A variety of desig styles ca be created icludig curved walls, paels istalled upright vertically, horizotally or i a brick patter. A wide rage of decorative fiishes ca be used icludig site-applied acrylic textures ad available factory-applied polyurethae plai colours ad metallic fiishes. This documet is a guide oly. It is iteded for use by builders, claddig istallers ad other cotractors who may be ivolved with the istallatio of the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system. This documet must be read i cojuctio with the project specific drawigs ad specificatios as well as the curret James Hardie ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system Techical Specificatio. Both the 9mm ad 12mm thick ExoTec facade paels may be used i wall facades, fascias ad soffits. 5 4 SAFe WORkINg PRACTICeS WARNINg - DO NOT BReAThe DUST AND CUT ONLy IN WeLL VeNTILATeD AReA James Hardie products cotai sad, a source of respirable crystallie silica which is cosidered by some iteratioal authorities to be a cause of cacer from some occupatioal sources. Breathig excessive amouts of respirable silica dust ca also cause a disablig ad potetially fatal lug disease called silicosis, ad has bee liked with other diseases. Some studies suggest smokig may icrease these risks. Durig istallatio or hadlig: (1) work i outdoor areas with ample vetilatio; (2) miimise dust whe cuttig by usig either score ad sap kife, fibre cemet shears or, where ot feasible, use a HardieBlade TM Saw Blade ad dust-reducig circular saw attached to a HEPA vacuum; (3) war others i the immediate area to avoid breathig dust; (4) wear a properly-fitted, approved dust mask or respirator (e.g. P1 or P2) i accordace with applicable govermet regulatios ad maufacturer istructios to further limit respirable silica exposures. Durig clea-up, use HEPA vacuums or wet cleaup methods - ever dry sweep. Positio cuttig statio so wid will blow dust away from the user or others i workig area. 2. Use a dust reducig circular saw equipped with HardieBlade TM Saw Blade ad HEPA vacuum extractio. SANDINg/DRILLINg/OTheR MAChININg Whe sadig, drillig or machiig you should always wear a P1 or P2 dust mask ad war others i the immediate area. IMPORTANT NOTeS 1. NEVER use a power saw idoors. 2. NEVER use a circular saw blade that does ot carry the HardieBlade TM logo. 3. NEVER dry sweep - Use wet suppressio or HEPA vacuum. 4. NEVER use griders. 5. ALWAYS follow tool maufacturers safety recommedatios. WORkINg INSTRUCTIONS Refer to recommeded safe workig practices before startig ay cuttig or machiig of product. hardieblade TM Saw Blade The HardieBlade TM Saw Blade used with a dust-reducig saw is ideal for fast, clea cuttig of James Hardie fibre cemet products. A dustreducig saw uses a dust deflector or a dust collector which ca be coected to a vacuum system. Whe sawig, clamp a straight-edge to the sheet as a guide ad ru the saw base plate alog the straight edge whe makig the cut. hole-forming For smooth clea cut circular holes: Mark the cetre of the hole o the sheet. Pre-drill a pilot hole. Usig the pilot hole as a guide, cut the hole to the appropriate diameter with a hole saw fitted to a heavy duty electric drill. For irregular holes: Small rectagular or circular holes ca be cut by drillig a series of small holes aroud the perimeter of the hole the tappig out the waste piece from the sheet face. Tap carefully to avoid damage to sheets, esurig the sheet edges are properly supported. P1 or P2 respirators should be used i cojuctio with above cuttig practices to further reduce dust exposures. Additioal exposure iformatio is available at to help you determie the most appropriate cuttig method for your job requiremets. If cocer still exists about exposure levels or you do ot comply with the above practices, you should always cosult a qualified idustrial hygieist or cotact James Hardie for further iformatio. STORAge AND handling To avoid damage, all James Hardie buildig products should be stored with edges ad corers of the sheets protected from chippig. James Hardie buildig products must be istalled i a dry state ad protected from rai durig trasport ad storage. The product must be laid flat uder cover o a smooth level surface clear of the groud to avoid exposure to water, moisture, etc. quality James Hardie coducts striget quality checks to esure ay product maufactured falls withi our quality spectrum. It is the resposibility of the builder to esure the product meets aesthetic requiremets before istallatio. 6 5 PRePARATION Prior to istallatio of the ExoTec Facade Pael ad Fixig System esure that the required preparatio steps have bee followed, see Figure 2 Istall or appropriate membrae i accordace with AS/NZS The use of weather barrier or suitable membrae is madatory. The istallatio of ay barrier must ot restrict moisture from reachig flashigs ad draiig out. 2. The egieer must limit the deflectio of the supportig structure to spa/250 for serviceability Wid Load. The pael layout will determie the locatio of the ExoTec ad itermediate JH top hats, see Figures 3 to 6. 8 7 INSTALLATION TOP hat INSTALLATION ExoTec facade paels must be fixed to: 1) ExoTec top hat for vertical sheet joits. 2) Itermediate JH top hat for supportig the paels betwee vertical sheet joits. The top hats must be istalled vertically over steel, masory or timber structures, see Figure 7. The top hat fixig to the structure must be as per the egieer s detail. 9 PANeL INSTALLATION Paels are istalled with a 10mm omial expressed joit betwee adjacet paels, vertically ad horizotally. Vertical joits up to 20mm width ca be formed, with additioal care required at istallatio to esure the pael edges cover the ExoTec gasket sap strip o both sides of the joit. A miimum vertical expressed joit of 6mm is allowed with care. Horizotal joits are a omial 10mm. NOTe Whe applyig sealat to the edge of the ExoTec facade pael, refer to page 13 for recommeded sealats. 10 FASTeNINg MeThODS Paels may be fixed to ExoTec top hats ad itermediate JH top hats by either: 1. Coutersuk fasteers: flush fiished over screw heads with a suitable epoxy, ad the with James Hardie base coat. Geerally used with site-applied acrylic coatigs. 2. exposed head screws: usig pa, wafer or hex head screws. Used where pre-fiished paels are istalled. Exposed head fasteers may be colour coated to match pael fiish. Fasteers must have the appropriate level of durability required for the iteded project. This is of particular importace i coastal areas, subject to salt spray ad other corrosive eviromets. Fasteers must be fully compatible with all other materials that the fasteers will come i cotact with, to esure the durability ad itegrity of assembly. See Tables 3 ad 4, for maximum fasteer spacigs to top hats for desig wid pressure i the curret ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system Techical Specificatio. Coutersuk Fasteers 1. Mark fasteer locatios as specified, see Figure Drill clearace holes ito ExoTec facade pael, for No.10 gauge screws usig a 6mm coutersuk masory drill, which provides a 6.2 to 6.3mm diameter hole, see Figure 10. coutersik hole to a depth of 2.5mm to 3mm. Mix oly sufficiet epoxy for immediate use. James Hardie recommeds the use of megapoxy P1 or Hilti CA 125. Where the temperature is below 15ºC, use Hilti CA Cover coutersik fasteer with epoxy leveled flush with sheet. To accommodate for secod coat do ot overfill hole. Allow epoxy to cure. 11 exposed head Fasteers 1. Mark fasteer locatios as specified (see Figure 8). 2. Drill clearace holes for No.10 gauge screws usig a 6mm masory drill, which provides a 6.2 to 6.3mm diameter hole. 3. Faste pael usig corrosio resistat (miimum class 3) No. 10 gauge x 25mm pa, wafer or hex head self drillig screw ito top hat. For areas withi a corrosive eviromet, refer to fasteer maufacturer for suitability ad compatibility of fasteers ad relevat stadard. 4. 12 50mm BACkINg STRIP INSTALLATION At horizotal pael joits, ExoTec backig strips are adhered alog the back top edge of the ExoTec facade pael prior to pael istallatio. The ExoTec backig strip is cut the width of the pael. 70mm Sealat fill the back of the rolled stop at each ed 50mm log with 3mm sealat bead. Apply a cotiuous 6mm diameter bead of polyurethae sealat to the backig strip below the stop. Whe istallig, apply 6mm diameter sealat bead betwee back of the backig strip ad top hat. Cotiue bead oto back of pael. Istall pael before sealat cures to esure bod. Esure the ExoTec backig strip stop is restig o the ExoTec facade pael top edge. Istall ExoTec facade pael Apply a cotiuous 6mm diameter bead of polyurethae sealat to the backig strip above the stop. Fix ext course of paels to ExoTec backig strip above the stop. Apply a cotiuous filler of sealat alog the top edges of the pael ito the horizotal joit, refer to sealat sectio i this maual. Allow sealat to cure before fixig pael. 100mm 100mm Do ot fix fasteers through the ExoTec backig strip. Esure the eds of the ExoTec backig strip cover ad seal up agaist the vertical eopree gasket strips. 13 8 MOVeMeNT joints SeALANT FILLeD joints For desig wid pressures icludig ad above 4.0kPa, all horizotal ad vertical joits must be cotiuously sealed over bod breaker tape. Where joits are required to be sealat filled, James Hardie Joit sealat ad Bostik Seal flex are recommeded. Where vertical joits are sealed, a bod breaker tape must be istalled behid the sealat. CURVeD FACADeS The ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system ca be used to follow curved walls as described below: For radii 10m or greater Use 9mm thick ExoTec facade paels which ca be easily bet to the curve of the frame. ExoTec facade paels are to be fixed i a horizotal orietatio oly. Refer to Table 4 for maximum top hat spacig. TABLe 4 MAx. TOP hat SPACINg FOR VARIOUS RADII RADII (m) MAx. Movemet joits are provided by the omial 10mm expressed or sealat filled joits at the perimeter of the paels. Vertical structural joits may be required i the claddig to coicide with structural joits i the structure to accommodate the aticipated movemet. Horizotal structural joits are required at slab level where the framig supportig the top hats moves with the creep deflectio i the slab. For details of abutmet to masory walls, refer page 7 i the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system Techical Specificatio. For more iformatio o movemet joits, refer page 6 i the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system Techical Specificatio. NOTe The project egieer is resposible for specifyig the aticipated movemet. NOTeS 1. The closer the spacig of top hats, the less likely they will read through as facets i the paels, particularly at a small radii. 2. 9mm thick paels may be able to be curved to a smaller radius, but this is likely to overstress paels. NOTe Whe fixig curved sheets, commece fixig from the cetre ad work outwards to avoid drummiess. Particular care should be take whe curvig paels to esure the supports are o a true curve. If ot, apart from poor appearace, there is a risk of locally over-stressig the paels ad causig crackig. Alterate materials ad istallatio methods are available for radii less tha specified above icludig, glass reiforced cemet (GRC) istalled accordig to maufacturer s specificatios. 23 16 WARRANTy exotec facade pael ad fixig system 10 year WARRANTy jauary 2012 James Hardie Australia Pty Limited ( James Hardie ) warrats to the first purchaser of ExoTec facade pael (Product) from James Hardie ad the last purchaser of the Product prior to istallatio that, subject to compliace with the Coditios of Warraty below: - for a period of 10 years from the date of purchase, the Product will be free from defects due to defective factory workmaship or materials; ad - for a period of 10 years from the date of purchase, the Product will be resistat to damage from crackig, moisture, rottig, fire ad termites to the extet set out i James Hardie s relevat published literature curret at the time of istallatio; ad - for a period of 12 moths from the date of purchase that the accessories supplied by James Hardie will be free from defects due to defective factory workmaship or materials.
