3 Meter ad Regulator Clearaces Outside Meters Meters should be istalled i accessible outside locatios so they ca be easily read, chaged ad available for maiteace work. Locatio ad Clearace Requiremets: Maitai a miimum distace of 1 foot from arc-producig electrical equipmet or other sources of igitio. Residetial meters should ot be coected to udergroud pipig dowstream of the meter except for pipig that serves gas utilizatio equipmet located outdoors. Note: Certai jurisdictios have meter locatio specificatios. Please check with your local jurisdictio. Iside Meters Locatios: Istall the regular as close as possible to where the service lie eters the buildig. Maitai miimum clearace distaces of: 3 feet from sources of igitio. 3 feet from sources of heat that could raise the temperature of the meter to 120 degrees Fahreheit or otherwise damage the meter. Vet Requiremets: The meter room should be able to commuicate either with the outside or with a occupied portio of the buildig. The effective vet area should be a miimum of 3 square iches for: - A cabiet cotaiig three or fewer residetial size meters - A meter room with a floor area of 10 square feet or less cotaiig three or fewer residetial size meters A miimum of 10 square iches for a meter room or cabiet cotaiig at least oe commercial size meter 1.5M rotary or larger or more tha 3 meters of ay size. A miimum of 10 square iches for a meter room with a floor area greater tha 10 square feet. A miimum of 1 foot above the floor of the meter room. A udercut door is ot cosidered to be a vet i compliace with these requiremets. If the meter is istalled i a cabiet or closet, the iterior of the cabiet or closet should ot commuicate with a floor, ceilig or wall cavity or with a room or buildig story other tha the oe cotaiig the closet or cabiet. Protectig Meter Istallatios At the time of istallatio, meter ad regulators should be located i areas where damage from floods or exteral forces, such as vehicle traffic, is miimized ad the ecessary meter protectio istalled. Ay existig istallatios foud to be iadequately protected from floods or exteral forces must be reported ad the deficiecy corrected. Flood Areas: Meters ad regulators istalled i areas kow to flood should be located above the high water mark. If it is ot practical to locate meters ad regulators above the high water mark, the regulator vet should termiate 12 ich above the high water mark. If floatig debris is aticipated durig a flood, guards should be istalled. Vehicle Traffic: Istall meters ad regulators away from roads, driveways, parkig areas or other locatios exposed to vehicle traffic or other exteral forces. Where ot practical to istall meters ad regulators away from such hazards, guards must be istalled to protect the istallatio. Guards may cosist of, but are ot limited to, posts, bollards, railigs, etc. Vet Lies ad Termiatios Vet lies may oly be istalled above groud. All vet termiatios must: Termiate outdoors at least 12 iches above grade with a isect-resistat scree. Maitai a miimum of 12 iches clearace from ay horizotal surface directly below the vet. Allow gas to vet freely away from buildig opeigs such as widows, doors or air itakes. Miimum vet clearaces from sources of igitio must maitai: - A 3 foot clearace from a IRV regulator with ¾ i ilet coectio - A 3 foot clearace from a 1 ich or smaller relief valve - A 5 foot clearace from a relief valve larger tha 1-2 iches - Cotact Washigto Gas Trade Relatios Specialist Luella Miles for relief valve larger tha 2 iches Maitai the same clearace from direct vet appliace itakes as from sources of igitio. Maitai clearace above the roof surface if termiatig a relief valve vet or a IRV vet above a flat roof: Maitai at least a 3 foot clearace for a vet from a IRV regulator with a ¾ i ilet coectio. Maitai at least a 4 foot clearace for a vet from a IRV regulator with ilet coectio larger tha a ¾ i or from a separate relief valve. Oriet the termiatio poit so that flow from the vet is dowward to prevet etry of raiwater ito the vet. Termiate above the high-water mark i areas kow to flood. If kow, termiate above the 100-year flood level. Meter Baks Locatio ad Clearace: Meter baks must be istalled outside uless there are o practical outside locatios. If it is ot practical to istall the meter bak outside, locate the meter bak as ear as practical to the poit where the gas lie eters the buildig. Outside Istallatios: The meter bak istallatio should be located as ear as practical to the outside buildig wall of the buildig it is servig. The outlet of each meter shall eter the buildig without goig back udergroud. Iside Istallatios: Meter baks should ot be istalled iside buildigs or other structures uless there are o other practical alteratives. All regulator ad relief valve vets should be exteded to the outside ad will termiate where gas ca vet freely away from buildig opeigs. Meter Rooms Wheever practical, a iside meter bak should be istalled i meter room separate from electrical service equipmet. Each meter room must be vetilated should be located as ear as practical to the poit where the gas lie eters the buildig. 5 Meter Shut Offs A meter may be shut off for safety or billig issues. If a meter is shut off, chages should ot be made to the service. For assistace with a meter shut off, please cotact Washigto Gas at Tags Washigto Gas uses 2 tags to ote faulty or improperly istalled equipmet o the customer side of the meter. Red Dager Tag: Used whe equipmet or pipig is o-repairable or presets a immediate hazard. The gas is tured off to the faulty equipmet or pipig ad place a red dager tag o it. The customer s hard copy is placed o the faulty equipmet. Orage Warig Tag: Used whe a coditio does ot preset a immediate hazard. The gas is left o ad the warig tag is placed o the equipmet or pipig. The customer s hard copy is left o the equipmet presetig the potetial violatio. Note: There are 3 parts to the tags: customer copy, compay copy ad the tag attached to the equipmet. Cross Bores Cross bores refers to a atural gas pipelie or facility reported to be iside of a sewer lie. If this is suspected, please otify Washigto Gas immediately. A ivestigatio will be coducted util it ca be cofirmed where a sewer lie itrusio is preset or there is o coflict. Ca t Gai Access (CGA) CGA idicates that Washigto Gas employees caot safely access the meter ad service. Customers are otified of the issue with a CGA card. If a leak is suspected ad the meter cao be obtaied, actios must still be take to esure public safety ad to protect life ad property. Actios such as turig gas off at the meter, turig gas off i the street ad cotactig the local fire departmet may be ecessary. If a gas leak is suspected, call immediately. Structure Over Service (SOS) SOS is defied as a eclosed buildig iteded for huma occupacy built over a existig service lie.
