3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (4-5 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Ms. Fletcher is talking to her colleague Ms. Trench after their meeting. Ms. Fletcher: I m glad our last meeting went well. Ms. Trench: Yes, me too. But I had a with one of our colleagues about the issue and he also saw how serious the supervisor was. Ms. Fletcher: Yes, I saw that, too. Maybe he was just concerned with the action done by one of the secretaries. Ms. Trench: Well, he just wanted us not to commit the same in recording again. Ms. Fletcher: At least the supervisor was still enough in addressing her. Ms. Trench: He was just being professional. Anyway, such issues should always be resolved in a professional way. Ms. Fletcher: I agree. Problems like those will surely affect the whole company if not handled properly. Ms. Trench: That is why we should always be careful in doing our work. 4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: General Description: Topic: Subject and Verb Agreement Rules (Part 4) (5-6 minutes) 1. When a singular subject and another plural subject are joined together by the words or, nor, neither/nor, either/or, and not only/but also, the form of the verb should follow the subject nearest to it. Ex: Neither the manager nor the employees know about the new rule. 2. Indefinite pronouns (ex. each, everybody, nobody, someone, etc.) normally take singular verbs, except for the pronouns few, many, several, and both which always take plural verbs. Ex: Someone is responsible for the missing documents. 3. Two infinitives (to + verb) joined by and always take the plural form of the verb. Ex: To speak about the issue and to tell others about it are not allowed in the office. Remember: Indefinite pronouns such as all, any, more, most, some and such can take both singular and plural forms of the verb depending on what it refers to. Examples: 1 Neither the manager nor his subordinates are talking about the latest status of the company. Neither the supervisors nor the manager is informed about the changes in management. 2 Both secretaries are assigned in the recruitment division. All of the employees are required to attend the meeting. All of the newspaper was soaked in water. Remember! 3 To write memos and to submit them are her main tasks.
