The existing courtyard will be enhanced with new concrete paving and plant material while maintaining existing seating areas and shade elements. 3 C PID The Hilb Library located in the center of the campus designed by John Carl Warnecke 2. The Fountain of Knowledge located in the forecourt to the Hilb Library dates back to the original campus design and represents the visual connection between the community and the campus 3. 8 C PID-08 Heating and cooling for the College of the Desert Fitness Center is provided by the campus high efficiency central chilled and hot water plant. The renovation of the Fitness Building includes all new HVAC systems with -pipe fan coil units and exposed ductwork. New mechanical systems are hung below the ceiling to integrate with the open interiors of the fitness rooms, while avoiding adding rooftop mechanical equipment and screens to the existing structure. The new Gymnasium Building includes a single air handling unit that directly conditions the gymnasium as a large singe zone, an approach that simplifies mechanical equipment and controls. Building air is transferred from the gymnasium through the lobby before returning to the air handling, providing indirect space conditioning of the lobby. Occupant comfort in the lobby is enhanced by four large circulating fans mounted from the ceiling. Conditioned air is also transferred from the gymnasium to the locker rooms and restrooms to serve as makeup air for the 100% exhaust systems in these spaces. The HVAC system, therefore, provides for direct space conditioning of the gymnasium while allowing return and relief air to indirectly condition and maintain building temperatures in the adjacent support spaces, while providing appropriate ventilation and exhaust rates for the building. The high efficiency envelope, insulated precast panels, HVAC systems, and lighting in the project allow both buildings to exceed California Energy Code (Title-2) standards by over 25% Shaded north-facing exterior space Large fans used to cool and circulate air Air transfer through wall openings Cold air supply Mechanical System

10 C PID-10 Flanking the east elevation of the new Gymnasium is a custom perforated facade that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also serves a practical function; providing privacy by reducing the ability to see in, while still allowing natural light into the space. At night, the back lit screen is warm and seems almost lantern-like. A much needed way-finding element, the signage glazing system directs students and visitors alike to the locker rooms, showers and restrooms. The Billboard
