1 Department of Development Aeronautics Building Inspection Economic Development Geographic Information Systems Planning & Zoning Building Maintenance The mission of the Geographic Information System (GIS) service program of the Department of Development is to leverage GIS data, output, analysis, data, and computing technology in such a manner to make the City's functions and operations more effective and more efficient. City Administrator/ Development Director City Planner/ Operations Manager GIS Analyst GIS Intern GIS - 1
2 MISSION: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a collection of computer software, hardware, spatiallyoriented data, and trained staff that allow for data creation and maintenance, display, analysis, and output. The GIS services group uses these capabilities to provide a variety of services to City departments, administration, and the general public. The scope of these services include the production of digital and hard copy map sets; providing internet applications to the general public; and analyzing data using geographic properties such as adjacency, proximity, and connectivity to produce information that can be used by the City s staff to make decisions and perform business functions. The above functions require the development and maintenance of a variety of GIS datasets related to land records, tax assessment, public utilities, transportation, land development, zoning, land use, public safety responses, and facility management. The City has utilized GIS technology to aid in local government operations since VALUE TASK FORCE: The VTF cited expanded use of web technology and facility management software to support the city s economic development goals and increase general maintenance efficiencies. GIS staff has researched, installed and trained on a new web-based programing environment. Development of user-specific web mapping tools have started, including a economic site development tool. Use of City Works facility management software is being expanded to the street and storm water facility operations. COMMUNITY VISION: In support of the city s economic development goals the GIS continued to provide frequent support and presentation materials in response to development inquiries or solicitations. The GIS is developing a web-based tool for site development outreach and promotion. GIS - 2
