The technology was assessed against the voluntary environmental labeling standard for Recycled Rubber Products: AELA-Recycled Rubber Details: Page 2

3 PROJECT BACKGROUND Energy Australia called for tenders for an access road for 33 kv Feeder 5 from Beresfield Substation. Ecoflex Civil Constructions were the successful tenderers and constructed an E-Pave access road to fulfil the clients requirements. The tender also called for a bridge structure to enable the access road to cross a Hunter Water Cement Lined Steel Pipe water supply to Newcastle with IL 1720mm below Ground Level and 965mm diameter. The water main was approximately 700mm below ground in soil conditions of CBR <1. The pipe crossed the access road at an angle that prevented a bridge crossing at right angles, due to easement constraints and vehicular traffic requirements (long pole trucks). Ecoflex Engineers developed a portable Bridging System (E-Bridge) to overcome these problems. The E-Bridge was manufactured offsite in two parts, then delivered by a small float and installed by mobile crane. The E Bridge will be dismantled once power pole construction is complete and moved to another site to be re-used. The E Bridge took 7 hours to build at an estimated cost of $12,000 compared to conventional methods of several days at a cost of $60,000 The client had particular regards to the unique properties of the Ecoflex Systems; namely: Cost The E-Bridge system is estimated to have reduced costs by around 80%. Performance The engineering design and stress computer modelling was approved by independent engineer and Hunter Water prior to construction. Environmental Low impact environmental considerations were a major factor in the selection of the E-Bridge System for this project, no digging or drilling into the potentially acid sulphate soils was required with E-Bridge. Time Construction was completed and the bridge operational in one day. Sustainability The Ecoflex units and all the steel components are recycled materials. Page 3

Dickson and Assoc. The project involved the design and specification of the bridge to be approved by Hunter Water engineers it also had to be low cost, a temporary structure would be satisfactory for the purpose of this design. All of the above criteria were delivered with the design and construction of the E-Bridge. Recycling was a consideration during the design of the structure and to this end only the rock infill material was not a recycled product. Additionally the construction method employed ensures that this low cost bridge can be easily transported and reused many tomes over.
