NOOS EuroGOOS Annual meeting Brussels Henning Wehde NOOS Chair

NOOS objectives Co-ordinate, improve and harmonize the development of operational marine data and information services Provide analysis, forecasts and model based products describing the marine conditions of the North West Shelf area Provide high quality data and long time series required to advance scientific understanding of the NW European Shelf Seas

NOOS members in 2013 Members (19) BSH, DMI, IMR, MUMM, MetOff, Met.no, RWS, POL, KNMI, SMHI, Marine Institute, AWZ, RDANH, DCOO, SHOM,Cefas, Ifremer, ACRI, Meteo France, NOCS Associate Members (5) NERSC, NIVA, GKSS, Uni-Oldenburg, Deltares Representing: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and UK These members provided the services for NOOS also in 2013

InSitu data Continuation of the normal monitoring activities Coordination of the NOOS monitoring activities in a more effective way

NOOS wave data exchange Problem: - Not complete - Not real time - No reliable data flow Aim: Improve the exchange of observed wave data

NOOS wave data exchange

Map of Ferrybox systems in Europe in MyOcean Core sensor available on most ships relevant for validation Temperature and salinity Chl-a fluorescence (proxy for Chl-a) Turbidity (proxy for TSM) Some ships have water sampler for collection of validation samples Chl-a, apig/bpa CDOM, TSM A few ship have reflectance Can be used for SST validation, but instrumentation needed. NIVA have QA on the European Ferrrybox as part of MyO

Sensor prototypes and new technology

Franatech pco2 systems for Ferrybox installations Membrane based system Solid state detector Calibration on-board Easy to maintain/replace Flow through system Uses external pump (Ferrybox) Water leakage detector Internal logging and on-line SW Communication with Ferrybox

FT_pCO2 vs GO_pCO2 after applying a new calibration

Combined approach ph and pco2 into the Ferrybox Physically implemented into the pco2 will be tested! ph and carbonate pco2 Combined in a common labview Software with data from the Ferrybox like SST, pressure e.g.. Kai Sørensen, NIVA kai.sorensen@niva.no

Protype testing - «Chemical extractor» Chem. Mariner project Test Oslo-Kiel Polyetylene membranes and triolin Membranes brought to laboratory for analysing of PAH, PCB and some pesticider. JeriCO have extended the 3 rd TNA call deadline.

Development of automated measurements for daily use Austevoll testa

Modelling/Forecast/Hindcast/R eanalysis Continuing efforts on operational models Increasing efforts on biogeochemical modelling New initiatives/developments

MME Why? uncertain uncertainty estimates

MME How? Funding from and cooperation in MyOcean-2 project Input data from BOOS/HIROMB & NOOS community Taking various 48h-forecasts as input, interpolating them onto a common grid and producing ensemble products Variables: sea surface temperature, -salinity & -currents, volume transport at transects, sea level at tide gauge stations Statistics: ensemble min., max., mean, median and standard deviation Data for SST&SSS with daily update are available from: ftp://ftp.bsh.de/outgoing/opmodel/my_ocean/mme/
