Coastal Services : Market Perspective to the Use of EO in Delta Ecosystems Ghada El Serafy, Deltares Ghada.elserafy@deltares.nl

Introduction Coastal Services Deltares: an independent, not-for-profit, applied research institute advising governments, NGOs for safe and sustainable living in river & coastal regions worldwide 800+ employees Main offices in Delft & Utrecht (NL) Branch offices & affiliates in Asia, Middle East & Americas

Market Perspective for Coastal Information Systems Coasts are constantly under threat from human interference and climate change (coastal & Inland) and exploitation (ecosystem services) High detailed information (spatial and temporal) is needed to manage this threat and maximize the benefits Many value-added services can be tailored to specific needs, resulting in new business Earth Observation is an open source information Integrate this with the expertise embedded in operational systems Fuse it with ground base information and crowd sourcing (people science) Provide Services to deliver Added value data to monitor and manage Deltas & Ecosystems

Introduction Coastal Services Deltares software - Delft-FEWS Delft3D FEWS New Brunswick (Canada) Yuba-Feather Reservoir (USA) FEWS-Scotland National Flood Forcasting System (England & Wales) FEWS North Sea & Rivers (Netherlands) Waterboards (Netherlands) FEWS Po (Italy) Ruhrverband (Germany) FEWS-DE (BfG-Germany) FEWS Rhein (Swizerland) FEWS-Donau & FEWS-Kamp, Austria FEWS Beijing FEWS Taiwan National Weather Service NWS-RFS (USA) FEWS Ghana FEWS Pakistan FEWS Vietnam Songhkla (Thailand) SIP-FEWS-Niger FEWS Singapore FEWS Guanabara (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) ADOOS (Arabian Gulf) Sudan Salto Grande Dam (Uruguay / Argentina) FEWS Zambezi River Basin FEWS Mauritius BOM HyFS (Australia) FEWS Seqwater (Australia) 4

Introduction Coastal Services Deltares software Delft3D Deltares & Downstream Services One of Deltares core business: Develop models & tools to turn observational data into added value information EO data & the Copernicus Services provide us and our clients with Excellent data & information resources Platforms to participate in and co-develop core and downstream services

Introduction Coastal Services MoS Model-Supported Monitoring of SPM Impact assessment of large scale land reclamation on turbidity in coastal waters Integration and assimilation of EO data into sediment transport model Reconstruction of autonomous reference conditions for prolonged time More accurate trend detection of suspended matter (SPM)

Introduction Coastal Services CoBiOS Integrate satellite products and ecological models into a operational information service on algae blooms in Europe s coastal waters. Regional operational system for Algal Bloom forecasting in Europe s coastal waters Integrate ocean color remote sensing (water transparency, Chl-a) with biogeochemical models Multi-model approach: system of systems with service portal Use the model to interpolate & extrapolate the RS data

Introduction Coastal Services Aquausers Bringing in : - WQ parameters from remote sensing (CHL, TSM, SST) - CMEMS met-ocean model results, - data from buoys (EMODNET), - measurements and decisions from users together. GIS layer analyses: aggregating indicator suitability layers into thematic suitability layers 30 juni 2017 Replies from a wider group of potenitial users

Introduction Coastal Services FAST FAST is developing down-stream services for the European Earth Observation Programme Copernicus to support cost-effective, naturebased shoreline protection against flooding and erosion. Copernicus downstream service with products based on Sentinel data for spatial information on foreshore and floodplain characteristics, such as morphology, sediment characteristics and vegetation properties. Data

Introduction Coastal Services CiTCLOPS Citizens Observatory for Coast and Ocean Optical Monitoring SPM chla FU + Forel Ule Water Colour App DSS, integrating MERIS w. GIS layers - Fluorescence w. flash & cuvet

Introduction Coastal Services BASE BASE-platform Workflow Sea-level correction Vertical referencing Data-merging Validation Use cases: Mauritius Xynthia

Introduction Coastal Services Ecopotential The ECOPOTENTIAL project focuses its activities and pilot actions on a targeted set of internationally recognized protected areas (PA) in Europe, European Territories and beyond, including mountain, arid and semi-arid, and coastal and marine ecosystems. ECOPOTENTIAL addresses the entire chain of ecosystem-related services (a) developing ecosystem data services, (b) implementing model output services to distribute the results of the modelling activities (c) estimating current and future ecosystem services and benefits, combining ecosystem functions (supply) with beneficiaries needs (demand).

Introduction Coastal Services Odyssea The Odyssea project focuses its activities on setting up coastal observatories along the Mediterranean Basin incorporating in its downstream services the downscaled Copernicus services and providing to a wider user group added value products for the management of coastal and marine ecosystems. ECOPOTENTIAL addresses the entire Mediterranean Basin setting up observatories wikipidea.org (a) developing data services including forecast, (b) Establishing coastal observatories based on EO added value data. (c) Providing Service to management, sectors (aquaculture & tourism), governmental bodies

Ambitions for Coastal Information Systems Expanding the concept of provision towards Information provision in the form of value-added services can be tailored to specific needs, resulting in new market opportunities Use of dedicated downstream services to detail the information and map them to the users need and offer them Earth Observation integrated with his expertise embedded in operational systems to monitor & manage his ecosystem Downstream Coastal Information Service

Introduction Coastal Services Deltares software (coastal modeling) 30 juni 2017

Introduction Coastal Services Deltares software Delft3D Delft3D modeling suite Integrated 2D and 3D modelling of water levels, currents, waves, sediment transport, seabed changes, water quality and ecology Areas of application: coastal areas, regional seas, estuaries, rivers, lakes Recti- and curvilinear grids, also flexible mesh Open Source software 30 juni 2017
