3 Why use VMZINC facades? Itroductio Zic is amog the most sustaiable metals used i costructio today ad was first used for roofig ad gutters i large Europea cities at the begiig of the th cetury. Batte cap zic paels were used for masard roofs but towards the ed of the 0th cetury architects bega to use zic as a way to clad facades. Over the past 0 years VMZINC has developed a rage of facade systems that vary i dimesio, joit size ad type. All VMZINC facade systems ca be used for ew build ad refurbishmet alike ad i combiatio with may other buildig materials. As with all VMZINC products exceptioal durability, very limited maiteace ad a wide rage of beautiful fiishes are offered by VMZINC facades. As with roofig ad raiwater systems, maufacturig processes for our facade systems presets a low evirometal impact, particularly with regard to eergy expediture. VMZINC facade systems beefit from zic s self-protectig patia which develops as a result of exposure to water ad carbo dioxide. Over the last 0 years the quatity of sulphur dioxide i the atmosphere has bee greatly reduced. SO beig the key aget of corrosio meas that corrosio rates are ow less tha μm per year o facades. With a iitial thickess of mm, the estimated life spa of a zic facade is well over a hudred years. % of old rolled zic recovered every year i Wester Europe, curretly estimated at 00,000 toes, is reused. VMZINC udertakes Life Cycle Aalysis (LCA) tests o its products ad publishes Evirometal Product Declaratios (EPDs), such as BRE Evirometal Profiles, available from our website ad These provide users with comprehesive, reliable ad trasparet iformatio o relevat evirometal characteristics. The iformatio is also used by VMZINC as the basis for its eco-desig approach. Comparative eergy expediture i maufacture Compared with other metals, very little eergy is eeded to maufacture zic metal from ore less tha half the cosumptio of copper ad stailess steel ad less tha a quarter of that used for alumiium. CO ad other greehouse gas emissios are also, therefore, proportioally less.

5 Sustaiable performace BRE Evirometal profiles measure the impacts of a costructio material, product or buildig system throughout its life, ot oly durig its maufacture, but also its use i a buildig over a 0-year period. This icludes its extractio, processig, use ad maiteace ad its evetual disposal. VMZINC has bee audited ad reviewed by BRE Global. The Life Cycle Assessmet (LCA) modellig derives a Certified Evirometal Profile ad a Gree Guide ratig has bee produced. A wide rage of zic roofig ad claddig systems has bee audited with the systems receivig a Gree Guide ratig of A ad A+. These profiles ca the be applied to the BREEAM (BRE Evirometal Assessmet Method) allowig VMZINC to cotribute to schemes such as the Code for Sustaiable Homes. OHSAS 00 Sice 00, VMZINC has bee OHSAS 00 certified, thus coformig to occupatioal health ad safety maagemet systems. ISO 00 VMZINC maufacturig plats have coformed to ISO 00 sice 00/ so processes are strictly cotrolled to esure that emissios are sigificatly below the atioal regulatio threshold. ISO 00 ISO 00 is the iteratioally recogised stadard for the quality maagemet of busiesses ad applies to all Umicore/VMZINC products ad services. Certificatio was origially obtaied i ad updated i November 00 to coform to ISO 00: 000.

6 The systems Uderlyig priciples Itroductio Raiscree facades Joit types VMZINC has bee used as a material to clad facades for may decades. Iitially traditioal roofig systems such as stadig seam paels were istalled as `roofs o walls`. Flat lock paels have also bee istalled for may decades. Both of these systems require veted cotiuous substrates ad are commoly istalled by traditioal hard metal roofig cotractors. Over the past two decades raiscree facades have become very popular ad VMZINC offers a umber of these raiscree systems. A raicree facade is a outer ski that is back-vetilated by a air space that is mm deep. The system ca be used o both ew build ad reovatio but always allows the outer layer to breathe whilst the ier layer deals with thermal isulatio ad air leakage. All joits are dry ad do ot use ay form of sealat. VMZINC wall paels ca be joied usig three mechaical joits: Stadig seam Flat lock Stadig seam Flat lock Reveal VMZINC PLUS VMZINC PLUS is a uique pateted product that allows zic to be istalled o vetilated plywood (page 0). The product cosists of VMZINC (i all fiishes) havig a 0μm coatig applied to the uderside thus allowig a more varied amout of substrates to be used ad elimiatig the risk of the formatio of white rust o the uderside of the zic stadig seam paels. Whilst stadig seam paels ca offer a cotiuity from roof to wall they will ot offer absolute flatess. Flat lock paels also offer a more textured fiish. The iterlockig pael system provides flat paels but they are limited to 00mm i width. VMZ composite material o the other had ca offer excellet flatess whilst maitaiig paels of up to 00mm wide. 8 Surface fiishes Natural VMZINC Natural VMZINC has a shiy metallic appearace whe ew ad develops a patia over time. I facade applicatios, it may take 0 years for the matt grey patia to form. It ca be quickly soldered without removig the patia. QUARTZ-ZINC QUARTZ-ZINC offers a appearace ad texture that does ot chage over time. Whe QUARTZ-ZINC is scratched, it will self heal. The grey toes of QUARTZ-ZINC bled well with existig costructio materials ideal for refurbishmet. Natural VMZINC QUARTZ-ZINC ANTHRA-ZINC ANTHRA-ZINC with its visible grai matches the colour of slate ad bleds well i combiatio with photovoltaic paels. AZENGAR AZENGAR is the ew surface fiish from VMZINC which is the first egraved zic givig a product with a matt, heterogeeous ad light aspect. AZENGAR ca be used i the same fashio as other VMZINC products for both roofs ad facades ad is ow available with the PLUS coatig. ANTHRA-ZINC AZENGAR

9 Surface fiishes Please cotact us for samples Stadard PIGMENTO PIGMENTO fiishes offer a uique rage of colours (Blue, Gree, Brow, Red) that ehaces ay buildig. This atural product eables the texture of the QUARTZ-ZINC to still be see whilst offerig the desiger the choice of colour to complemet other elemets of a facade or roof. The colouratio of the zic is achieved with a special pigmet layer that ehaces the qualities of the zic without presetig a block colour. This product is tested to EN-0/00 ad EN -/00. PIGMENTO BLUE Stadard PIGMENTO PIGMENTO GREEN Bespoke PIGMENTO New PIGMENTO provides a special resiliece i a marie eviromet ad makes the removal of salt deposits easier tha o the regular surfaces of other zic fiishes. The PIGMENTO rage is ow available i bespoke colours. Samples of the colours idicated here are available upo request. For other colours a sample ad RAL colour should be submitted i order to assess feasibility. 11 Stadig seam Overview VMZ Stadig Seam is a vetilated claddig system that ca be used for both reovatio ad ew build. As the ame stadig seam implies, the system cosists of seams that ca be crimped i a sigle or double lock (for greater flatess sigle lock seams sometimes referred to as agle seams are recommeded). The system has a traditioal look with the seams beig mm high. The trays ca be istalled horizotally, vertically ad at a agle. This facade system offers the possibility to clad all types of walls: flat, curved or complex forms. Aother great advatage of this zic facade system is that it ca be used o both walls ad roofs, thus allowig roof ad wall to bled as oe (stadig seam roofs require double lock seams). The claddig paels ca be various sizes but we would ot recommed that they be more tha m i legth ad 0mm i width. All aspects of VMZINC ca be used with 0.mm beig the recommeded thickess for facades.

12 Stadig seam Structure Istallatio The system is very lightweight as the paels weigh o more tha kg/m ad ca be fixed back to both soft wood ope gap boardig ad plywood. Both substrates require the use of mm thick wood ad a veted airspace should be left behid the timber of at least mm. The plywood must be weather ad boil proof. WBP plywood is more precisely described as EN- (glue bod) ad EN- (timber performace).whe soft wood ope gap boardig is used it is possible to omit every other board, however a fully boarded substrate should be used i accessible areas. The substrate must be flush to withi mm ad all screws ad ails must be coutersuk. VMZINC PLUS must be used o plywood substrates. For projects where combustible materials such as plywood caot be used galvaised steel decks ca be used as a substrate see page for further iformatio. The paels are istalled i a sequetial order from either left to right or right to left for vertical paels. Horizotal paels must be istalled from bottom up. For paels less tha m i legth fixed clips ca be used. For loger paels slidig clips must be used towards the bottom o vertical paels ad to the left ad right of the cetre for horizotal paels. VMZINC clips are made from 0 stailess steel ad each clip must resist a pull-out force of 0daN. It is recommeded that screws be used to secure the clips with three beig used per slidig clip. The use of ails offers sigificatly less resistace, but i the evet of usig ails, cotractors are advised to use rig shak ails. The paels should be istalled with the protective film i place. 15 Flat lock Overview VMZ Flat Lock paels, sometimes kow as shigles, are istalled o a cotiuous veted substrate o both reovatio projects ad ew build alike. The system cosists of paels with 0 degree hems approximately mm wide that iterlock ad are held o the substrate usig cleats. The system allows a great deal of flexibility as flat lock paels ca be made to may shapes ad sizes. The paels ca be square, diamod shaped ad rectagular. The maximum recommeded visible width for a pael is 00mm with the maximum legth beig 000mm. The thickess of the zic used will deped o pael dimesios with small paels usig 0.mm zic whereas the larger paels will require mm thick zic. Icreased zic thickess will offer a flatter pael, however icreasig pael dimesios will have the opposite effect ad may iduce some ueveess.

It is recommeded that screws be used to secure the cleats. The use of ails offers sigificatly less resistace, but i the evet of usig ails, cotractors are advised to use rig shak ails. The paels should be istalled with the protective film i place.

17 Flat lock VMZINC stadard flat lock pael sizes Developmets over m high The sizes ad shapes idicated i this table are stadard ad are therefore more cost effective tha completely bespoke sizes. The sizes idicated correspod to dimesios as see o the fiished wall. All paels are delivered with stailess steel clips. For buildigs where combustible materials such as plywood caot be used (for example residetial developmets over m i height), galvaised steel decks ca be used as a substrate for the flat lock ad stadig seam paels. The steel deck must be at least 0.mm thick ad have dimesios allowig clips to be attached at the required spacigs. VMZINC Membrae should be istalled betwee the VMZINC ad steel deck. Corrugated steel deck ca oly be used o vertical surfaces. For all surfaces such as sills, parapets, etc the substrate must be cotiuous. Steel decks ca also be used as a substrate for stadig seam paels o vertical surfaces. 21 Overlappig pael Overview The Overlappig Pael system comprises of a ecoomical kit of paels ad flashigs that ca be easily istalled o either timber battes or metal claddig rails. The system is fixed with screws or with a ail gu resultig i the paels beig held i place with o visible fasteers. Overlappig paels are 00mm wide ad have either a depth of mm or 0mm. They are istalled horizotally ad available i m legths i both QUARTZ-ZINC ad ANTHRA-ZINC. Overlappig paels ca be supplied i PIGMENTO upo request.

22 Overlappig pael Structure Istallatio The overlappig paels are istalled o vertical claddig rails at 00mm cetres. The rails ca be either softwood timber with a 0mm supportig width or 0mm wide metal rails (mm thick Alumiium or.mm thick galvaised steel). A veted air space of at least mm must be allowed for behid the paels. I a sequetial order the paels are istalled from bottom to top ad fixed with a ail gu for timber supports ad screwed ito positio whe usig metal claddig rails. The paels should be istalled with the protective film i place. A full set of stadard flashig trim is available for base, top, corers ad widows. VMZINC PLUS must be used o all o-vertical flashigs if ope gap soft boards are ot beig used.

25 Iterlockig pael Overview Iterlockig Paels cosist of a pael face, reveal joit ad are fixed i positio usig hidde fasteers. The paels ca be orietated horizotally or vertically ad ca be applied equally to soffits. Paels are available i all fiishes of mm thick VMZINC with stadard pael widths beig 00mm, 0mm ad 00mm. The maximum pael width is mm ad legth m, paels of less tha 0.m are ot recommeded. Joit widths ca be either 0mm or 0mm. It should be oted that pael width = pael face + joit. The depth of the pael is mm.

26 Iterlockig pael Structure Istallatio The system is relatively lightweight as the paels weigh o more tha kg/m ad ca be fixed back to both timber ad metal sub frames. Support rails are istalled at 00mm cetres (maximum). Alumiium rails are mm thick with both timber ad alumiium rails requirig a supportig face of at least 0mm. All paels that are over m i legth must allow for thermal expasio ad cotractio by usig stailess steel clips. The fixed poit beig at the top of the pael for vertical istallatio ad i the middle for horizotal istallatio. The paels are istalled i a sequetial order from top to bottom for horizotal paels. The upper edge of each pael is egaged ito the lower edge of the pael above. The paels are mechaically attached usig screws ad/or the pael fixig clip that allows for thermal movemet. The paels should be istalled with the protective film i place. VMZINC PLUS must be used o all o-vertical flashigs if ope gap soft boards are ot beig used. Pael fixig clip

29 Sie wave Overview VMZ Sie Wave is a corrugated profile i zic that ca be fixed to a woode or a metal framework. Alog with face fixed VMZ Composite sheets this is oe of the few VMZ facade systems that relies o visible fasteers. The stadard profile for the pael is a /mm module which is available i both 0.mm ad mm thickesses. The system ca be used to clad walls both horizotally ad vertically.

30 Sie wave Structure Istallatio The system is fixed back to timber or metal (galvaised steel at least.mm thick or alumiium at least mm thick) rails that are typically at cetres of betwee 0.m ad.m (depedig o loadig). The rails must have a supportig face width of 0mm ad should allow a miimum veted space betwee the VMZ Sie wave pael ad the isulatio/sheathig of mm. The paels are istalled i a sequetial order from bottom up. Paels are fixed i place with stailess steel screws o every other wave. The maximum legth for the paels is m. For paels over m i legth slotted or over-size holes must be pre-drilled to allow the thermal expasio ad cotractio of the paels to take place. The paels should be istalled with the protective film i place. VMZINC PLUS must be used o all o-vertical flashigs if ope gap soft boards are ot beig used. 0

33 VMZ composite Overview VMZ Composite material cosists of two layers of 0.mm thick pre-weathered zic ad a fire rated mm polyethylee core. The material is available i QUARTZ-ZINC, ANTHRA-ZINC ad the PIGMENTO colours. The stiffess of VMZ Composite allows very large ad exceptioally flat paels to be maufactured ad istalled. However the ature of composite material also allows it to be folded ito complex ad yet rigid shapes. Stadard paels ca be up to 00mm x 00mm i size, however it is possible to exted this to 00mm ad 00mm. It should be oted that 00mm wide paels are oly available i QUARTZ-ZINC. VMZ Composite is always istalled usig the raiscree pricipal with a veted air space of at least mm betwee the back of the paels ad the isulatio or solid structure. Paels ca be istalled both horizotally as well as vertically. The paels ca also be fixed with visible fasteers or usig a cassette system with hidde fixigs. VMZINC Composite ca also be fixed usig a structural bod (vertical paels oly) thus providig aother secret fix optio.

34 VMZ composite Structure Istallatio The system is lightweight as the paels weigh o more tha kg/m ad are geerally fixed to alumiium claddig rails with a thickess of at least mm. The zoe behid the paels must be veted ad at least mm deep. The paels are istalled o claddig rails. The exact dimesioig of the rails ad brackets will deped o loadigs ad pael orietatio. Vertical paels are geerally istalled usig a hook ad pi pricipal whereas horizotal paels rely o a cotiuous rail. Depedig o the system used, idividual paels may be idepedetly removable. Stadard pael istallatio is bottom up with the stadard joit width beig 0mm. The paels should be istalled with the protective film i place. 37 Mozaik Overview Mozaik is a raiscree cassette system that is available i all fiishes of mm thick VMZINC ad ca be istalled both vertically ad horizotally. The maximum pael size is 00mm x 00mm ad paels ca have a depth of 0, 0, 0 or 00mm. Vertical ad horizotal joits are mm. Timber battes ca be used to support the paels but metal rails are more commoly used (mm alumiium or.mm galvaised steel). Cetre to cetre spacig of the rails is typically 00mm but ca vary depedig o the loadig requiremets of the facade i questio.

42 Further techical iformatio Zic aesthetics Protective film VMZINC Membrae Fire protectio Zic is a material that requires almost o maiteace as the risig effect of raiwater performs this task aturally. However whe zic is used o a o rised surface such as a protected facade or soffit it is possible that the zic may exhibit some superficial stais. These stais will ot affect the itegrity of the zic itself. It is for this reaso that the very dark grey ANTHRA-ZINC should be carefully cosidered before beig desiged o a o rised facade or soffit. I marie locatios the risk of superficial staiig i these areas icreases. Whilst stais are possible o QUARTZ-ZINC ad the PIGMENTO rage the visual effect is greatly reduced ad therefore these fiishes may be more appropriate for some specific locatios. Zic ca be istalled adjacet to limestoe. The ru off from limestoe oto zic material is acceptable. However, limestoe dust ad gypsum dust geerated durig cuttig operatios ca react with zic i the presece of water ad form a superficial layer of white rust. No dust should be i cotact with uprotected zic. To prevet white rust, good costructio practices should be used to limit the amout of dust that comes i cotact with the zic. VMZINC maufacturig uses a colour maagemet system based o the Y-Factor. The Y-factor rages from 0 to 00: 0 is black ad 00 is white. The rage for ANTHRA-ZINC is to ad the rage for QUARTZ-ZINC is to. Variatios are possible withi this rage whe differet productio batches are used. All VMZINC facade systems are supplied with a protective film. We recommed that the film be left o the paels durig istallatio. The film should oly be removed whe other trades are o loger workig i the viciity of the completed zic facade. The film must ot be partially removed as this will lead to usightly stais. Paels adjacet to oe aother must ot be left with oe filmed ad the other ufilmed. The zic facade paels should be delivered to site with the film completely coverig pael faces but ot so as to obstruct film removal i joits. The protective film ca left o the paels for up to moths after pael istallatio. VMZINC Membrae is a breather layer that allows water vapour to pass through it but is water proof to liquid water (up to a colum of m). VMZINC Membrae should be used to protect the iteral leaf of the raiscree wall which is ofte the isulatio. Whilst zic has a fire performace ratig AA - BS : Part (`low vulerability` class i Scotlad) whe used o a veted wall it may be ecessary to address fire risks created by the veted cavity. This ca be dealt with by creatig flashigs that compartmetalise the veted cavity or by usig itumescet fire barriers that maitai the vetilated cavity i ormal coditios, leavig the mm cotiuous free air space, but, i the evet of fire, the itumescet vetilated fire barriers quickly expad to seal off the cavity to prevet fire spread. Not all fire retardat materials are compatible with zic, therefore please cotact us should you require project-specific iformatio.
