1 About the Organization Mission Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago, a member of Advancing Justice, has a mission to empower the Asian American community through advocacy, by utilizing education, research, and coalition- building. Specifically, Advancing Justice Chicago works to empower the Asian American community by: Increasing public understanding about Asian American communities, Advocating for policies that promote social, economic, educational and political equity of the community as a whole, Encouraging active civic participation through education and advocating for equal rights, and Working in partnership with and supporting like- minded organizations and individuals to build positive interracial and inter- ethnic relations. History Advancing Justice Chicago was established in 1992 by a group of visionary Chicago community activists, academicians, and business leaders in response to the growing need to build a pan- Asian policy agenda among Chicago's diverse Asian American communities. Advancing Justice Chicago projects a united voice on the most pressing issues of concern to Asian Americans in metropolitan Chicago. Its staff and board work closely with a broad network of established community leaders and emerging activists who have bridged ethnic and cultural differences to find solutions to shared concerns. About the Position The Director of Development will provide strategic leadership in the creation and implementation of a comprehensive plan that incorporates individual, corporate and foundation solicitation, annual appeals, and special events. The Director of Development will take the lead on developing and implementation of the annual fundraising plan that engages key organizational stakeholders in activities that increase the financial resources and support to 1

2 the organization. The Director of Development will also ensures that fundraising activities are consistent with the organization s mission and Strategic Plan, and analyzes and evaluates systems and structures for tracking and reporting fundraising data. This is a full- time, exempt position. The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director. Overview of Duties Individual and Corporate Donor Cultivation and Stewardship Ensure the accuracy and integrity of donor database and strategize best uses of database to support development functions. Develop, implement and maintain an individual donor strategy including the management and cultivation of individual and major donors. Analyze, evaluate and adjust the corporate sponsor strategy to fit the corporate giving landscape. Implement 1-2 annual appeal letter campaigns. Drive and engage in the identification, research and cultivation of new relationships with individuals, businesses, and corporations to contact and solicit financial and in- kind contributions, including writing grants and proposals, direct mail appeals, corporate sponsorships, and individual giving campaigns. Develop, implement and maintain a matching gift program. Ensure an impeccable donor acknowledgement process. Grants Management Oversee and support the research, writing, and submission of grant proposals, on a timely basis, to funders as well as coordinate all follow up reports with Program Leads. Oversee the cultivation of institutional supporters by maintaining regular communication with current and potential funders and coordinating necessary site visits. Oversee the prospecting of potential local, regional and national foundations. Oversee the development, management and evaluation of development systems and processes, including, but not limited to a grants calendar. 2

3 Special Events Oversee and drive the planning and implementation of the annual Milestone Awards Benefit, Advancing Justice Chicago s major fundraising event, as well as smaller fundraising and donor cultivation events. Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of current fundraising events. Communications Create organizational marketing and promotional materials, including monthly and special- edition electronic newsletters, website content, that communicate programmatic and fundraising opportunities and accomplishments in order to increase donor investment. Utilizing best practices, and in cooperation with the Communications Coordinator, co- manage the organization's presence, including content creation, on social media platforms including Facebook page, Twitter feed and YouTube channel. Board Engagement Prepare and present quarterly reports to the Board of Directors, showing the progress and efficiency of fundraising strategies. Work with the Development Team to develop and implement an annual fundraising plan which includes short and long term strategies to solicit and secure funds. Support and advise Executive Director, the Development Team, staff and board members with implementing fundraising activities including individual giving campaigns, direct mail appeals, sponsorships, donor recognition activities, and special events. Provide guidance, support and ongoing training to develop Board fundraising skills. 3

4 Supervision Supervise the Development and Special Events Manager and all Development interns. Perform other duties as assigned to further the reputation and financial stability of Advancing Justice Chicago. Qualifications Experience in non- profit fundraising and communications with demonstrated accomplishments, including a proven track record in achieving fundraising goals and experience in developing and managing a portfolio of major donors and foundations. Demonstrated skills and experience in data collection and analysis is required. This includes experience in data mining donor lists, both for improvement of their quality, but also to gain analytical insights into organizational fundraising patterns. Experience in creating, evaluating and tracking development systems and processes that maximize efficiency of work. Well- documented and successful history of working with boards and committees. Knowledge and familiarity with Chicago philanthropic community and an ability to analyze the advocacy fundraising landscape is highly desired. BA/BS (or equivalent) in a related field required. Internet and computer savvy, with experience utilizing Word, Excel, website management and e- communications software social media platforms and donor databases. Superior responsiveness and verbal/written communication skills. Ability to clearly communicate about social justice and advocacy issues in both written and verbal forms. Supervisory and project management experience preferred. Non- profit programmatic experience highly preferred. Knowledge of NationBuilder database software and online fundraising strongly preferred. Understanding of and/or experience with racial justice work and issues affecting Asian American communities is preferred. 4

5 Independent, results- focused, highly organized self- starter. Excellence in time management and prioritization. Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to function well within a team environment, which includes cross- department coordination. Comfort with giving and receiving honest, constructive feedback. Flexibility to work occasional evening and weekend hours. Compensation is commensurate with experience in field.
