve its international presence. The commitment to the consumer s present and future The Spanish food and drink industry fulfils a basic function: to provide a wide range of safe and highquality products for the population. This constitutes a fundamental commitment to bring about the improvement of citizens current-day and future quality of life by means of food while, at the same time, building a safe, healthy and sustainable industrial sector in economic, social and environmental terms.

32 The sector is strengthening its links with health by means of the promotion of healthy lifestyles, the Mediterranean diet, the balance between a varied diet and physical activity and partnerships with companies within the sector and public agents for the prevention of obesity among the population. In addition, food in Spain complies with the highest quality and safety standards set by the European Union. The connection between the food industry and the environment in which it conducts its activity makes sustainability and the fight against climate change priorities for the sector. Moreover, industry is facing the challenge of feeding a growing population while minimizing its environmental impact and being efficient in the use of the available resources. The application of measures such as the transition to a circular economy, energy efficiency, the fight against food waste, the creation of smart packaging and the minimization of the impact of production activity are signs of the steps already implemented by the sector to create a sustainable and sustained production environment. All these commitments are based on an ongoing partnership with innovation. The food and drink industry is one of the sectors which is most committed to R&D&I to meet consumers demands and interests. Thus, via the Food For Life-Spain Technological Platform headed by FIAB, the sector has already promoted more than 700 projects worth 1,500 million euros since This is an endeavour involving the entire agri-food chain, together with technological centres, the Administration, Universities and other organizations focusing on food R&D. The food and drink sector is one of the main ambassadors of Marca España abroad, as it serves as a flagship for Spanish culture around the world, in which the tourism-gastronomy-food trinomial plays a key role. Spain has been able to build up a range of foods and gastronomic riches enjoyed by very few countries, making it unique.
