9 Water situation Water organic pollution can be exceeding VN standards by twice the legal threshold! TCVN 5942:1995: for surface water quality Only 5 to 10% of urban domestic waste water is treated ( m 3 /day in Hanoi and m 3 /day in HCMC) Risks of contamination of the water table which cannot be reversed Source: Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, 2009

10 Solid Waste Viet Nam s solid waste production is set to almost double by 2020! Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by: Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

35 RECOMMENDATION 1: Strengthen the regulatory framework Review and strengthen existing regulations and remove regulatory barriers to GB Involve the private sector in developing appropriate legislation Cross ministry collaboration to ensure joined up thinking Build capacity at both central and municipal government level

36 RECOMMENDATION 2: Promote LOTUS Green Building rating tools Integrate GB requirements into national sustainable development policy Government to set a national target for GB construction for the period Continue to create constructive dialogue with the VGBC, its members and partners Monitor Buildings performance Development of an GB exchange platform

37 RECOMMENDATION 3: Define GB Incentives for the private sector Define and deliver an overall strategy for green building promotion in Vietnam Consult with the private sector and VGBC on appropriate incentives and policy measures for Vietnam Implement trial projects for incentives

38 RECOMMENDATION 4: Lead by example: public sector investment in GB New government buildings should implement EE and/or LOTUS certifications Monitor building performance Invest in research and development

39 RECOMMENDATION 5: Build capacity Keep on raising the general awareness Develop curricula for Universities Train government staff Work with employers to re skill the existing generation of construction actors Establish a Green financial valuation Disseminate VGBC and other tools
