United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series WAP June 2017 World Agricultural Turkey Wheat: Abundant Soil Moisture Supports Late Season Improvement Turkey wheat production for 2017/18 is forecast at 18.0 million metric tons (mmt), up 0.5 mmt from last month and up 0.8 mmt from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 7.8 million hectares compared to 7.7 last month with no change from last year. The 2017/18 winter wheat crop is two to three weeks behind last year s rapid development pace and slightly behind the long-term average. Fall dryness over the Anatolian Plateau delayed the winter wheat planting campaign and reduced the time for available crop establishment. Favorable snow cover protected winter crops against frost damage and fully replenished subsoil moisture reserves which benefited the crops as they resumed spring growth. Yield is forecast at 2.31 tons per hectare, 5 percent above last year and 2 percent above last month. Harvest typically begins in Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board

early July and is largely complete by the end of August. (For more information, please contact Russia Wheat: Outstanding Prospects for Winter Wheat in Southern Russia Russia wheat production for 2017/18 is forecast at 69.0 million metric tons, up 2.0 million from last month but down 3.5 million from last year s record output. The estimated harvested area of 27.5 million hectares is unchanged from last month. The forecast total wheat yield of 2.51 tons per hectare is 7 percent below last year s record but 8 percent above the 5-year average. All USDA crop production estimates for Russia exclude estimated output from Crimea. The month-to-month increase is based on outstanding conditions for winter wheat in the Southern District and North Caucasus District, which together account for 60 percent of the country s winter wheat output and 40 percent of the total wheat output. Current prospects for winter wheat in the Central and Volga Districts are less promising due in part to delays in crop development resulting from below normal temperatures. Winter wheat accounts for about 70 percent of Russia s total wheat output. (For more information, please contact Mark.Lindeman@fas.usda.gov.) India Wheat: Lowered USDA estimates 2017/18 wheat production at 96.0 million metric tons, down 1 percent from last month but up 10 percent from last year. The decrease is based on a reduction in area and official harvest reports. Harvested area is estimated at a near record 30.7 million hectares, down nearly 3 2

percent from last month, but up 2 percent from last year due to strong domestic prices and tight domestic supplies. Both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, which account for about 50 percent of India s total wheat production, expanded planted area by 6 and 14 percent, respectively, from last year. Yield is estimated at a near-record 3.12 tons per hectare, up 2 percent from last month and up 8 percent from last year. (For more information, please contact Arnella.Trent@fas.usda.gov). Brazil Corn: Extended Rainy Season Boosts 2016/17 Brazil 2016/17 corn production is estimated at a record 97 million metric tons (mmt), up 1.0 mmt from last month and up 45 percent from. Harvested area is estimated at 17.5 million hectares, unchanged from last month, and up 9 percent from with second-crop corn making up two-thirds of the total area. Yield is estimated at a record 5.54 metric tons per hectare, up 1 percent from last month and up 32 percent from the drought-affected crop. Brazil has two seasons for corn production. First-crop corn is planted in September and harvested in March. A larger second-season crop is planted after the early-season soybean harvest, typically from January to March. Harvesting of the first crop has wrapped up in the major growing regions. Favorable growing conditions resulted in record yields for the first crop. Planting of the second crop began in January and continues through June. Second-crop planting began earlier than normal this season and since then, rainfall has been near to above normal, with above-normal rainfall continuing into May in some areas. Satellite-derived NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) points to very good vegetation health during the growing season and above-average yields. Only northwestern Minas Gerais and northeastern Goiás have experienced drier-than-normal conditions; NDVI indicates below-average crop conditions. The second crop grown in this region constitutes less than 1 percent of total corn production. Second-crop harvesting began at the end of May. In Mato Grosso, which produces nearly 40 percent of the second crop, 3 percent of the crop has been harvested and yields are estimated 3 to 5 percent 3

higher than the 5-year average according to government and industry sources. Harvesting will continue through August in the central and southern states, and into December for the later planted crop in the northeastern states. (For more information, please contact Canada Corn: Decreases by 5 Percent for 2017/18 is forecast at 14.4 million metric tons, down 5 percent from last month, and down 9 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 1.45 million hectares, down 1 percent from last month. This month-to-month decrease is based mainly on delayed planting in Quebec, which accounts for about 30 percent of Canada s national production. Planting in Ontario, the major producing province, is 90 to 95 percent complete and accounts for about 70 percent of Canada s national production. Flooding occurred in Ontario and Quebec during early May. Although conditions dried out during the latter part of the month, planting delays continue. Planting in Quebec is at 8 percent complete, significantly behind the 4 year average of 79 percent planted by mid-may. (For more information, please contact Katie.McGaughey@fas.usda.gov.) Ukraine Corn: Estimated Area Up Slightly from Last Year Ukraine corn production for 2017/18 is estimated at 28.5 million tons, up 0.5 million from both last month and last year. The month-to-month increase is based on data from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, which reports sown area at slightly over 4.46 million hectares (mha) as of June 6 with planting 99 percent complete. USDA estimates harvested area at 4.4 mha, up 0.1 mha from last month and up 0.15 mha from last year. Over the past five years, between 1 and 6 percent of the final sown area was not harvested for grain. The forecast yield of 6.48 metric tons per hectare, which is essentially unchanged from last month, is down 2 percent from last year and 9 percent above the 5-year average. 4

The yield for Ukraine corn hinges mainly on weather during July and August, when the crop is advancing through the reproductive stages of development. Harvest will begin in September. (For more information, please contact South Africa Corn: Record 2016/17 Output Doubles Previous Crop South Africa s 2016/17 corn production is estimated at a record 16.4 million metric tons (mmt), up 1.1 mmt or 7 percent from last month and up 8.2 mmt or 100 percent from. Area is estimated at 3.0 million hectares, down 0.1 million hectares (mha) from last month and up 0.8 mha from. Yield is estimated at a record 5.47 metric tons per hectare, up 47 percent from the crop, which was reduced by severe drought. A record yield is expected due to well-above-average seasonal rainfall during January and February when the crop was in critical pollination and grain-filling stages. South Africa s Crop Estimates Committee estimate corn production for the commercial and developing sectors at a record 15.6 and 0.7 mmt, respectively. Record yields were also estimated in Free State and North West provinces where over 60 percent of national corn output occurs. Seasonal rains were favorable throughout most of the country during the planting season from November through December and well above average during January and February while crop stage advanced from pollination through grain filling stages. Rainfall was below average during March but crop yields were not adversely affected because surplus rainfall during February provided abundant soil moisture reserves during March. Satellite-derived NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) for the Free State and North West provinces showed maximum or nearly maximum values from January through May

NDVI yield regression analysis indicates record yields are expected in the top corn producing provinces. (For more information, please contact Brazil Soybeans: 2016/17 Another Record Crop Brazil 2016/17 soybean production is estimated at a record 114 million metric tons (mmt), up 2.4 mmt from last month and up 17.5 mmt from. Harvested area is estimated at 34 million hectares (mha), unchanged from last month and up 0.7 mha from. Yield is estimated at a record 3.35 metric tons per hectare, up 2 percent from last month and 16 percent from. Excellent weather during the growing season and higher-yielding varieties produced the record soybean crop for Brazil. The majority of the soybean crop was harvested from January through May. Incoming harvest results have continued to indicate a much larger soybean crop than initially expected with record yields in many states. Harvesting continues through June in minor soybean growing areas in the North and Northeast regions. (For more information, please contact MariaAnulacion@fas.usda.gov). Argentina Soybeans: 2016/17 Increased Despite Slow Harvest Recent rain in late May and early June in northern Buenos Aires, La Pampa, and northern Argentina has slowed soybean harvesting. for 2016/17 is estimated at 57.8 million metric tons, 1 percent above last month and 2 percent above last year. Area is estimated at 18.7 million hectares, down slightly from last month and down 4 percent from. Yields are expected to be above average, at 3.10 tons per hectare, up 2 percent from last month and up 7 percent above last year. The month-to-month increase is based on higher yields for later-planted soybeans. These laterplanted soybeans were expected to have fewer pods and branches resulting in lower yields; however, estimated yield increased due 6

to ample moisture throughout flowering and into pod-fill. (For more information, please contact China Cotton: Projected to Increase from Last Month China s 2017/18 cotton production is forecast at 24 million bales (5.23 million metric tons), up 0.5 million bales from last month and up 1.25 million bales from last year. Area is forecast at 3.05 million hectares (mha), up 0.05 mha from last month and up 0.15 mha or 5 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at a record 1,713 kilograms per hectare, up slightly from both last month and last year s record. Chinese officials are reporting a moderate increase in planted area, specifically in Xinjiang and Hebei provinces with favorable weather conditions across cotton regions. This year s area increase is a diversion from the 5-year trend. For the past five seasons, cotton area declined in all cotton regions as farmers responded to changes in agricultural policy. In an effort to deal with high stockpiles of cotton, the government introduced policy changes in 2014 that resulted in the removal of government cotton production support measures including direct subsidies to farmers. From 2014 to 2016, cotton area continued to decline at a faster pace in the eastern production provinces than in the west. For 2017/18, anticipated higher cotton profitability has led to a moderate increase in planted area. According to the National Cotton Monitoring Network (NCMN), a total of 3.07 million hectares is estimated to be planted, a 5-percent increase from last year. Xinjiang province accounts for roughly two-thirds of the national total. The NCMN estimates are based on the annual survey of farmers planting intention conducted in March Planting is almost complete and the optimal planting period is typically April to May. Since the season began in April, most major cotton growing regions have received average to aboveaverage rainfall, resulting in favorable planting conditions and early plant growth. (For more information, please contact Dath.Mita@fas.usda.gov). Pakistan Cotton: Estimate Increases USDA estimates Pakistan's 2017/18 cotton production at 9.3 million 480-pound bales, up 0.8 million bales or 9 percent from last month and up 1.6 million bales or 21 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 2.85 million hectares, up 0.25 million hectares or 10 percent from last month, and up 0.45 million hectares or 19 percent from last year. Yield is estimated at 710 kilograms per hectare, essentially unchanged from last month, but up 2 percent from last year. Cotton is typically sown from April to mid-june. Sowing progress is principally influenced by 7

the pace of the preceding wheat harvest progress and irrigation water availability. The Government of Pakistan's Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) has established an area target of 3.11 million hectares for the 2017/18 season. As of June 2 the PCCC estimated that 2.6 million hectares had been sown. At the current planting pace, USDA estimates that sowing will only reach 92 percent of the target for the season. This will result in a final area of 2.85 million hectares. A trend yield of 710 kilograms per hectare results in a production forecast of 9.3 million bales. The monsoon season accounts for about 70 percent of the total annual precipitation. The extent and distribution of monsoon rainfall during July through September is critical for the production of kharif season crops, including cotton. Approximately 75 percent of Pakistan s total cotton crop is produced in Punjab; Sindh produces 25 percent. (For more information, please contact James.Crutchfield@fas.usda.gov). Ukraine Sunseed: Area and Forecast at Record Levels USDA forecasts Ukraine 2017/18 sunseed production at 14.0 million metric tons (mmt), up 0.5 mmt from last month and up 0.25 mmt from last year s record. The month-to-month increase is based on an increase in estimated area, from 6.0 to 6.2 million hectares. A June 6 report from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food (MAPF) cites planted area at 5.5 million hectares (mha). The final sown area reported by the State Statistical Service of Ukraine, published in late July, typically surpasses the level cited by MAPF in early June by about 0.6 mha. USDA forecasts harvested area at 6.2 mha, up 0.2 mha from last month and matching last year s level. All USDA crop production estimates for Ukraine include estimated output from Crimea. Yield is forecast at a record 2.26 tons per hectare, nearly unchanged from last month and 11 percent above the 5-year average. Yield has been increasing over the past ten years, due largely to a steady improvement in agricultural technology including a substantial increase in the imports of hybrid seed. Sunflower seed imports through March for the 2017 growing season had 8

already surpassed the previous record level. (For more information, please contact EU Rapeseed: Slips in Germany and Spain from Dryness and Cold Rapeseed production for 2017/18 in the European Union (EU) is forecast at 21.1 million metric tons (mmt), down 0.2 mmt from last month, down 0.7 mmt from last year, and 0.5 mmt below the 5-year average. Harvested area is estimated at 6.6 million hectares (mha), up slightly from last month, and up 0.1 mha or 2 percent above last year. Yield is forecast at 3.18 tons per hectare, down 2 percent from last month and down 3 percent from the 5-year average, but up 2 percent from last year. Drought in western Europe has driven yield potential down in several countries. A dry winter carried over into a dry spring in Germany with production estimated at 4.9 million tons, down 0.3 million from last month. Reductions in the German crop were primarily due to drought, but the crop was also exposed to prolonged late-spring freezes. Similarly, France has struggled with dryness and frost but May weather has improved crop conditions somewhat. Spain, a newcomer to rapeseed production, has been rapidly expanding sown area. This year s drought, however, significantly damaged the crop. Area increases in France, Denmark, and Sweden partially offset production decreases in Germany and Spain.
