1 DEBENHAM HIGH SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION NETWORK MANAGER (NEW POST) Terms Hours Salary Line Manager 52 weeks per year, 37 hours per week (negotiable).4 weeks annual leave, rising to 5 weeks after 5 years service, to be taken in school holidays am 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30 to 4.00 on Friday (negotiable) including 30 minutes unpaid lunch break every day. APT&C Grade 4 above bar, starting at 20,652 and rising by four annual increments awarded on performance review to 23,473 plus cost of living increase. Deputy Head Job Purpose To be responsible for the management of the school ICT network and communications system, ensuring efficient operation according to agreed procedures. To lead a small team of technicians, providing advice and guidance as necessary. To undertake any other reasonable duty which the Head may from time to time require. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1 Network Manager Provide strategic guidance to the Senior Leadership Team, Governors and staff in ICT for the school. Provide technical support for the RM ICT network and stand-alone units across the school. Maintain the efficient data flow, integrity and security of the system. Oversee the regular back-up of data on network servers. Maintain the school s broadband link including liaison with the service provider. Ensure the installation of software, and that software licences are obtained, recorded and kept up to date. Maintain the SIMS admin and finance network. Provide support and advice for the school website as required. Management of communication systems including telephone systems. Ensure staff laptops are properly maintained. Prioritise staff requests for technical support via a computer fault recording system. Ensure the development of the school s ICT service; contribute to the submission of bids for government funding and liaison with other schools. Attend any training sessions appropriate to the management of the school network infrastructure. 20/05/2009

2 2 Technical Support to Teaching Staff To support the curriculum by ensuring that data retrieval can take place. To assist staff and students to overcome problems with the use of computer software, including demonstrating the use of equipment as required. To provide training for the school community as required. To gather and provide information to staff on the range of equipment and software available for school use to ensure the effective and efficient day to day operation of the computer system. To provide technical support to departments using multimedia computer systems. To assist teachers in ensuring safe practices in teaching areas. Liaise with faculties, teaching and support staff within the school; other schools, establishments and agencies and appropriate LA personnel. Provide cover for after school computer use. 3 Service and Maintenance Fault finding and replacing of components as necessary including maintaining a service log for each computer and peripheral. Liaise with contractors and suppliers to resolve any technical problems as they arise. Ensure that maintenance and first line repairs to equipment is carried out and report the need for further repairs or replacement through the established procedures. Be on call during the day to deal with technical problems. Ensure that all equipment is security marked and securely kept in a designated place and that all established and appropriate security measures are observed. Maintain an inventory of equipment. Implement a security system for booking out and return of all borrowed IT equipment. Ensure that Health and Safety standards relating to ICT are maintained and adhered to throughout the school. This includes producing and updating relevant procedures. Ensure that all possible measures are taken to prevent pupils accessing inappropriate internet sites or facilities. Assist in maintaining and updating the school s Acceptable Use Policy. 4 Supplies and Stock Maintain materials and stock and re-order as necessary/requested (orders must be approved by the Deputy Head and Bursar). Check in deliveries and resolve any queries with suppliers or teaching staff as appropriate. 5 Preparation of Rooms Ensure that materials, apparatus and equipment are available for pupil use, as required to teacher specification and that all ICT rooms are cleared and equipment checked for malfunctions on a daily basis through established procedures.

3 6 Supervision Undertake the day-to-day management of ICT Technicians, including the establishment of work programmes, setting work priorities and resolving problems as required. Monitor work performance, identify staff training needs, evaluate the effectiveness of training and keep accurate records. Carry out induction and performance reviews. 7 Decisions The post holder will be expected to work alone and have the ability to work flexibly and calmly under pressure and make decisions in: recommending purchases of materials, stock, equipment/machinery, spares and renewal of unserviceable items; deciding what materials can be re-used; assessing when machines need resetting or re-servicing. This job description sets out the major duties and responsibilities associated with the post of Network Manager. Any duties and responsibilities of a similar level or nature are not excluded because they are not itemised. The duties of the post could vary from time to time as a result of new legislation, changes in technology or policy changes and in that case appropriate training may be given to enable the post-holder to undertake this new varied work. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Criteria Knowledge: Essential to basic Required for fully competent Technical or specialist Developed understanding and knowledge of the full range of ICT equipment and networking available. A high level knowledge of software and hardware, e.g. Microsoft office, networking software, modems, Internet etc. At least 3 years experience of working in an ICT networking environment. Specialist knowledge of RM CC3 network and SIMS. Ability to manage a small team Experience of managing projects Awareness of current ICT issues and trends. Knowledge and understanding of the Data Protection Act and other related legislation. Literacy and numeracy High level of literacy and numeracy required in order to read, understand and interpret legislation, government funding bids, technical specifications, write reports, produce costings etc. Knowledge & use of equipment High level of knowledge of a range of ICT equipment. High level of knowledge of networking systems, e.g. cabling and connections. Any other (incl. Political) An awareness and understanding of government initiatives in relation to ICT. Mental Skills: Research Researching and evaluating new software and hardware and making purchasing decisions. Collating information for inclusion in and production of reports, including those for external sources. Problem solving Ability to identify and resolve a full range of complex and technical problems, including hardware/software failures/faults, budgetary issues, deadlines, personnel etc. Responsible for the management of specific projects and making related decisions and overcoming problems as they arise.

Attend and offer technical advice, guidance and expertise on ICT within the school at meetings. Carry out induction and ongoing training of ICT Technicians. Advising / guiding skills Provide technical advice to Headteacher, teaching staff, contractors, ICT Technicians, pupils, Governors on broad range of ICT issues. Personal skills Sensitive to pupils needs; ability to communicate well with teenagers. Adaptable and flexible Able to work calmly under pressure Negotiating, influencing or conciliating skills Negotiation with suppliers on price of software licences/equipment/cabling etc. Negotiate with and influence Governors/Headteacher as to school s ICT requirements and budgetary needs. Verbal and written communications skills (including use of languages) Ability to communicate technical and specialist information to Headteacher, pupils, staff, Governors etc.

Required for fully competent Ability to write reports for Governors and external sources and produce costings, e.g. for projects. Physical skills: Keyboard skills / use of mouse Ability to use keyboard and mouse accurately. Other manual skills Manual handling skills are required for the safe lifting and handling of equipment. Ability to use hand tools, e.g. screwdrivers. Other attributes: Level of autonomy Ability to plan, manage and prioritise own workload and that of team with very minimal supervision. Plan and initiate projects and oversee their implementation.
