POSITION: INCUMBENT: REPORTS TO: LOCATION: Container Terminal Manager (CTM) Port Logistics Manager (PLM) Port Nelson Limited ( PNL ) SECTION B POSITION OBJECTIVE: Overall management of all PNL s container operations. To provide a seamless container terminal operation focusing on the safe and cost efficient movement of containers and maximising profitability of the operation. SHIPSIDE TEAM (a) Planning Supervisor Systems Co-ordinator Ship planners Gate R&D staff appropriate functions (b) Container Ops supervisor 3 x container ship operational supervisors LHM crane driver team Leading Hand & Hatchmen team SECTION C KEY TASKS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES Key Accountabilities Container Operations Task All container operations from receiving of bookings, managing the MT Depot, planning the container yard, shipboard operations, cargo gate in/gate out and all other container-related activities, including customs, MPI, environmental matters, and financial performance of container operations. Cargo Operations: Ensure that cargo movements are planned and tracked, and be involved in and promote the development of cargo tracking software, for customer reporting, invoicing, cargo statistics, and marketing. Manage the allocation of cargo storage areas in the Container Yard. Arrange and supervise labour and mobile plant to conduct container operations in way of R&D, Empty Container Yard and Marshalling. Develop and maintain procedures and systems for handling of refrigerated cargo in the port. Ensure that all hoist drivers are fully proficient and professional communicators with the R&D office and ship s supervisory staff, as required. Review work methods and procedures, and evaluate changes/improvements with a focus on safety of operations and standard of service to customers. Overview, in conjunction with the PLM, the coordination of cargo movement through the port involving shipping agents, key customers and freight companies whilst promoting the development of direct and positive relationships between this group and the R&D and Logistics teams and Stevedoring. Ensure equipment and plant under own jurisdiction is maintained in a safe working condition and operated safely at all times. Ensure proper & thorough pre-planning of all container operations. Responsible for safe, efficient, cost-effective stevedoring operations of containerised cargo. Financial performance Manage financial performance of all container-related activities to ensure the financial objectives are achieved (including budgeting, quoting, and ship by ship, monthly and annual financial performance)

3 Safety performance To be a champion of workplace health and safety by commitment through action and support of the workplace Health & Safety Management Plan. Encourage total employee consultation, participating and involvement for effective H&S programs. Chair the Container Operations H&S committee. Promote safety and encourage open communication with employees in the resolution of safety concerns. Ensure that safe systems of work are developed and maintained Responsible for incident investigation. Introduce effective follow up, promote and implement any remedial action plans and or prevention plans Ensure adequate emergency response procedures are documented and effective and all personnel adequately trained. Apply, promote and support the Company s Drug and Alcohol Programme Environmental Be a champion of environmental standards, policies & practices. Environmental continuous improvement. Leadership Be an active member of the Leadership Team and contribute to the direction of PNL. Be recognised as a strong leader and build strong relationships with own teams and across the Company. Have high visibility as a leader. Ensure your teams are trained and competent to do the job they are doing. Resource teams adequately. Provide rewards and recognition to ensure a highly engaged and motivated teams. Manage the overall performance of direct reports and ensure that they are managing their teams with performance reviews and regular coaching. Manage promptly any conflict or issues that arise within the teams. ICT Be a champion of IT initiatives and look for opportunities to utilise IT to drive performance and enhance customer satisfaction. Promote and introduce live operations to the container terminal, as systems and IT support permits. Supervise the operation of JMT system within Cargo Reception including resolving system faults via Jade User Group. Productivity & J2E Chair the J2E Containers sub-committee and strive for everimproving performance at all levels, including productivity, without compromising safety. Customer relations Build & maintain strong relationships with all key clients & customers. Develop and maintain strong relationships with all other PNL depts. Work closely with all 3 rd parties (eg Clients, MPI, Customs, SCS, Tasman Refrigeration etc) and internal divisions (eg QuayPack, Marine, Workshop & Security). Build a team approach to customer servicing throughout R&D office and promote the team to take ownership of this approach. Maintain customer contact while promoting the team to handle enquiries from all customers and potential customers such as

4 shipping agents, shippers and shipping companies re cargo movements and cargo location over their operations on a day to day basis in a positive and proactive manner. New Business Actively seek & develop new business opportunities in area of responsibility. Other Provide PLM with monthly reports on each direct-call Shipping Line s KPI s e.g. performance, incidents, H&S, J2E, productivity, financial, volumes, training carried out etc. Develop and implement approved policies & procedures. Co-ordinate quality assurance function to ensure the development, implementation and audit of a quality audit programme. Contribute to, and be proactive with, the justification and development needs including facilities, plant, IT systems and staffing. Customs co-ordinate the implementation of new Customs initiatives appropriate to your area including bonded containers, tranships and CEDO (gatehouse). Hours As the Manager of the department your role will be Monday to Friday during the hours 0730 to 1630 and any additional hours required to meet operational needs. The stevedoring of container vessels is a 24/7 operation and there is an expectation that you will have visibility on vessels weekly outside of normal hours to support the Container Operational Supervisor. PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications: Experience: Proven management and leadership essential. A strong leader that likes to be highly visible and leads from the front. An extensive background in logistics will be essential. A comprehensive knowledge of port-related cargo and container facilities and operations including stevedoring of cargo. Strong customer relationship skills with the ability to develop working relationships with all key customers. Ability to problem solve and use initiative. Work under pressure and to multi-task. Knowledge of MAF standard/regulations and Custom regulations. Desirable is an understanding of: yard stock control, Jade systems. Personal Attributes: Sound planning skills with the ability to manage a logistics operation. Outstanding interpersonal skills that enables you to relate to a wide range of people and build strong relationships. An ability to manage well under pressure/stress. BEHAVIOURS ASPIRE
