5 Cast iron surface boxes and manhole and inspection covers and frames 1 Scope 1.1 This specification covers the material, dimensional, mass, constructional, and strength requirements for a) fifteen types of cast iron manhole covers and frames, Amdt 1 b) eleven types of cast iron surface boxes (with covers) for meters, valves, stopcocks, and hydrants, and c) two types of cast iron inspection covers and frames. Amdt 3 NOTE a) The standards referred to in the specification are listed in appendix A. b) Requirements that must be specified by the purchaser are listed in appendix B. c) A drawing of a mild steel key used for opening and lifting covers is given in appendix C. 2 Definitions 2.1 For the purposes of this specification the following definitions shall apply: acceptable acceptable to the authority administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevant Amdt 4; amdt 5 defective surface box, a manhole cover and frame, or an inspection cover and frame, that fails in one or more respects to comply with the appropriate requirements of the specification duty class heavy duty class H for use in carriageways and capable of bearing wheel loads of up to 12 metric tons medium duty class M for use where heavy commercial vehicles have no access (e.g. domestic accesses, pavements, cycle tracks) 3
