7 HOW PROBIOTICS EFFECT CROP PRODUCTION biprag seed cnsists f Purple Nn-Sulphur Bacteria (PNSB). These species are cmmn inhabitants f healthy sils. PNSB PNSB are able t fix nitrgen when supplied rganic matter in the frm f crp residues r ther liquid carbn surces thereby reducing nitrgen fertilizer requirements. PNSB secrete varius biactive nucleic acids, amin acids and vitamins such as ribflavin, uracil, prline, methinine and 5-aminlevulenic acid (5-ALA). 5-ALA is a chlrphyll and vitamin B 12 precursr whilst ribflavin is a precursr f lumichrme. Tgether these biactive substances are respnsible fr many f the effects f PNSB n crps. The rts f plants directly absrb these biactive mlecules. PNSB imprves the chlrphyll cntent, phtsynthetic rate and stmatal cnductivity f crps. PNSB imprves seed germinatin, seedling grwth, crp yield and quality. PNSB stimulate rhizbium and ther free-living nitrgen-fixing bacteria thrugh the prductin f vitamin B 12, which is a surce f cbalt and an essential element fr nitrgen fixatin and lumichrme which stimulates rhizbium symbisis genes. PNSB are able t metablize varius txic mlecules such as hydrgen sulphide, amines and methane that can be prduced when rganic matter decmpses in sils especially under lw xygen levels such as waterlgging r sil cmpactin. These txic mlecules reduce plant grwth and inhibit sil micrbial activity such as nitrgen fixatin. PNSB applicatin als reduces drught, salinity, cld, heat, herbicide and heavy metal stress in plants by stimulating anti-xidant enzyme activity, increasing chlrphyll cntent, increasing phtsynthetic rate, increasing stmatal cnductivity and reducing membrane permeability. 8 SOIL CLASSIFICATION BASED ON THE USE OF APT DISEASE INDUCING SOILS Mst agricultural sils can be classified as disease-inducing sils characterized by the prcess whereby the intrductin f rganic matter int these sils results in a chemical decmpsitin prcess int inrganic substances, the prductin f maldurs and heat and the accumulatin f psitive ins. On these types f sils the applicatin f fertilizers and pesticides maintains crp prductivity and any increase in prductivity requires increasing surface area farmed. DISEASE SUPPRESSIVE SOILS The applicatin f mature cmpst t disease inducing sils can lead ver time t disease suppressive sils as is cmmnly fund n rganic farmed sils. ZYMOGENIC-SYNTHETIC SOILS When prbitics are applied and becme established in sils then any additins f rganic materials in the frm f crp residues, animal manures and/r liquid carbn surces (humics, fulvics, fish emulsins, rganic acids) t these sils results in a phtfermentative decmpsitin prcess by zymgenic micrbes leading t useful sluble biactive substances such as amin acids, nucleic acids, rganic acids, vitamins and anti-xidants which can be directly absrbed by plants. Synthetic micrbes in these sils such as PNSB and ther free-living nitrgen fixers can fix nitrgen and carbn frm the atmsphere using hydrgen frm methane, indles, skatles, methyl captan and rganic acids thereby adding energy t these sils and at the same time reduce the presence f these txic cmpunds. The highly prductive man-made Terra-Preta sils f the Amaznian basin are Zymgenic-Synthetic sils. Humus levels increase much faster n these sils and the crps grwn n these sils have an increased shelf life and d nt putrefy with age.
