4 The Project CRP has NZ s only major rock phosphate deposit (5m tonnes) m tonnes a year imported annually to NZ - mostly from Morocco Value of deposit is ~ $6 billion

19 Fishing impact 00 km from Chathams Not near fishing grounds NIWA says migrating rock lobster from NZ travel further north and at shallow depths - report Highly unlikely to be near potential plume areas Eel migration raised will look at that

20 Port Selection Process All-weather 0-4m deep port, berths for 50m vessels - available by Dec 04 Ocean Bay an outside chance, Waitangi not deep enough Capital cost of new port is very substantial, would need government funding

21 Benefits for Chatham Islands Nothing possible without permits Support services (rescue, monitoring, bunkering, provisioning, etc) based on Chathams if possible Local supply fertiliser on very good terms Support local causes, including scholarships Provide employment opportunities Biodiversity offsets (forestry, crops) other ideas

22 Any potential risks? Nothing nasty in the nodules or sand No chemical in on-board separation No processing on-shore Biosecurity follow protocols Phosphate if used on Chathams has minimal run-off

23 Environmental benefits Very low in cadmium cf Moroccan Lower carbon footprint through reduced transport Less run-off than superphosphate when applied directly - MPI endorsement Research contributes to public good knowledge
