The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The AM holds more than 18 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite. The AM s purpose is to make nature, Indigenous cultures & science accessible and relevant to everyone. The Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI) Division is comprised of the following five Branches: Education, Life Science, Digital Collections and Citizen Science, Lizard Island Research Station and Australian Centre for Wildlife Genomics. For more information, visit the following sites: Australian Museum Research Institute Australian Museum Science Research Strategy Primary purpose of the role The Geoscience Technical Officer will work to increase the impact of science at the Australian Museum by undertaking technical work supporting the Mineralogy Collection Manager in implementing an innovative collection-based research infrastructure program. Key accountabilities Support the development and implementation of the collection program, building on the Australian Museum Science Strategy, and assist in communication of this work. 1

2 Support the conception, planning and implementation of proposals to strategically develop the Museum's collections research infrastructure. Support the development, management and use of the Australian Museum's collection research infrastructure. Support the geoscience team in identifying a range of common minerals with minimal assistance and testing. Assist the collection manager and/or research scientist in the supervision of volunteers and interns Key challenges Under direction from the Collection Manager, prioritise competing demands from a diversity of internal and external stakeholders for research program support and research infrastructure access, exhibitions, visits, loans, donations and accessions with maintaining the integrity of the collection, its value and necessary collection management activities. Clearly communicating complex scientific and strategic information to varied audiences. Key relationships Who Internal Branch Manager, Life and GeoSciences Why Escalate issues, keep informed, advise and receive instructions. Manage and provide regular updates on key administrative and operational projects, issues and priorities. Respond to requests for input on key issues Group Manager (Manager) Negotiate overall direction on priorities in consultation with the Collection Manager, Minerology. Respond to requests for management, research and budget information Collection Manager Act under direction on collection and research project activities Director, AMRI, and Executive Director, Australian Museum Provide expert advice, assistance and support Museum Staff (Agency Staff) Provide services that support organisational objectives External Government departments, Research Organisations and Companies Assist the Collection Manager, Minerology with requests for access to the Australian Museum collections or information. Role dimensions Decision making The position holder is responsible for undertaking technical activities in support of the Collections Manager, Minerology in consultation with the Group Manager and the Branch Manager, Life and Geosciences. Direct reports The position holder is responsible for managing the staff within the work area, notably volunteers and visiting researchers Budget/Expenditure N/A Essential requirements BSc or BSc (Hons) preferred, TAFE qualifications, or equivalent research experience with a strong background relevant to the Museum s research priorities: Demonstrated capacity to assist in the maintenance of geoscience collections, including curation and databasing. Knowledge and understanding of the application of Work Health and Safety (WH&S) legislation and regulations Adequate knowledge and experience in order to deliver the Key Accountabilities and perform to the Focus Capabilities outlined in this Role Description.
