1 KENYA AGRICULTURAL & LIVESTOCK RESEARCH ORGANIZATION SUGAR RESEARCH INSTITUTE SRI/HR/ADVERTS/ th March 2015 ISO 9001:2008 Certified Institution INTERNSHIP VACANCIES The Sugar Research Institute (SRI) is an Institute under the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The Institute s headquarters is situated at Kibos, Kisumu County. SRI is mandated to develop and disseminate appropriate technologies for enhanced productivity, value addition and competitiveness of the Kenyan sugar sub-sector. The Institute wishes to engage fresh graduates as interns for the following positions for a period of twelve (12) months.

2 Assistant Research Scientist II- Environmental Science Ref: AE/Intern ARS/1/15 The successful candidate will be deployed to the Agricultural Engineering department at SRI Headquarters, Kibos in Kisumu County. He/She will report to the Head of Agricultural Engineering. The intern will assist Researchers in the following areas; Development of appropriate pollution reduction measures Exploring approaches to saving energy and reducing waste. Design and evaluation of erosion control systems Identification of systems and processes for management and utilization of wastes Design and management of water pollution control systems. Conduct inspection, evaluation, and reporting for statutory compliance Air quality monitoring, emission measurement and modeling, air pollution mitigation and control, and air dispersion modeling Research, testing, and analysis of data in order to pinpoint areas of environmental concern and recommend solutions. Development and promotion of eco-friendly strategies and practices. Participate in multi-disciplinary research teams Preparation of sectional budget, work plans and reports Any other duties as assigned by mentor to support his/her learning. A Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree in Environmental Science Be a team player

3 Assistant Research Scientist II- Plant breeding and Biotechnology -Ref: CD/Intern ARS/1/15 The successful candidate will be deployed at SRI Headquarters, Kibos in Kisumu county. He/She will report to the Head of Crop Development. The intern will assist in the following areas; Implementation and management of research projects/activities. Trial establishment and management Collection, synthesis and analysis of data Compilation and submission of project reports Any other duties as assigned to support the department s operations and the Intern s learning experience. A Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology or BSc. in Agriculture & Biotechnology. Be a team player Knowledge of tissue culture is an added advantage

4 Research Assistant II- Plant breeding -Ref:CD/Intern 2/RA/15 The successful candidate will be deployed to the Sugarcane breeding Centre, Mtwapa in Kilifi County. He/She will report to the Officer in charge of the centre. The intern will assist in the following areas; Trial establishment and management Collection,synthesis and analysis of data Compilation and submission of various centre reports Any other duties as assigned to support the centres operations and the interns learning experience. A Diploma in Agriculture or Diploma in Agriculture & Biotechnology Be a Team Player
