2 Page 2 WSHRMA President s Message Become a WSHRMA Member Are you interested in a SHRM membership or transferring your membership to our chapter? Please contact Michele Roberts, Membership Director with any questions: or hrpers@yahoo.com. Dear WSHRMA Members, I regret to inform you that I have resigned from my position as President of the WSHRMA Board, effective immediately. I will be spending the majority of my days in Olympia. My grandson is having medical and physical issues that will take one-on-one therapy, doctor appointments, etc. for many months. I'm thankful that I'm in a position to be able to help in this situation, but some things I will have to sacrifice. One of those things is serving on the WSHRMA board. Rachael Taylor (Past President) and Stacey Scalf (President-Elect) have graciously offered to Co- President for the year and I am truly grateful for their support and for all of yours, as well. You'll be in good hands. WSHRMA is a great organization and I hope to be able to be involved again in the future. My best to all of you! Sincerely, Joy Page
3 Page 3 By: Carolyn Nall, WSHRMA Legislative Director Legislative Update 2014 HR Day on the Hill Date: March 7, 2014, 8:00am 5:00pm Organizer: Washington State Council SHRM Location: Columbia Room, Legislative Building, State Capitol Campus th Avenue Southeast Olympia, WA Price: No Cost You will need to register at the following link to attend: Click here. We will be coordinating carpools to Olympia. If you are interested in participating in the carpool, please contact Carolyn Nall at cnall@columbiabank.com. Please indicate if you are interested in driving and how many seats you have available in your vehicle or if you are a passenger as well as your location. By: Julie Tappero, WSHRMA Treasurer Message from the Treasurer As WSHRMA s Treasurer, I am responsible for the chapter s finances. We are working hard to spend our chapter s money wisely, and to keep our luncheon fees reasonable. Did you know that we barely break-even on the luncheons? That s why it s crucial that all members and guests remember to pay for their lunches. We are required to confirm the attendance number on the Thursday before the luncheon, and from that point on, we cannot make any changes. So if someone RSVPs that they are coming, and they cancel after the deadline, or don t show up at all, our chapter still must pay for their lunch. You can help by cancelling prior to Thursday and by paying for the luncheons you RSVP for, even if you can t make it. Together, let s spend our chapter s money wisely on things that count!
4 Page 4 Planning to take the PHR or SPHR Exam? By: Cindy Juarez, WSHRMA Certification Director You can t beat a formalized study program (class, lecture, study group) to help you prepare. Many of us aren t disciplined enough and/or have too many life distractions to prepare for such a challenging exam on our own. Wouldn t it be useful to be part of an organized and structured study program? Many formalized programs are available. Check the SHRM website for additional information. As a supplement to whatever study program you may choose or are already using, we are initiating a monthly study group meeting within our local area. This is not a formal class of instruction, but it will provide you an organized and structured study environment, a routine, and a place to share and study with others. We will meet the third Thursday of each month at Jackson Park Community Center, Room 135, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Come join us on February 20th for the first study group! Denfield Thomas and Cacee Lee will share testing preparation tips, references, study aids and helpful hints. If you have any questions please contact Certification Director, Cindy Juarez, at (cell) or (work) or via at cindy.juarez@navy.mil.
