2 Positive Resource Center The Position: Managing Director of Development Reports to: Location: Executive Director San Francisco, California THE ORGANIZATION Overview Positive Resource Center (PRC) is a community-based organization founded in 1987 that assists people affected by or at risk for HIV/AIDS through culturally appropriate counseling, education and advocacy. Its main programs include employment services and benefits counseling for people with HIV and/or mental health conditions. Through its services, PRC helps individuals make informed choices in order to maximize available benefits and increase employment opportunities. Its annual budget of $2.8 million is supported by federal, state, city, corporate and foundation grants as well as gifts from individual donors and community organizations. While originally founded to provide services and support to people living with HIV/AIDS, Positive Resource Center expanded its mission in 2004 to serve people at risk for HIV/AIDS, particularly those with mental health disabilities. With over 27 years of service to the Bay Area community, PRC has become an important anchor in San Francisco, serving 2,000 clients in need each year. PRC s Benefits Counseling Program offers free counseling and legal representation to women and men who have become too disabled to work as a result of their HIV disease and/or mental illness and who need assistance with securing benefits that will provide them with regular income and healthcare coverage. In response to the significant changes brought about by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), PRC recently expanded its Benefits Counseling Program to offer a new service component: the Equal Access to Healthcare Program (EAHP). EAHP provides direct benefits counseling and advocacy to clients navigating the challenges of transitioning from healthcare safety net systems such as Healthy San Francisco to the MediCal Expansion Program or Covered California under the ACA. PRC s Employment Services Program supports clients who are well enough to explore employment options. Through this program, PRC provides a full spectrum of vocational 2

3 rehabilitation and employment placement services to support disabled clients in entering or re-entering the workforce. Its services focus on the unique issues people with disabling HIV and/or mental illness face, from fear of discrimination on the job to managing stress and maintaining their health while working. Components of PRC s Employment Services Program include: Computer and Administrative Skills Development Job Readiness Placement Assistance and Retention Services THE POSITION Positive Resource Center is seeking an exceptional development professional to lead its fundraising program. The Managing Director of Development will oversee a comprehensive development program for the Center and serve as the key corporate, foundation and major gifts officer for the organization. S/he will work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement an overall fundraising strategy for the organization. The Managing Director of Development reports directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with him and the board to develop giving opportunities to individuals and institutions that help meet the funding priorities of the Center. In addition to overseeing corporate and foundation fundraising, including prospect identification and proposal development, s/he will be responsible for managing and building a strong major and planned giving program, working to secure gifts of $5,000 or more to support the Center s programs and anticipated capital campaign. The Managing Director of Development will participate as a member of the senior management team and will work with staff and volunteers to develop and implement strategic outreach activities and events as well as initiatives to attract unrestricted support for the Center. The Managing Director will have the latitude and opportunity to work independently in an evolving and changing fundraising environment that seeks a high level of initiative, creativity, collaboration and widespread public interaction. The position requires occasional evening and weekend work. Responsibilities: Manage and implement a comprehensive fundraising program for the Center, with a particular focus on building a strong major and planned giving program Oversee a robust program of securing and stewarding corporate and foundation gifts in support of Center programs and funding needs. Manage the grant proposal process including drafting/editing letters of intent and proposals, 3

4 tracking, scheduling and preparing proposal submissions, and necessary grant reports Advance the mission, vision, and short and long-term goals of the Center, working with the ED and board to develop funding priorities and related cases for support Identify, cultivate and maintain a dynamic portfolio of 75 to 100 high net worth individuals and priority corporate and foundation prospects Secure major gifts from $5,0000 to $25,000 and above Assume responsibility for and implement the Center s campaign plan, utilizing best practices in individual and institutional giving and campaign management In coordination with the ED, develop and execute an annual operating plan with both qualitative and quantitative performance goals. Perform to or exceed agreed upon metrics involved in prospect engagement and solicitation Serve as a strong advocate in the community for the Center with local leaders, community organizations, business and corporate partners, philanthropic leaders and other key constituents Serve as a leadership member of the Center team and lead fundraising strategy meetings as well as prospect pipeline discussions. Partner with the Center s board to secure gifts in support of the organization, including, cultivating and soliciting respective board members for gifts. Staff the Development Committee of the Board. Oversee direct mail campaigns to increase unrestricted support for PRC and and to improve donor acquisition Manage development associate, overseeing work plans and providing managerial guidance Manage development operations/systems, including gift acknowledgement and donor recognition, research, prospect identification and qualification, prospect pipeline, stewardship, donor database, financial reports, etc. Coordinate planning, development and execution of fundraising events including agency Gala Serve as liaison for community events that select PRC as beneficiary (e.g., Pride Brunch, Folsom Street Events) and perform tasks necessary for each event s success Manage the production and the content of development and marketing collateral materials (press packets, case statements, brochures, annual report, newsletters, etc.) Assume leadership of the organization in the absence of the Executive Director, as requested Assume other duties as assigned CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE Education: 4

5 A Bachelor s Degree is required or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the successful performance of the job duties. Experience: Significant experience working with corporations and foundations to secure support for programs and services. Excellent grantsmanship skills Proven track record of effectively cultivating and soliciting major gifts ($5,000+) from individuals and institutional donors Experience with capital campaigns, planned giving, annual giving, and special event coordination Experience with managing budgets, grants and other elements of fiscal management, including accounting/finance practices and procedures Proven experience and demonstrated ability to partner with the boards and volunteer leadership to identify and cultivate new constituencies for the organization Strong experience with public outreach and advocacy Experience reporting to public and private sector organizations and agencies Experience managing/supervising staff either as direct reports or on a project basis Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. Familiarity with and a willingness to explore strategic uses of social media to support the agency s development program Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail Strong analytical and reporting skills Strong project management skills and the ability to balance multiple projects Ability to work in a deadline driven work environment and as a collaborative member of a team, sharing proposals, reviewing the work of colleagues, etc. Ability to work evenings and some weekends as needed An interest in and understanding of social and economic justice, HIV/AIDS and mental health issues preferred COMPETENCIES / ATTRIBUTES The successful professional will have or be: A strategic thinker Proven track record of successful fundraising Command of fundraising best practices and an excellent understanding of various giving vehicles Excellent internal and external communication skills (oral and written) and presentation abilities Well-developed organizational and multi-tasking skills Ability to work collaboratively and harmoniously with other staff members Leadership, mentoring and/or supervisory skills 5
