Prior to joining Ericsson through acquisition, Mike led the Americas region at Nortel Networks in a similar capacity. 2 April 2016 Newsletter Plant Tour of International Grains and Cereal Review Fifteen members of the North Texas chapter were treated to a tour of the food products manufacturing facility at IGC. Attendees gathered in the Administration office area to sign in, receive a safety briefing and talk about what they wanted to learn from the tour. IGC hosts began with an overview and history of the parent company, Empresas-Polar and the evolution of P.A.N. corn flour. The basic product made at the IGC plant, P.A.N. was started in Venezuela in 1950 to produce corn flakes for beer production. As corn became a staple food in the local diet a new product was born. By the end of the 1960s there were 3 plants making corn meal in Venezuela. During the 1970s there was a significant growth in consumption of corn flour to 40.7 kilograms per person per year. In the 1990s P.A.N. flour was exported from Venezuela to the rest of the world. In the 2000s there have been several changes in packaging and launching of more products, including a P.A.N. sweet corn mix. By 2014 P.A.N. products are being shipped to more than 25 countries After the overview the attendees divided into 2 smaller groups for a walking tour of the facility. Four hosts from IGC staff escorted the groups for a tour of the 500,000ft facility. The tour groups proceeded to the south end of the facility at the corn receiving building. Here they observed the grated floor openings where the corn is off loaded from Hopper trailer trucks and then transferred to 3 concrete silos. The tour groups walked inside and underneath the silos. They observed their massive size, cleanliness and giant corn transfer equipment that moves the corn kernels to the storage silos. The groups observed the purchased materials bulk storage area on the way to the Quality lab. The Quality Lab Manager showed the many pieces of equipment used to test corn and product quality during the stages of production. The groups toured the 2nd floor Production Control office where all the manufacturing equipment are computer controlled by the shift production crews. During the corn meal product cycle the shift production crews take many samples and test the product to ensure the quality. Tour groups viewed the Production Packaging area where 4 different Packaging machines receive the White and Yellow corn meal products. This equipment packages the corn products into various finished products based on size and the type of product. 3 April 2016 Newsletter Retail customers include local grocery stores and wholesale bulk package warehouse stores. The tours ended with a walk-through of the finished products warehouse. In the warehouse customer orders are staged for shipment as well as receipt of purchased products for internal plant customers. After the tour everyone arrived at the company cafeteria where they enjoyed corn Arepas, a flat round patty stuffed with meat and cheese, and cold drinks. While the attendees enjoyed their food t he tour hosts a n s w e r e d questions and everyone viewed the video of the Empresas-Polar story. The University of Texas at Dallas is seeking projects sponsored by local industries to share their needs with Masters Students analyzing a problem in Supply Chain Management, or related area. This Capstone course allows students to solve real-world challenging problems in a process improvement project for course credit. Students are organized into teams of 4 or 5, matching their interests and skills to the requirements of the project. Students interview company representatives to better understand their current issues and opportunities, collect data to be analyzed, develop as-is process maps, opportunity roadmaps, and present their findings and recommendations to the companies at the conclusion of the semester. Students are supervised, and have access to tenured professors for guidance and suggestions. There is no fee to the company sponsors for the project. 8 February 2016 Newsletter The Changing of the Guard Howard B Hamilton, Ph.D., CPIM Chair, Chapter Nominating Committee Parliamentarian, Historian Every June our chapter elects new officers: President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice Presidents of Education, Operations, Marketing, and Membership. The vice presidents select board members to serve on their functional teams: Education, Operations, Marketing, and Membership. (Maybe select is not the operative word; entice, cajole, coerce, etc., may better describe the process of selecting team members.) With eight elected officers and four or so members per team, your board of directors numbers over twenty chapter leaders. If you have considered serving your chapter as a board member, please me or one of the Nominating Committee members (listed below) to inquire about the positions available and what the responsibilities are. Like the Marines, we are always looking for a few good people. Since our membership is a little over five hundred, two percent participation would provide the leadership we need to maintain an effective chapter. We have several student members on this year s board of directors. The time commitment is about eight to ten hours per month. The chapter asks for a two year commitment from new board members, but that is not mandatory. If board members can commit to three years, then only one-third of the board would be new each year. We could develop continuity and have the opportunity to do some succession planning. What are the advantages (and perks) of serving on the board of directors? First, you get to develop relationships with fellow APICS members from various manufacturing and service companies in the D/FW area. Board members attend Professional Development Meetings at a reduced rate. The monthly board meeting (third Thursday) includes a catered meal. The chapter also permits board members to attend some chapter training courses for reduced prices. Another reward is the two-day Leadership Training Seminars or Workshops presented several times a year by District staff and District Chapter members at locations throughout the USA (and this year, a joint District meeting in Canada.) Over the past twenty years of service on the board, I have attended workshops in Austin, Estes Park, a joint workshop in Nashville with chapter members from three other APICS districts, and twice in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. My former employer provided the time to attend these workshops, with much of the travel and hotel expenses paid by our chapter. And the crown jewel, the annual APICS International Conference and Exhibition provides three or four outstanding keynote speakers and a plethora of seminars and workshops for three days, as well as exhibits from dozens of supply chain management software and related companies. My former employer sponsored my travel to International Conferences in San Diego, New Orleans (twice), Nashville, and Washington DC. So, I never asked my employer to pay my membership dues. Many employers are more than willing to provide the opportunity for their employees to obtain leadership training and exposure to the latest ideas, models, and applications of Supply Chain Planning and Management, as well as the software to support Resource Management Systems. Your involvement with APICS provides added indication of your dedication to maintaining and enhancing your skills and knowledge in Operations Management. Now is the time to volunteer. During the months of July or August, the board members hold strategic planning meetings. The outgoing board members assist the incoming (and returning) members develop plans for the coming years. Several times we have spent a day or two at Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma, developing our chapter s strategic plans. We are currently looking for a treasurer, a Programs director to help coordinate program speakers, a Plant Tours director, some Education directors to coordinate our education programs, and some Membership directors to help coordinate our Membership programs.
