The Ruhr Myth Industrial heart of Germany since the 1850ies The Kohlenpott (Coal pot) with more than 300 coal mines was the economic power house of Germany. Image: hard labour, bad living conditions Past 6
Hard Coal from the Ruhr: Nothing is for Eternity introduction growth stagnation decline Turnover Coal mining was the basis of Germany s economic miracle after World War II. Time but Mio/t Past Source: Statistik der Kohlenwirtschaft e.v Production of hard coal began to decline in the 1960ies. The lifecycle will end in
Hard Coal from the Ruhr: The region must go on Unemployed Ruhr area Miners Ruhr area Source: Bundesagentur für Arbeit, NRW; RVR-Datenbank-Statistik; Statistik der Kohlenwirtschaft e.v The miners workforce diminished in the course of the decline but The structural change in the Ruhr area constantly creates new opportunities for the citizens Population Ruhr area Working population Ruhr area Source: Landesbetrieb für Information und Technik, NRW; Statistisches Bundesamt Wiesbaden. 9 Sustainability and Post-Mining In 2007 the German government has passed a law on funding the termination of hard-coal mining. the RAG-Stiftung (RAGfoundation); RAG subsidized coal mining unit plus coal trade, land management, site development; Evonik Industries one of the world s leading specialty chemicals companies Past 9
The RAG-Foundation ensures that the RAG Corporation can discontinue subsidized coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of in 2019, the RAG-Foundation will finance RAG s perpetual mine management obligations related to coal mining. The foundation will finance these obligations through the sale of shares in Evonik Industries AG, through the income from its holdings, and through the income from its diversified financial assets. The RAG-Stiftung also aims to promote the Ruhr and Saar regions by supporting educational, scientific, and cultural measures related to coal mining. 10
Sustainability and Post- Mining: the RAG strategy environmental damages caused by coal production should be limited and handled carefully (environmental dimension), the costs of managing the postmining tasks should be managed efficiently (economic dimension), the population in the mining regions should be offered good future prospects to ensure their standard of living and their well-being after mining has come to an end (social dimension). Present 11
