1 Green Infrastructure Case Study Template The aim f the exercise is t prvide infrmatin n hw the elements f the Green Infrastructure Strategy are implemented at natinal level and t prvide case studies n Green Infrastructure prjects. The case studies will be demnstrated in a brchure, which will prvide decisin-makers, spatial planners, NGOs and ther stakehlders with infrmatin n Green Infrastructure prjects develpment and implementatin. Detailed descriptin f the case a. Type f Green Infrastructure (GI) element (see list here): Green urban and peri-urban areas b. Actins carried ut t designate, cnstruct, manage and maintain the Green Infrastructure element: Łódź, thanks t its lcatin n the brder between the basins f the Vistula and the Oder, was riginally an area very rich in water. Eighteen rivers begin here, mst f which, as a result f rapid develpment f industry in the nineteenth century, has been channelized and integrated int the sewage system. In rder t meet the numerus challenges, Łódź has taken a number f actins aiming t develp and implement slutins in the field f urban echydrlgy, within the framewrk f the Eurpean Prject, SWITCH. The prject was undertaken by the Department f Applied Eclgy University f Ldz and the Eurpean Reginal Centre fr Echydrlgy under the auspices f UNESCO Sciences. The cperatin with the City f Łódź, a key partner in the prject, enabled the testing and implementatin f innvative slutins in practice. The prject was designed t develp the knwledge base in rder t develp a cmplete, innvative develpment plan f river valleys and water management in the city, having echydrlgy as its

2 integral cmpnent. The prject included 25 cuntries frm all ver the wrld, and ód was ne f nine demnstratin cities, alike Accra, Alexandria, Bel Hriznte, Birmingham, Hamburg, Beijing, Tel Aviv and Zaragza. The aim f the wrk undertaken in the prject was t harmnize the functins f urban rivers (retentin f strm water treatment, recreatin area) with echydrlgic nes, designed t restre the valley f the ptential fr self-regulatin. This included the recnstructin f cascade reservirs, which hydrdynamics and vegetatin cver has been designed t increase ecsystem resilience t the input f pllutants frm urban catchments. The use f plants further reduces pllutin by increasing their sedimentatin and assimilatin. Wrk n the mdificatin f strm sewage settling int a multi- Sequential System Sediment - Bifiltratin was cmpleted in Anther step was the rehabilitatin prtin f the river valley, includin restratin f the river meanders trugh and restratin f wetlands. Such activities have lead t imprvements in hydraulic cmmunicatin between the river and the valley, imprved the micrclimate and better develpment f vegetatin. This area is planned t be a Sklówka Valley Park, which nt nly wuld be a recreatin area fr lcal settlements, but als enters int the system f rivers and green areas in Łódź. In 2006, a platfrm f stakehlders: Learning Alliance (LA) was established, with the aim f sharing experiences and knwledge. It was als a frum fr discussin, ften cnflicting gals, needs and expectatins f individual institutins, as well as barriers t their achievement. Initially, members f the LA were representatives f entities directly related t the water sectr. But already during the first wrkshp identified a number f ther institutins whse participatin has prved necessary t btain a cmplete picture f the challenges and pprtunities and create better cperatin in the water sectr. Sn, the grup has grwn t mre than 60 partners, representing mre than 25 units f areas: science, public administratin, NGOs, practitiners in the water sectr and related media representatives and thers. Regular meetings and cntacts between participants in the LA grup led in January 2008 t the wrkshp, during which, based n the results f a jint, tw years lnger wrk, frmulated a visin fr Ldz in 2038: " Łódź Smart Uses f Water". Visin building wrkshp was a turning pint f plicy makers, wh have declared their cmmitment t a cnsistent plicy f water management and the willingness t participate in the develpment f scenaris and strategic ptins fr the realizatin f the visin. The result f these actins was als t frmulate shrt-term actin plan, which included, inter alia, t prmte cperatin between science and administratin, develping demnstratin prjects t prmte the echydrlgical slutins and taking actin twards their effective implementatin. Develpment f river Sklówka is an inspiratin fr similar activities in ther Łódź rivers and the creatin f the cncept Blue - Green Netwrk, dne by Learning Alliance grup. It is a prject cmbining and expanding existing studies n natural elements and green architectural elements f Łódź and the Łódź regin. Created netwrk is t cntribute t maintaining the cntinuity f eclgical prcesses and supprt ecsystem gds and services fr the city. This idea became the basis fr ne f the three pillars adpted by the Cuncil f the City f Łódź in 2012, the Strategy fr Integrated Develpment f Łódź in Resurce management f the city is based n efficient, integrated system that prvides universal access t infrmatin. Investrs and authrities respect the eclgical use f land and water. Infrastructure meet the functins and requirements fr safe cities, is reliable, meets the needs f all residents and prvides gd eclgical status f waters. 3 devted t recreatin and create a green lung Łódź and attractive cnditins fr the develpment f the city. The use f envirnmental bitechnlgy and deep general envirnmental awareness f inhabitants exceptinal quality f life in the city.
