Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS TC 59, Construction standards, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was published in May This document supersedes SANS 1449:2008 (edition 2.1). A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 2. This document is a combination of SANS 22:1975, Glazed ceramic wall tiles and fittings and SANS 1449:1989, Ceramic wall and floor tiles, and supersedes them both. In the light of the worldwide trend of having a single document (with one generic title, but consisting of various parts) for ceramic wall and floor tiles, as manifested by CEN and ISO, the South African technical committee responsible decided to follow suit (except that this standard consists of only one part). ISO is still in the process of preparing some of the parts of ISO 10545, Ceramic tiles, and a decision will have to be taken at some future stage about aligning the South African document with ISO SANS 10107:1969, The design and installation of ceramic tiling, is being revised at present to cover both wall and floor tiles. Once it has been completed, the informative notes on the fixing and maintenance of tiles contained in annex C of this standard may be deleted. Annex A forms an integral part of this document. Annexes B to F are for information only.

5 Ceramic wall and floor tiles 1 Scope 1.1 This standard specifies the requirements for glazed and unglazed ceramic wall and floor tiles. 1.2 The standard does not cover unglazed dust-pressed tiles that have a water absorption exceeding 10 %. 2 Normative reference The following standard contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard.
