50Hertz Facts and figures 2011 As of May 2012
50 Hertz connects The European power grid works at a frequency of 50 Hz. This is the frequency at which the electricity system is stable and reliable. The task of a transmission system operator is to keep the frequency at 50 Hz at all times, power generation and consumption are then in perfect balance. This is essential to ensure a maximum of security of supply for all residential and industrial consumers. 50Hertz secures this necessary balance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. With almost 700 employees, 50Hertz Transmission ensures the operation, maintenance, planning and extension of the 220 kv and 380 kv transmission system in the German Federal States of Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. All outputs from renewable sources are integrated and transported to consumers in the control area of 50Hertz. Special focus is placed on creating the requisite infrastructure. 49,9 50,0 Hz 50,1 Consumer Producer

Regional centres The company is based in Berlin with the head office in Berlin- Treptow. The System Control function with its centrepiece, the Transmission Control Centre ( TCC ), and the Front Office are situated at the location Berlin Eastside in Neuenhagen near Berlin. It is here that energy flow through the networks is monitored and managed to constantly maintain the balance between power generation and consumption. This is how the legal obligation of system operator 50Hertz to guarantee system security is put into practice. Maintenance, repair and development of the transmission system as well as of the 65 substations and switching stations are ensured by 270 employees working in six regional centres. 5 Legal parameters Responsibility for society Non-discriminating grid connection, grid access and grid operation Secure, reliable and competitive operation of an effective grid Optimisation, enhancement and appropriate development of the grid Balancing of production and consumption Ensuring system stability and emergency procedures, also under difficult conditions Integration of renewables, connection of offshore generation capacity to the system Priority take-off, compensation and commercialisation of electricity from renewable sources and CHP generation Europe-wide cooperation Important laws for transmission system operators 3rd Energy Package of the European Union Energy Industry Act ( EnWG ) Electricity Network Development Act ( EnLAG ) Renewable Energy Sources ( EEG ) Act on the Preservation, Modernisation and Development of Combined Heat and Power Production ( KWK-G ) Incentive Regulation Ordinance ( ARegV ) Grid Expansion Acceleration Act ( NABEG ) Electricity Grid Charges Ordinance ( StromNEV )
EEG (Renewable Energy Sources Act) surcharge developments As of 1 January 2010, electricity utility companies are required to pay an EEG surcharge* to the transmission network operators for kilowatt hours of electricity provided to end users (end consumers). The calculation of the EEG surcharge for the implementation of the EEG is based on the difference between the income and the expenditure of the transmission network operators; it is calculated using fore casts by independent analysts and in agreement with the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA). 50Hertz and other German transmission network operators publish the nationwide standardised level of the EEG surcharge by 15 October of each calendar year. billion ** 2012** Costs (in billion) EEG levy per kwh (in ct/kwh) ** the EEG levy corresponds to the difference between total expenditure and forecast sales revenue in accordance with the equalisation scheme ** Forecast figures for total subsidy Sources: 50Hertz (2010), eeg-kwk.net (2011, 2012) ct/kwh
50 Hertz into the future The enterprise s aspiration is to keep 50 Hz, the pulse of European power supply, constant, together with our domestic and foreign partners, in order to promote the development of the European electricity market, to integrate renewables into the transmission grid and to upgrade the grid to meet these needs. The 50Hertz experts, in close cooperation with regional partners, guarantee a responsible approach when using assets provided by nature : Nesting aids on overhead line towers, for example for ospreys, falcons and jackdaws Ecologically-minded construction and maintenance of overhead lines Numerous compensatory activities and renaturation schemes Complete acceptance of renewables Network development for climate protection
