2 2 Imprtance & Objectives Oil and gas are still cntributing t mre than half f wrld energy demand and accrding t IEA (Internatinal Energy Agency) the glbal demand n liquid petrleum will increase t abut 100 millin bbl/day in the next 20 years especially cnsidering insecurity with the nuclear energy and the csts invlved with renewable energy. The present resurces fr cnventinal ils are limited. Heavy and uncnventinal ils resurces are ptential energy resurces fr the cming decades. The current wrld prved reserves are mre than 3 trillin barrels in which abut 20% f these reserves are in the Middle East. Heavy ils cntain significant amunts f asphaltene, wax, and heteratms (such as sulfur and metals). Presence f such cmpunds in heavy ils presents significant challenges in bth prductin and prcessing f the il. In this wrkshp, methds f characterizatin f heavy ils with sme cmmnly used thermdynamic mdels are discussed with their applicatins in bth prductin and prcessing. We als present the methds f cntrlling slid depsitin thrugh changes in the cmpsitin r the perating cnditins. Methds f heavy il recveries, specially use f thermal methds and gas injectin will be reviewed including latest technlgy in the field. Finally, methds f prcessing f heavy il and heavy residues, cracking units, and sulfur remval as well as new develpments in mdern refineries will be presented t the participants.

6 Abut the Speaker 6 Dr. M. R. Riazi is currently a prfessr and the chairman f chemical engineering at Kuwait University. He received his MSc and PhD degrees frm Pennsylvania State University where he served as an assistant prfessr f chemical engineering. He was als a visiting schlar/faculty in bth Chemical and Petrleum Engineering Departments at Illinis (Chicag), Texas (Austin), McGill (Mntreal), Waterl (Canada), Wright State (Ohi), Nrwegian University f Science and Technlgy (Trndheim), and varius universities in the Middle East. He has abut 140 publicatins including 5 bks and a slutins manual as well as abut 100 cnference presentatins mainly in the fields f petrleum and chemical technlgy. His new bk titled Explratin and Prductin f Petrleum and Natural Gases will be published in the United States later this year. He has been invited speaker and cnsultant t mre than 50 majr il cmpanies and research centers wrldwide and has cnducted abut 70 wrkshps and shrt curses in mre than 40 different cuntries. He is the funding editr and editr in chief f IJOGCT (Lndn, UK) and an editr f Jurnal f Petrleum Science and Engineering (Elsevier). He has been awarded distinguished researcher and teaching awards at several universities including an award frm the frmer Amir f Kuwait.
