Wggoner ws rised on his fmily s frm in centrl Knss nd otined his Bchelor s (2000) nd Mster s (2001) degrees in Animl Science from Knss Stte University. He completed his Doctorte in Ruminnt Nutrition t New Mexico Stte University in 2007 where his work evluted the impcts of moridity on performnce nd profitility in feedlot cttle nd nutrient utiliztion in stressed cttle. As Knss ntive, I m excited out the opportunity to serve eef cttle producers nd county gents in Southwest Knss, Wggoner sid. Wggoner hopes to ssist eef cttle producers in ll sectors of the industry y providing them with informtion regrding nutrition nd mngement strtegies tht improve profitility. Wggoner lso intends to continue pursuing his reserch interests regrding the influence of nutrition nd mngement prctices on cttle helth nd performnce. Wggoner my e reched t the Southwest Are Reserch nd Extension Office in Grden City t (620) or jwggon@ksu.edu. Modified stocking strtegies increse opportunities Keith Hrmoney, rngelnd scientist, A griculture Reserch Center-Hys Beef production on western Knss rngelnds is primrily dominted y cow/clf pirs. As tool to mnge pstures during yers of low precipittion, producers my lso include stocker nimls tht cn e mrketed t ny time to enle them to destock nd restock rngelnds without liquidting their min reeding herd. Intensive-erly stocking (IES), prctice tht stocks nimls t greter densities for the first hlf of the growing seson nd then totlly removes the nimls for the lst hlf of the growing seson, effectively utilizes erly seson vegettion t its highest level of nutrition. On shortgrss rngelnd in western Knss, stockers re typiclly grzed from My to Octoer under continuous seson long stocking (SLS) compred to My to mid-july in intensive-erly stocking. Individul niml gins during the erly growing seson re similr etween nimls stocked t twice the norml moderte seson-long stocking density (2X IES), nd nimls stocked t norml moderte seson long (SLS) density (Tle 1). Triple stocked intensive-erly stocking (3X IES) hs lso een evluted in western Knss, however erly seson individul niml gins nd end of seson grss dry mtter production (decreses rngelnd productivity) re significntly lower. Totl eef production on per cre sis is similr etween doule stocked intensive erly grzing nd seson long stocking in western Knss, while in estern Knss intensive erly doule stocking hs significntly greter eef production. Vegettive composition nd production re lso similr under the two stocking methods in western Knss. 2 Stocking Strtegies from pge 1. If cow/clf producers wnt flexiility in their eef cttle opertion, the ddition of stocker grzing cn provide tht flexiility. Rngelnds cn lso e stocked with modified intensive erly system, ut not ll modified systems re eneficil in western Knss. When implementing modified system t Hys, which stocked t doule stocking rte during the erly seson nd then removed hlf of the nimls t mid-seson (2X + 1 IES), erly seson niml gins were 15% lower thn for seson long stocking in two out of four yers, nd full seson individul niml gins were 25% lower for the modified system in three of four yers. A slightly different modified intensive erly system (1.6X + 1 IES) reduced the density of nimls erly in the seson to 1.6 times norml then removed the heviest nimls t mid-seson to leve lighter set of nimls on psture t norml density for the lst hlf of the seson. The gol of this system ws to retin mximum erly seson gins experienced y seson long systems ut with greter niml density, nd to increse lte seson gins per niml nd gins per cre y llowing more forge regrowth to e ville per lte seson niml unit stocked. Removl of the heviest nimls t mid-seson, rther thn rndom selection of nimls, results in hevier, more uniform nimls for direct plcement into the feedlot. This 1.6X + 1 modified system with removl of the heviest nimls t the middle of the growing seson hs een compred to continuous seson long stocking from 2002 to 2007 t the KSU Ag Reserch Center in Hys. No difference hs een found etween verge dily gins nd totl niml gin for the seson long nd 1.6X + 1 systems during the first or lst hlf of the seson (Tle 2). Unlike the previous modified 2x + 1 IES study, niml gins were not reduced during either prt of the grzing seson, nd totl seson-long gin from nimls tht remined on psture from My to Octoer in oth the seson long nd the modified 1.6X systems were equl. Becuse niml gins were similr yet stocking rte ws greter for the modified 1.6X + 1 system, eef production per cre ws greter for the 1.6X + 1 system thn the seson long (85 l/cre vs. 69 l/cre). The incresed eef production lso creted n increse in net income ove seson long stocking of $9.84/cre ove purchse nd interest costs. Vegettive composition nd production etween the two systems hs lso een similr during this time spn. The only difference thus fr in vegettive composition hs een tht ufflogrss composition in the modified 1.6X + 1 system hs incresed y 0.5 percentge points per yer more quickly thn the seson long system. The totl seson stocking rte with the modified 1.6X + 1 system is out 20-25% greter thn with seson long stocking, nd is likely t the mximum level expected to not reduce nimls gins or vegettive productivity since 3X nd 2X + 1 systems, with stocking rtes 50% greter thn seson long stocking rtes, hve resulted in rpid declines in niml gin nd vegettive productivity. If cow/clf producers wnt flexiility in their eef cttle opertion, the ddition of stocker grzing cn provide tht flexiility. The reserch summrized here used steers s the stocker nimls, ut replcement heifers my lso work to initite stocker grzing progrm. An erly pregnncy test might e used to selectively remove nimls. Further, the option to implement different stocking strtegies, SLS, 2X IES, or 1.6X + 1 IES, provides even greter flexiility y offering different times nd proportions of nimls redy to mrket. Regrdless of the opertion, stocker strtegy likely exists tht could fit into most eef cow/clf production systems. Tle 1.
